so glad this is still online; I used it years ago and found it so helpful.

The best of the best demonstrations on You tube are by Sharon Shamber! I started quilt lessons last year then found Sharon on You Tube and learned more from her videos than the quilt lessons that I paid for inUk. I'm going to join her virtual classes because they work out (in the long run) much cheaper than what I would pay here. I have used her Binding the Angel video for every quilt I have made since discovering her on you Tube. Have a look at her own site its great! Thanks Sharron

Thank you for this great tutorial. So detailed, but clear and easy to understand. I love the quilting process-- all but putting the sandwich together, which has always been a pain. You have given me a technique that is easy and effective, and I'm so very grateful.

This is absolutely wonderful! Having RA and Osteo arthritis plus Fibro, this way of basting means no more kneeling on the floor and bending over for long periods of time. This is great! I will definitely be using this technique on my next quilting project. Thanks Sharon!!

I bought boards at the hardware store and am now going to baste my quilt today. I have used the basting method shown but never with the boards. I can't wait to try this way and be assured my quilt is completely square. I will hand quilt it and hopefully have it done in time for a local quilt show! This is a great tutorial for basting quilts!

As a novice quilter I have had real trouble getting my quilts basted. They look fine on the top until I turn them over and see the wrinkles. I have tried tape and pins and also hand-basted in a grid from the centre. I will definitely be trying this technique - thank you so much for sharing.

sweet! thanks for posting this. I will be sure to use this method when I'm machine quilting. Don't need it for my hand frame, although it might work for those who don't have extra bar for batting.

The basting stitch is used on jacket collars and lapels to hold the interfacing in place.. Love this way of joining my 3 layers together. I like a mixture of pins and basting. Thank you for the videos, brilliant!

I just found this video and I am going to get 2 long boards and start basting my quilt this week! I don't have the room (unless I remove the furniture) to put a large quilt on the floor for basting. Also I have 2 cats and a dog, all whom love to lay on my quilts, so it isn't easy to get a large quilt put together , plus my knees can't take crawling around on the floor anymore! Thank You for the tutorial,

EXCELLENT! I am not a quilter...yet...but I want to be so I'm trying to learn as much as I possibly can before I step into the financial commitment. My goal is to learn to FMQ (using rulers) andI considered using spray adhesive to create my sandwich, but I can see where this method (while taking a bit more time), is much more up my alley...I love the idea of thread basting and the technique very much appeals to me.

thanks for these great demonstrations in parts one and two. I love that you showed how to tie a quilter's knot; I have been quilting for a long time and had never learned that until today. Then the historic sewing technique of the haring bone stitch and what's great about it for all these centuries was a thrill to hear about. That story alone makes me want to give it a try so thanks for telling that little tidbit. Only thing I wonder about is what the back looks like on your finished basting demonstration?

Thanks for the excellent tutorial. So generous of you to share. Question: Have you ever done the basting stitches horizonatally (following the length of the boards) instead? I want to machine quilt a strip quilt following the seams that run horizontally across the quilt, and it seems that removing the basting stitches would make more sense doing it the other direction, but I bow to your expertise.

gosh, I started quilting about 2 years ago. I'm learning through the older ladies at church when we meet once a month for sewing club. I've never basted a quilt...only used the safety pins! I've seen some of this by the ladies but never paid attention. Mostly I work on quilt tops as I learn different patterns and then a few of the ladies do nothing but pin and tie the quilts.

When you machine quilt, what do you do with the basting thread? You cannot quilt over it and you do not want to undo too much or you'll lose the tension.
@prairiepalmetto93785 жыл бұрын
Virginia Halgren You would pin baste a quilt you intend to machine quilt. Thread basting is for quilts that are hand quilted.
@lexitejeda62095 жыл бұрын
You cut away the basting thread that is in the way of the machine as you go. This is what I do when machine quilting one I have hand-basted.

I’m having a hard time finding DMC tatting thread. I found a ball of white size 80 on EBay. Is that what you use? Lizbeth brand is much more common. Is it comparable to DMC? Can I use a color other than white and not worry about bleeding? Any advice would be much appreciated.

Wonderful video and unique way to baste. I am more than intrigued. I have been big fan of the safety pin method for years but may change that some day after seeing this. I just have question for you. With all that long thread on the top, does it get in the way with machine quilting? Does your needle or thread ever get caught? Thanks, Chris

When you do a queen or king quilt, do you slide the whole thing to left and right to baste all of it when you are using a smaller table. I have a cutting table, but is not that wide. This looks very interesting. I have been having a hard time on the floor pinning.

I'm nrw to this thread basting technique. Another quilter suggested this would be great to use on a King quilt to make sure my baking was stable when I quilt it myself. Would you also use the Herringbone thread basting technique on a King quilt. I've aready pin basted it...however I'm concerned the backing may shift. Any advice would be mu h appreciated please. Thank you from Canadian quilter.

What an awesome video, lot better than the guy using his fence and glue to piece the front back and the top together. How long are the boards and do they need to be painted first. My husband is a carpenter I am sure this will keep my area flat. Do you show how to machine quilt on like an old singer sewing machine? Or do you do all your work by hand?

This is the only method I use now. I got puckers with the safety pins, and forget the glue basting. I make a lot of baby quilts and don't want those chemicals on my fabric. This method is the best. I won't consider any other.

Like it shows in the video you cut and remove the thread when you are coming up to it with your quilting. Do not remove any more then you need to.

I quilt on my embroidery machine and have a large magnetic hoop called a Mighty Hoop. The strong magnets hold the quilt sandwich very securely. It will even hold a thick jacket back. Just don't pinch your fingers in it. Ouch! lol

Hello Ms. Shambers, did you tell your son Quinn that he was an alien when he was a kid? He is on KZbin also and says he was kind of messed up as a kid because of this, so he was just telling us what that did to him and I am just curious. He says you are like the Picasso of the quilt world. Congratulations, they are awesome.
