That's a common misconception. I've been working on them since the '70s and the quality has always been all over the place. A ton of handwork goes on at Gibson and not every employee is a master. I've had my hands on Gibsons from the 40's through today and there are great ones, mediocre ones, and awful ones from every decade. They actually do ship some great instruments today - and they ship stuff that should have stopped at the dumpster outside their factory. That's why if you're smart... if you want a new Gibson, you'll forget buying online and play and inspect before you buy.

@Tioga Fretworks Agreed, buy them from a store, play them, get a great one because they still make great ones and crap ones, not all mediocre ones.

Yeah, I was confused about that too. I also really wanted to know whether the neck is stronger now because of said glue? Haha, thanks for this neat video and for being so stand up about what was an otherwise unfortunate situation!

Michael Furman There are a couple different types of TiteBond...the blue label sold in stores is perfectly fine. It cleans so easily with a damp rag since it is water-based. The trick is to get contact on all surfaces...shaved toothpicks or pipecleaners help push glue all the way into the crack. As long as you clamp properly and allow proper curing time (longer in more humid weather), the join will be stronger than the wood.

I did this to a BC Rich recently. I found one I wanted in a pawn shop and the scarf joint was coming apart. I just glued it sanded it wiped on some minwax wipe on ploy, it was not a finished neck, and sanded that down with some super fine sandpaper and done. Killer repair video!!! I totally dig this very cool.

@PicksPaints
@PicksPaints 6 жыл бұрын
It is a common repair, however this case was actually a fairly uncommon break. Most of the breaks are just at the back of the headstock referred to as the headstock smile. This one is the easiest of this type of neck break to repair due to the length of the break and location. That gave a HUGE surface area to glue. Most headstock/neck breaks aren't that nice and are a lot more difficult to repair. Many times, the breaks end up breaking the headstock veneer, and the gluing surface area is quite small. Just glue and clamps won't cut it on many of them. Then the touch-up becomes something of nightmarish.

Great video! If you have a headstock break on an expensive guitar, give it to a pro. It’ll cost you some money, but your baby will be as good as new. Otherwise, try it yourself. I have done it a couple of times, and it works really well. The last one I did was on an Ibanez S320. Headstock was completely ripped off, several chucks of wood missing. Got it fixed and still holds after more than a year!

My early 90s Epiphone Les Paul broke the same way last year. Locally, it was going to cost $600 to be professionally repaired and he didn't think it was worth while for my guitar. I repaired it myself after watching some KZbin videos and reading blogs. I used diluted Titebond glue injected into the the crack with a pipet, then clamped it as tight as I could. I can still feel a very slight bump at the repair (a little extra glue), but it was pretty easy and the guitar is playable. Tim's repair is definitely better than mine, but it saved the guitar. I didn't repaint the crack, so my guitar has a smile in the neck.

It was awesome that you bought him a new "identical" guitar and fixed up the old one! If that was my guitar I wouldn't be happy, quite upset actually. You gave away "My guitar"! I don't want a new one that looks the same, I want "my guitar", scars and all. If it were me I would also flip the bill for the repair. When you do something so philanthropic ask if they have any sentiment attachment to that guitar or anything, you may be surprised. Good friend of mine has little attachment to his guitars but don't you dare touch his amp.

Fascinating to watch! I broke my 2nd guitar, when I was 17 back in the 80s. It fell as I put it down, and slammed into a steel heater fixed to the wall. The tension on the strings and the impact made the headstock crack very badly. I was inspecting it when the final break occurred and it basically smacked me in the nose with the release of energy from the string tension (ouch) and left a scar, that I still have to this day, 40 yrs later :D
