When other people say _"nobody has done this before"_ it sounds like they're telling you how great they are, but when Paul says it it sounds more like he's telling you this to pass the information along to you, because you probably didn't hear it anywhere else.

Wow that is an awesome tip. See this is the type of stuff lost when you don't do apprentice type work anymore. A master passing on little things that make life easier and ultimately your shop more successful.

Only just watched this,wished I had before, as I have several older files where the smaller cutting edges are badly worn. This method will mean the files can continue being used & not yet need replacing. Thank you Paul these small things make a big difference.

Mr. Sellers, I wish to thank you for the numerous hints, suggestions and tips that you freely share with us all. I am on a very limited budget and your tips to extend the life of my saws and other tools are invaluable to me. Long life and blessings to you.

Quite brilliant. In addition to the angled edge of the file not wearing and catching it also lets the faces of the file align more properly with the geometry of the cutting part of the saw teeth as opposed to aligning with the bottom angle of the gullet (which is nearly meaningless). Well done. Can't wait to go try it.

BRILLIANT! now, where's my Guinness... Thanks Paul! I saw the video, but skipped over it for lack of time all week. Now I see exactly what you're accomplishing and I love it because three-square files are rather sparsely stocked at the local hardware. I need to buy some really good files for sharpening, can only get those hit/miss "world sourced" Nicholsons now.

Great video, as always, Paul. My question is whether it is necessary or desirable to use the hacksaw tip you mention in this video every time that the saw is sharpened? If not, how often should this be done? Will the bottom flat of the saw file continue the work of the hacksaw blade as the teeth are sharpened in the future? Thank you again for sharing your knowledge with the world. You always have the best ideas. I hope that you find the time to give more classes here in the USA. I really enjoyed the last class and hope to attend another.

Great technique! It works!Now a question is can this be done in some way to my circular or table saw blades. I have a recently bought Dewalt Comnapct Table Saw and the blad was great when it was new and now it needs sharpening since I get some smoking. Or maybe it needs cleaning.

Could this method potentially make the teeth weaker and more prone to bending? I would think that making the valleys deeper would change the position of the bending moment if only a tiny bit.

Do you need a HSS hacksaw blade or will the more common carbon steel one do?
@Frankowillo6 жыл бұрын
Great tip, Paul. However, I'm curious about the saw teeth you were filing. Since the saw teeth had no fleam, was that a rip saw with negative rake? Cheers, Frank.

+Paul Sellers how long have you been using this method? Has there been any noticeable loss in the teeth/saw itself with the method repeated over and over the years with the reliefs getting deeper?
@MultiAlxndr8 жыл бұрын
I'd assume that you would only re-cut the relief cuts when you got to the bottom of the original saw cut through filling the teeth so the relief cuts wont get deeper in relation to the teeth

Hi Paul. Great video, but I have a query. To my undersanding, standard CARBON STEEL hacksaws WILL NOT cut the steel in handsaws without gradually becoming blunt (after say 10 minutes of continual use). My conclusion is that there is no way that you can utilise a carbon steel hacksaw on several saws, it is more the opposite, you use several hacksaws on one handsaw. My question is, is your hacksaw a carbon steel one or is it a HSS hacksaw blade? From research, I learnt that HSS blades can cut through wider variety of steels, including carbon steel. Is your hacksaw blade a HSS one? If the hacksaw blade you have used is a CARBON STEEL one, the only conclusion is that your handsaw blade is made from mild steel, and I very much doubt this is the case. Awaiting your advice, many thanks
@gazpal4 жыл бұрын
This method works using regular and bi-metal hacksaw blades, but the best way for you to find out is to try it yourself. Sharpenable saw blades aren't as hard as saw blades with flame hardened teeth, but this is why sharpenable saw plate doesn't tend to lose teeth if e.g. you accidently discover a nail.

Paul, could you take a file and pass it over a grinder to grind the bottom of the "v" on the file, I think it would be a time saver and work in the same manner. Thanks for all your tips
