It’s normal in this industry. A lot of money is spent on marketing and labor. Without high margins, they’d go bust in a matter of weeks. She probably hit a plateau with her organic reach and being on Oprah so now she’ll need a good percentage of her sales for marketing. In a nut shell, the customer acquisition cost is very high in this sector

But what is unique about the product other than the identity politics aspect? I rarely use skin care products, but I do know that shea butter is a very common ingredient. It doesn't say much about the product if it relies on it being a black owned business to be successful, and not the merits of the product.

It's not that white people can't use it. It's just that people in many countries in Africa have been using it for a very long time and it sounds like she may source higher quality shea from somewhere in Africa. It's like buying high-quality spices like saffron in a Persian neighbourhood or what have you. Because it's their culture's specialty, they are able to better discern the good stuff from the bad. I've bought crappy shea cuz I don't know which brands are good and trust me, you DON'T want to use it.
