@ "Poor men dying to make rich men richer? Now that's capitalism." No it isn't socialist. wrong framing! The correct framing is... "Poor AND Rich men dying to make their Country Richer? Now that's Mercantilism" Capitalism is were people produce goods and services for profit to which they then "FREELY" Trade with each other... and by "FREELY" Trade I mean... to trade without tariffs and subsidies on traded goods. The British Empire was by definition Mercantile... not Capitalist. It wasn't until the repeal of the corn laws in 1846 that Britain went form being a mercantile Country... to a Capitalist Country. The British Empire was by definition still Mercantile, yet The Mother Country was not anymore. Britain hasn't been Capitalist since the Great War, with a brief shift back to being mercantile between the two wars, and then after the war Britain moved to a very very mixed economy consisting of Mercantilism, Capitalism, Corporatism and Socialism, which is still the case to day in Britain, although in a much more moderate way than it was in the post war era. www.worldatlas.com/articles/what-is-mercantilism.html

Love n respects to UK Royal Army from Sam India... we fought together in WW1 against Kaiser. During WW2 n fought n defeated a formidable German Japanese n Italian enemy. Sharpe is my favorite tv show on Napoleonic Wars 1812. Sharpes Rifles n Waterloo are my favorite episodes. Shaun Bean lives the roll of Major Richard Sharpe n his acting is exemplary. Majore Sharpe is a disciplined tough patriotic no nonsense warrior n a lover who fights the French aggressors. Not seen this one am watching right now...

@Apollo890
@Apollo890 3 жыл бұрын
He was only politically opposed to Wellington he had nothing to do with the Peninsular campaign. He was interested in leading the British campaign but when the command was given to Wellington Tarleton flatly refused to serve under him. And as Sharpe wants nothing to do with politics it wouldn't have made sense to Bring him in. He is mentioned in the books, there is a scene where Wellington grips about the things Tarleton is saying about him in parliament during one of the campaign's setbacks.

Same reason anyone does. If Cain can kill Able, his own brother, after the Lord tried to talk him out of it, then it is easy for a man to kill his own country men. It’s easier for imperial forces to do so as well because of the less intimate relationship then might hold. As an American I have read of many defectors who got greedy.

Sarnt Sharpe not only makes the only show of spirited defense out of the whole garrison (with 3 kills) but when shot in the head merely cops a scalp graze. The raiders then neglect to check whether he is really dead whilst leisurely finishing off all his wounded comrades, thus enabling him to be the sole survivor of a near-total massacre. There were two special movies made about Sharpe in India which were filmed after the series. They were Sean Beans last pictures as Sharpe and they were never part of the series.

About 15 years ago they did 2 new Sharpe stories. It was easy to miss them - I did. They were both set in India. Cornwell wrote about Sharpe's earlier (Indian) career last, so the plot was moved onwards to the 1820's and the books were condensed. Cornwell's books of course are closely based on historical events while the 2 tv episodes are generic 'imperialism in India' stories. As it is India they were able to employ a decent number off extras for once, but the quality still lies in the acting rather than the budget. This episode is mainly notable for employing Padma Lakshi, Salman Rushdie's former squeeze, as the incredibly sexy queen of a small Indian state (she governs through her son). She really had fine genes - she looks amazing, although she must have been nearly 40 when the show was made. Anyway I really recommend the books (this scene and the villain here is directly taken from the second of those books) which introduces you to a fascinating historical conflict which most Brits know nothing about.

I haven't watched the show, just clips on YT... But to those questioning the aged appearance, it might be because of this scene was made in flashback but Sharpe character is actually in his current POV You know, when you're recalling your childhood memories you don't turn child In that case, I wish Sharpe recall his childhood scene to be made... Must be awesome

Dodds (the one on the horse with the face of a rather smug horse) was a deserter, his troops (if I remember right) were soldiers of a native ruler dressed up as Indian recruits to the British Army. Dodds was the lover of the local (female) ruler.

This is from Sharpe's Challenge which came out in 2006. It's based on the book Sharpe's Tiger, Sharpe's Triumph and Sharpe's Fortress, which are set before the previous run. They included this flashback in the story and then moved up/adapted the rest of the books to be set after Waterloo.
