The PM and the rest of those in government are just mouthpieces. They are told what to say and do. This woman needs to fight from outside the political arena. Trade Unions and union leaders are part of the problem, they are too close to the Labour Party and they supported Starmer for the general election. Union bosses are also, in their own way, part of the establishment - their job is to divert and pacify the discontent of workers and negotiate social peace with the bosses. They earn large amounts of money - £100K + generous benefits (paid for by members). Their income puts them in another class. They eat different food to the workers, live in better houses, attend Ascot and royal garden parties, their wives are introduced to titled women, and generally they live in a different world. Any sympathy they had for the workers dies. Their hopes are not really for an equal society, but for higher salaries. We need to organise and fight back outside the confines of trade unions - we need real militant, autonomous, grass roots organising, collective direct action and revolt and people need to completely reject this system and genuinely resist it.

It was her speech that dramatically helped defeat the government over the winter fuel payment. She is the only public figure that really fought for the pensioners. I know others fought against the callous motion as well, but she really did fight for us. After saying that I'm a doubting Thomas if the callous new Labour government will do a u-turn.

What this lady forgets is that WW2 bankrupt Britain and Britain only survived because of the British Empire. Being able to borrow billions from India, Canada etc make a form of recovery possible. Due to this borrowing etc, the value of the £ collapsed within a decade and the country has never really recovered from it. Labour back in 1945 put the country back on the road to recovery, but the price paid was costly.

My partners son was in the unite union for 15 years and they did absolutely nothing for him, he had to pay towards his own footwear and when he was suffering with his mental health had no support from anyone in his union whatsoever. He has now left his job and started elsewhere and I think he’d be wasting his money joining the union again. He is on the autistic spectrum and having once been a member of NUPE I thought that his union would have his back like my union did so emphatically back in the day, sadly in my humble opinion this union is impotent if his experience of being a member is anything to go by. I tried talking to them myself but they wouldn’t let me talk on his behalf and insisted that he would have to give his permission for this to happen, unfortunately because of his autism he doesn’t want anything to upset his routine and tried his best to carry on regardless until he reached breaking point and had to leave following time off with mental health problems. While I agree with this lady and what she is saying, she should maybe concentrate on getting her own house in order with the same amount of passion she showed here.
