For the final episode of Test Drive in 2016, we wrap up our series of epoxi construction reviews with a model that Garrett is very familiar and fond of...the Sharp Eye "Disco". The Sharp Eye Disco model is one of Garrett's all time favorite small wave performance boards.
Watch Garrett put the Disco model to the test in drifty, bumpy conditions. The E2 construction proves to be a great option for Sunrise Surf Shop's best selling surfboard!

I tried the disco tech in the E2 epoxy and have to agree with you that the board felt good under the feet- not "chattery" and "corky" like some of the other epoxy boards I have ridden in the past. Although I only rode the board for about 30 minutes it performed really well and generated a lot of speed out of the turns. Thanks for the reviews Garrett!

that's good to hear! glad you liked it as well, all these epoxies are constructed very similar but some definitely feel a little different and the E2 is one of my favorites so far. Thanks for watching!! hopefully we have some solid swell coming soon

Hi Garret , what are the dims of the surfboard? I think that´s maybe could be a good idea if you put the dims on the video description. Thanks for the review!! are the best

Sorry about that, we always film the dimensions but sometimes they get edited out on the final cut. We will be making sure to have those labeled on all future reviews this year along with a few other new things to make it even better. Thank you so much for your feedback, we really appreciate you watching! I'm 5'10, 160 lbs and this Disco was a 5'8 x 19.25 x 2.38. I believe it is 27.5 litres. Hope that helps!

Hey was just curious if you have done any reviews on the disco cheater or simply what you think about it, if you have ridden one, in terms of how it holds in 4-5 foot waves?

I noticed you prefer large fins, when according to the fin guide weight recommendations, you should be using medium fins. Do you notice a big difference between medium and large fins with your weight @ 160 lbs?
@sunrisesurfshopfl

It all depends on the board. I personally prefer larger fins in general, have no issue turning them and like the drive they provide over mediums. With a board like the Disco though, deep single concave through the fins, a large fin works best no matter what size you are. We have team kids riding 5'2 and 5'4 Disco's, maybe 120lbs soaking wet, and they are using a large performer or PC-7 fin because the board design itself lends it to be very loose and skatey so a large fin complements that well. Now that is not set in stone, i can think of 1 maybe 2 people that prefer a medium fin in their Disco but its rare, 9 out of 10 people who have disco's use a large fin in them

That is interesting to hear. I was under the impression that when you surf small waves, then you use fins that will generate speed, ie, futures blackstix, and for bigger waves, you would want to use fins that control speed, ie, futures JJF. I have a sharp eye disco and ride future fins. When it is knee-waist high, I use medium EA Blackstix 3.0, and when it is waist-chest high, I use medium JJF fins. I am curious now to try out some large JJF fins. I am 5'6 and weigh 150-155, and just got a 5'8 Sharp Eye SB-1 round tail board, volume @ 25L, for waves above chest high. Which future fins have you had good experience with on the SB-1?

SB-1 is a perfect example of a board i would use a medium sized template in and i should be clear i don't ride a wide range of Large fins, in general the main template i use (and the best selling template for us as long as we have been selling fins separately) is the large AM fins. This fin has a unique blend of drive and release that makes it easily one of the best templates of all time. I do like the JJF Large as well as the medium, both of those fins work incredibly well. And once again, i have no problem with resistance of large fins, i can make them work, its not the same for everybody depending on their style and what they like but i highly recommend you try those large JJ's in your Disco. For the SB-1 the medium JJ's should be great or try the Medium AM template, great fin as well.

This is an older review but I was wondering if you ride the Disco in the really small summer wind swell like we have on the east coast? I have a baby buggy for better days would you consider the disco a smaller wave grovel board for east coast? Good to find an east coast reviewer with video! Good work.

Thanks Tony! Appreciate you watching, i always say the baby buggy and disco are somewhat similar but i consider the buggy a bit more performance oriented. I can ride my Disco in knee high slop and it still goes great, just make sure you get one with full dimensions. Marcio mixes up the dims on Disco's sometimes because some people like them narrower to work in a little more wide variety of waves. The full dimension Discos work amazing as a small wave groveler because they still turn better then fuller nose, fishy shapes. Hope that helps! cheers

Sunrise Surf Shop this board def looks insane .. I wasn't that crazy about the baby buggy carbon wrap. Stoked to hear how your Pyzel reviews comes out .. the stubby bastard is my favorite.. the sure thing is def a sick small wave board.

Do you always go 1 inch shorter from your pu when you go to the same model epoxy even if it's 1 1/2 - 2 liters less then your pu ?
@sunrisesurfshopfl
@sunrisesurfshopfl 7 жыл бұрын
Yes, i have done that throughout all the epoxy reviews we did (Flex Bar, Epoxi Core, Carbon Wrap and E2) that was the reason i wanted to review the same models that i have ridden in PU, so i could put that theory to the test. you would think float is float, volume is volume, but for me the epoxy material allows me to go a little smaller for some reason?
@PineappleSmack

Sunrise Surf Shop thanks for the reply .. I took your advice with going down one size with a epoxy from a board you normally ride , a 6'0 poly stubby bastard 33L was my fav board and I ordered a 5'11 electralite that came out to 31L I was a little nervous thinking I went down to much being 190lbs but the board felt really really good

Awesome! That is really, really good to hear, i was skeptical about doing that as well but it has worked out good for me so it's good to know it worked out for someone else also. Thanks for feedback and letting me know!

I keep watching this video tho you got me really curious about this board .. I checked there site , the board must be pretty foiled cause the stock dims are pretty close to what I ride in a 6'0 and 5'11 but the volume was way lower Like I have a poly stubby bastard 6'0 20 2 5/8 33L a electralite stubby bastard 5'11 19 7/8 2 9/16 31.3L a poly sure thing 5'11 19 7/8 2 5/8 33.8L and a carbon wrap baby buggy 6'0 20 2 9/16 33.6L

It is for sure. The Disco in general is one of the most high performance small wave boards that exists in my opinion. The other good thing is that the model does allow for a lot of personal discretion on dimensions being tweaked but in general yes, it is quite foiled so the nose and tail are much thinner then the rail in the center of the board. It really is one of the most user friendly, rippable boards for small to a little bit overhead. If you want to try one in the future and you don't have a Sharp Eye dealer close by we do drop ship and can throw in some accessories (pad or leash) no charge to offset shipping a little. Of course I would need some more info like a pic of you, your weight, etc etc... My advice based off your dim's you provided would be to order one custom and tweak the dims to raise the volume a bit. We do it all the time, will send you a link to new Test Drive e-mail for this stuff. Thanks again for following vids Jeff!!
