My father is a marine biologist. When he was younger he was snorkeling at lovers cove (I think that’s the name) off of Catalina island. He and his friend saw a great white, that he said, was the size of a Volkswagen van. They hid behind rocks and then eventually circled up with their backs to each other. Maybe pregnant? I probably would’ve died from panic, honestly. Love you Hal! You manage to bring levity and straight facts that I appreciate.

check out the couple in hatteras nc that were attacked on their honeymoon. Killed the guy and nearly the girl but she survived. I surfed the day before at that pier. Never surfed hatteras again. A few years ago I was hit from below by a large shark and it seems like a territorial deal from what Hal has taught me. Likely a white shark. I was in Atlantic beach nc. Guy next to me saw it and freaked out. I wasn’t bitten just struck really hard, splashed water everywhere and I saw nothing due to the splashes. The fella beside me flailed crazily paddling in but I just stayed calm and figured I would be the calm one and wouldn’t get eaten vs that idiot splashing everywhere. He hit the beach and RAN all the way to his car and left. He never checked on me or even said a word.

@@MD-ev3hmthe deepest section of the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway runs through that section of North Carolina. Sharks use it as a migratory route. It's a great place to go fishing but a dangerous place to go swimming. I am glad that you survived your ordeal and am sorry that your friend abandoned you. He was probably in shock and instinctively got out of the water.

Hi Hal, yes I can confirm a few details for the Kai Cowley attack, very tragic, the Great White took his leg and he was only about 30 to 40 m from the beach in about chest deep water, another surfer managed to bring his body back to shore but sadly had passed by then. My youngest daughter knew him, we've surfed pondies a few times which is a good consistent wave around the headland from Ethel beach at Yorkes. Kai was a great upcoming surfer who loved it and I believe his whole family are surfers but have been supported by their local surf community. Also defo have bull sharks in the Bahamas but agree, most likely Tiger that took that poor lady.

Hey man. Don't know what the guy above me is trying to say, I just wanted to show sympathy. That has got to be one of the worst feelings. I don't have kids, but I imagine it is like family passing, but worse, as you watch it and they're sort of your responsibility to 18. (I'm not saying anyone is at fault, kids have to do things, it's just an unfortunate situation) So many lost. I was in the generation that was affected by ABB in Norway. The ter*or attack in 2011. I'm just glad me, like most others, weren't there, but the story is so sad, as he made a plan on how to get hours extra, especially as police literally had 1 or 0 helicopters. In the entire Norway 😂😢

Another great show Hal. 🦈🦈🦈🦈🦈 I saw something on those sharks washing up in Australia. It was 60 wobbegongs and a port Jackson shark. Wobbegongs don't have big home ranges, so that leaves them very vulnerable to something like that if that's what ended up happening. I saw that drone footage on Instagram. That pithing is wrong, cruel, and its murder. No shark deserves that! You're right when you say that culling doesn't help anything. All it does is damage the numbers of sharks in the environment and Is therefore ILLOGICAL!!!!! Sharks dont infest the ocean, they live there. If you ask me, sharks have more right to be in the ocean than humans do.

The courage required to swim towards a shark attack has to be immense if not damn near insurmountable.. 36 feet away is much different than 36 meters and a 6 footer is much different than a 13 footer and a spouse or child is much different than a stranger ..the calculus is too difficult for me to even speculate. I have no idea whatsoever how I would react.

Great show as usual Hal. Sometimes I like to look at the size of a shark in comparison to the person bitten. It really impacts me differently when I see exactly how massive a 12 foot shark is, in comparison to the victim, as sometimes it's hard to get my head around it. Shuddering!

Not a scientist, but a 30 year reef hobbyist here. I very highly doubt that salinity played any part in the mass fish death. Marine fish can handle a gradual decline in specific gravity (salt) to rather low levels. For that matter, marine fish are treated for parasites by submerging them in fresh water for up to a couple minutes. Even if a massive amount of fresh water were to be dumped into a spot in the ocean, it would dissipate before it would cause any issue at all. Maybe the local authorities (water, sewage, ) did something dumb and are blaming it on salt.

I think we've 6 attacks in South Australia in 2023. Three were fatal two were taken with no remains found. The three fatalities were all surfers I think. From below surfers don't look like seals. These sharks know what they are. There's something on top of that thing that they can eat that's why they're getting knocked off their boards

You said in the first story, in Nassau Bahamas, that you didn't think Bull Sharks were in the Bahamas. But when I hear of Bull Shark attacks, other than in the Bahamas, I'm surprised. I was diving in the waters near Freeport, and had them swimming around me. I had never seen one before, nor dove in the Bahamas. Ive done 200 dives, all over the Caribbean. The shark, looked to me, like a statue. They are eating machines, so to speak. And I've been to Nassau a few times, and knew of all the sharks in those islands. Tourist let their guards down.

I think the recent shark attacks that hit me the hardest -The young mum who was attacked lifting her child onto a floating playground in Mexico (Grrr... Who would build a floating playground that is accessible to sharks)? -The high school grad who jumped off the pirate ship in the Bahamas. That one is very controversial, I know. But I strongly believe it was a shark predation. If not, then a mermaid must of pulled him under and taken him to Atlantis. -The teenage Aussie surfer. And, -The young Russian in Egypt. I had nightmares after seeing the video of his attack. I think attacks on younger people are so much worse to stomach.😢. I guess because I am a mother, and these people are the same ages as my kids.

That Cameron Robbins footage was terrifying. There were at least 2 sharks who attacked him if not 3, then the officials and shark apologists pretended that it wasn’t caught in camera and that the witnesses weren’t screaming, “Shark! Something’s chomping on his sh1t! Bye Bye!” It’s even worse because people denied he was eaten.😢

Thank you again Hal for your time and excellent work on getting facts. Much appreciated. 🦈 🦈 🦈 Sharks 🦈 Happen is the best way to get th news.

Hey Hal, I like the shirt. We just sent the Dolphins packing outta frigid KC without a win, so your show is a perfect ending to a great night. The info about pithing was really interesting and had to watch a video demonstrating it - pretty graphic.

Hey Hal, do you know the average water temperature for Florida vs the Bahamas? I know they claim the water is too warm for GW’s to be in the Bahamas, but they are proven to be off Florida. Saw a video a couple years ago of some fishermen who caught a juvenile GW off the beach and were able to safely release it. Just wondering if it’s that big of a difference to justify the claim. I’ve also never understood why some people will paddle board a mile from shore! IMHO you’re asking for a shark to at least check you out!

Sharks keep happening! I would like to Warn Florida people who like swimming with Manatees. A friend in Homosassa told me that bull sharks have been cruising up the Crystal River. Please be careful. A friend of mine was bitten by a small bull shark swimming with Manatees in the Indian River back in 2015.

Real conservation would be keeping people out of the water in dangerous shark habitats. Real conservation would be an international moratorium on commercial fishing for a few years, to let the fish stocks recover. Real conservation would be ending the use of pesticides and artificial fertilizers that wash into the oceans and kill marine life. When I hear about people killing hundreds of sharks just to keep swimming tourists a little more complacent, it makes me so angry that I feel almost as though humans deserve to get eaten... almost. Does anyone else out there feel sick of humans always being the problem?

Your comment is spot on. Humans are supposedly the most intelligent animals on the planet...Humans are the only animal actively destroying the planet and themselves in the process. Personally, I have more compassion for the "less intelligent" animals. Take care.

Sulfonamides were invented in the 1930's, so yeah, before that an infection would be super serious. If you are allergic to sulfa(like me), you'd be in a lot of trouble until penicillin in the '50's. Living pre-antibiotics would have sucked very badly.
@Pensacolavixen
@Pensacolavixen 7 ай бұрын
Fleming invented penicillin in 1928 and it was readily available in the 1940s. Sulfa drugs were limited to certain pathogens, many bacterium were resistant. Before Sulfa and Penicillin- The Limb containing the bite would be amputated to try to prevent the spread of infection. Many people would die of shock from the amputation, or extreme fevers from the local infection. If they were strong enough to overcome a general infection, they still faced full sepsis (blood poisoning) and septic shock or gangrene. A good example of a shark bite becoming gangrenous was in the movie called "the Beach". Thank goodness that Penicillin was available for WWII, imagine the fatality rate without it.
