I rather like seeing Sharpe playing the common soldier for a bit. It's a nice change of pace. And they talk so much about how he was raised from the ranks, so it's a good chance to see what he's like back down in the ranks.

You should read up on how they recruited men for the Royal Navy and the press gangs they had going into villages and "recruiting" people.

Their is an interesting book called the recruiting seargeant set in the seventeenth century. No matter what the era is, recruiters always appear to offer the children of the poor, and the working class, a chance for adventure, travel, and a pension. What they do not show you is what can happen to u in mind, spirit, and body. Really not good to show a soldier with his leg off, his face burnt to hell, and still fighting for his pension, as many vets do now.. Once the war is over, u are forgotten

you are essentially 1/2 correct. Shakoes were indeed meant to make the soldier look good (i.e tall). but the british model (a belgic shako) was not impractical. sukneh's comment completes it from here.

during this time in history i can only imagine that you would have to be pretty desperate to want to join up as a private soldier in the british army, ok it`s regular employment, you get a nice uniform, and hopefully you also get paid as well, whats not to love, but then again saying all that, and then possibly finding your self on a battle field and countless numbers of people no doubt want to kill you, if you look an officer in the eye or speak when you have not been spoken to is dangerous, if your lucky your still have some skin on your back when you get flogged, someone is barking out there orders day in day out, and perhaps they don`t always make sense, but i`re think your find that an officer is a god, or at least he thinks that every thing resolves round him, and you might have to think about
