yeah, the show is great! Stuff like this isn't getting made anymore coz the movie industry has been infected with woke progressive politics. There are some plot holes though, like the kid of Sharpe that past half of the series is only mentioned once again and then totally forgotten about; probably coz romance isn't so romantic if the MC has a kid XD and the low budget really stands out in the fighting scenes that are more akin to the Zorro series I watched in the 90's but was made in the 80's. Most of the dialogue is good, most of the languages nailed... though the Swedish actor playing the Dutch 'sergeant' to give the order in Dutch to present their arms and shoot is ridiculous. I had to have subtitles to understand what he was saying and I am Dutch, but kudos for the actor for trying; Dutch is a pretty difficult language to learn for foreigners XD

Majors Lennox and Hogan were drawn from historical accuracy. Engineers had a very slow promotion track, and richer people and nobility were promoted despite a character like Lennox deserving promotions but losing out because he could not buy higher rank. Even Sharp was stuck as a major until 'Silly Billy' made him a Colonel in the Dutch army. There's a common theme throughout the Sharp series about how talented soldiering could only take someone so far. Even Wellington had to do this dance. He eventually became Prime-minister!
@SantomPh2 жыл бұрын
@@68jroche a Major cannot buy a colonel's commission without establishing his own regiment (very expensive). It was intentionally difficult to become a colonel without new troops to command, otherwise the British Army would be full of captains and not enough majors or captains. Sharpe and Lennox were promoted on merit each time, Lennox in India and Sharpe in Portugal/Spain.
@michalsoukup1021 Жыл бұрын
You did not need to raise a regiment, you could buy your colonel's commision when they retired. Sometimes the officers of the regiment pooled together to make that purchase because it meant promotions for everyone.

Sir Henry Simmerson did have something of a tiny redemption in 'Sharpe's Peril'. He called Sharpe 'Richard' and they shook hands at the end. Closure of a sort.
@talavera95153 жыл бұрын
The look on Sharpe's face when Simmerson offers to shake his hand there is the most wary, suspicious and distrustful look I have ever seen in my entire life. If Simmerson's hand were writhing with snakes he couldn't have looked at it with more distrust. I like to think of Sean Bean practising that expression for years, saving it for the day Sharpe was senior enough to use it.

@@Southern_Crusader I agree, he's very special, and he doesn't get enough credit. So many people seem to think that he's really like Sharpe or Boromir, so they don't think he's even acting, whereas so far as I can tell, it's his character in the recent _Time_ (BBC) that's much closer to his real personality, and people are saying he should get a BAFTA for that.

@@jr5925 I wouldn't know about critical recognition as I only discovered Sean's work at the end of last year, when I decided it was way past time to watch _Sharpe_ . I'm going by the number of comments I've seen on twitter about _Time_ to the effect "I never rated him as an actor but he was really good in this". Even the DIRECTOR didn't believe until after they'd shot the first scene that Sean was going to be capable of playing Mark Cobden convincingly, which if you think about it is pretty insulting. That kind of thing is what I mean by "he doesn't get enough credit".
