What I really liked was not only did you explain phrases, but you also briefly spoke about body language like not to tap someone - I feel like things like that are very important when experiencing different cultures! So thanks for that, it was a very nice touch! :)

The worst thing about speaking Japanese to a Japanese person is that they assume you speak the language and they start talking to you in Japanese. Which makes the situation awkward... for example, if you ask someone for directions in Japanese... they'll give you directions in Japanese and unless you're going to be able to understand them... you'll just end up telling them that you don't understand and ask if they can speak English or you'll pretend to understand and will have to continue being lost/ask another person. Just my experience.

Especially in Kyoto T.T I am Japanese myself but wasn't born in Japan is even worried to talk to them xD
@auliaherdina7 жыл бұрын
maybe you could say 「日本語はあまりわかりませんから。。。」which means "I don't understand Japanese very well...." after you say this, usually they will understand.

boyfriend and I got lost in a train station when we were in Japan last March. a nice older man came over to us, looked at us and asked: "doitse desu ka?" and I said: "Hai" and he started talking in very good German to us and helped us find the right exit. and the second Situation was at a figure Store in Akihabara. we entered the Store, one of the Staff looked at us and started speaking German aswell....hmmmmmm......how comes? do I look so German?? XD i felt so welcome and smiled to myself all day long.

I have made use of a few of these phrases, and they are quite useful. I feel that one of the most important things you have pointed out was something that pretty well saved me from needing to make a huge trip 2 times, which was asking police officers things, I had to make it somewhere in a limited amount of time, and was severely lost so I remembered someone talking about it in the past, so that's exactly what I did, and with virtually no words he directed me perfectly to where I was needing to get to (just in time by no fault of his).
Shar, I totally need to take Japanese lessons from you! UGH! Huge fan of your channel and your travels.

Hi Sharla! I only found your channels a couple months ago while I was trying to decide whether to travel to Japan (from Australia) later this year. They have been entertaining and helpful so thanks heaps :) A couple weeks ago we made a decision and booked our trip to Japan so this video was perfectly timed! I always want to try to use some local language when I travel but often get nervous about mucking it up so this was super helpful! Thank you!

The poll was a cool addition :) I studied Japanese for 13 years but haven't for the past 5 so this was a nice refresher and I actually had never learnt "I lost ____." That would be so helpful if I was in that situation while visiting Japan, I would panic so bad, especially if I couldn't explain in Japanese!

Hi Sharla. I just got back home from Japan. It rained everyday except for one day. And when we left on Sunday the weather report forecasted a typhoon for Monday. However we had a great spectacular time. Japan is immaculate. Not one paper on the street. Tokyo at nite was beautiful and Kyoto was magnificent. Your videos were very helpful. We used Sumimasen every time we went to the Restaurants and stores. And of course kudasai and arigatou gozaimas each and every time. T-shat arimaska or Ringo arimaska was very helpful. You guys,are great. Thx again for your wonderful videos. I loved visiting the Bamboo forest, tea gardens, temples, and shrines. And above seeing the biggest wooden Buddha in the world.

Ohhh, I was searching for this on your channel three weeks ago when I came to Tokyo for the first time in my life XD but well if I ever can afford to go again I will rewatch this! I'm glad I was polite and used arigatou gozaimasu and sumimasen right. thanks for making this video, it will be really good for others because I had a lot of trouble talking English to others. For example how to ask if you can take a photo of someone, or how to ask a person to make you and your friends a group photo, :) Just tourists things, but I've heard that a lot of people in Japan (especially young girls) feel very uncomfortable about being photographed, but they won't say that you shouldn't do it because they are too shy. My daughter and I recently travelled from Canada for our 1st trip to Japan and although we only knew basic words and a few phrases we had zero problem communicating. Everyone we encountered was very helpful and if they couldn't help they found someone who did. The only time I ever felt uncomfortable was in the smoking area or the place we stayed at. Every time i went out the conversation would completely stop and shorty after all the people (usually just young men) would leave. Not sure if it was because i was a foreigner or female but it was disheartening as in Canada smoking areas tend to be the best spots to make conversation easily with strangers.
