I like how in the book it explains that it has been raining just before this and Sharpe thinks this will have given the pistol wet powder so is happy to slowly stroll up to rosendale and take his pistol away. It's only after sharpe is holding it he realizes that it is a more expensive variety that had a protective cap keeping the powder dry. "If I had known that I would never have advanced on him so slowly" he thinks to himself.

In the book Rossendale suffered far more than any of the actual bad guys like Duco or Hakeswill. Poor guy had his eyes slashed out with a sabre and was stabbed in the back by a lance. The French cav then searched him for loot as he lay dying and hit him when he struggled. He then lay dying for the rest of the battle before finally being stabbed by a woman when he struggled as she took his trousers off for its silver buttons.

ales seses ... Please do yourself a real favour and buy the Audio Book series of Sharpe novels consisting of 21 books. The first book in the series, ‘Sharpes Tiger’ is set in India. If you’ve become a Sharpe enthusiast I guarantee you’ll be hooked. Bernard Cornwalls skills as a historical researcher & writer are simply outstanding. The narrator of 20 of the 21 books in the series is Rupert Farley. You’d swear it was Sean Bean himself. The second in the series, ‘Sharpes Triumph’ narrated by Paul McGann still carries a powerful story although Rupert Farley in my opinion is far better suited to peoples ‘mindset’ of Sean Beans Sharpe. I was hooked on the TV series when it was first broadcast and finally got round to buying audio books a couples of years ago. I purposely stopped watching the DVD episodes as they could not compete with the depth and scale of detail captured in the books, as you’d expect when compared to even an extremely good made for TV adaptation. I hope you take the plunge and try ‘Sharpes Tiger’ because Rupert Farley does an excellent Sargent Obedier Hakeswell (Pete Postlethwaite). Happy listening.

Sharpe breaking Rossendale’s sword here is symbolic, in many armies at the time, officers who were stripped of theor rank by court martial were cashiered, by which they would be publicly stripped of epaulettes, decorations and other insignia, and their sword, would be broken. The sword was the symbol of an officers, British officers being court-martialled had to place their swords lengthwise on the panel bench, if found guilty, the point of the sword would be pointed at them, if found not guilty, the handle would be pointed at them, and the sword returned.

Random Extra as well, there are certain knighthoods and orders where if you break the rules and codes you are stripped of title and are meant to literally have a sword broken over your head, as in they hit the flat of a sword on the top of your head to break it. also the process of stripping a rank from any officer or knight was often a ceremony that was prepared for. the day before the tailor would remove most stitches from rank and insignias while the sword would be filed part-way through so when the 'formal' event would occur in front of attending onlookers it would be done quickly and easily rather than taking time to tug them free or even somewhat ironically have the man breaking the sword be injured by cutting themselves or fragments of blade flying around after forcefully snapping it

Sharpe's Waterloo is a great episode, but there was a missed opportunity. One of the best scenes in the book is when Sharpe appears at Lady Richmond's Ball, covered in blood, and walks up to Wellington as all the guests are sitting for dinner to gasps and stunned silence from all those assembled, including Jane, Rossendale and Lucille, and reports Napoleon's advance from Quatre Bras. Honestly, if you put some more of the uncensored violence type of stuff and properly gritted the scene, the guy coming back for the lance and hacking away would have that Apoclypse Now type of feel for a completely different type of war. I mean how many times has this guy braved to go past a lance point that it has become routine to not only kill, in such a dangerous manner, but cheat death? The reaction of the lead man is even one of, "that's good but a bit weird you are so nonchalant, if not excited, about the whole ordeal." I think about that scene with Harper, killing Wormwood and how he stands in the door way, an almost exact way you would see with a drama like Gangs of New York. The show really does have a true level of war horror that is involved in it, just not as harrowing as the revenge fragging scene in Platoon but Sharpe has that fragging scene and it has it's own drama to it that comes very close.

@@incognito9292 the theft takes place before, after the fall of France and Neopolian being shipped off to Corsica(?) Sharpe fights a duel with some Officer and she deserts him and steels his money. Once peace happens he's sent to the North of England where he runs into her and Rossendale, where he demands his money back. You have to remember that up until relatively recent times all a wife had belonged to the husband.

The breaking of ones sword, its one thing for it to break in battle, but for it to be broken on purpose it's a massive dishonor, sharp doing it, he is literally saying not just he isn't a man, but he has no honor.

I thought that at first, but I think Rossendale just has a similar one to Sharpe's, and he does lean towards him before drawing it. Bit unclear though, they could have shot that better or given Rossendale something more fancy and poncy.
