The sharpening device doesn't matter too much from what I've come to realize. It's all about technique and being consistent in the way you do it. Gramps sharpens his Victorinox on the bottom of a ceramic cup and makes fun of my "fancy" tormek and whatnot, good old times

I’ve been using a Kalamazoo 1X42 for fifteen years and I get my knives stupid sharp. The 1X42 felt belts and leather stropping belt is where the magic happens!!

I use one of these to sharpen my knives as well (though I don't go to all the you do with stropping). I have been sharpening against the the backstop, but I'm thinking the way you do it is better. I'm going to try back the back stop off and try it.

Very good. I have many ways to sharpen since I got into knife collecting a couple years back. While my edges are good the paper towel kicks my ass. My very best edges get a few inches then snag.

I was about to buy a Ken Onion worksharp for $120 and the attachment for $70 that changes the belt orientation and has an angle guide. Thats too much fkn money and before you even buy additional belts for it. I'm going to just buy the 1x30 belt sander from Hazard Fraught instead.

Glad you seem to enjoy sharpening your knives...I much prefer dulling them. Just spent 3 days “In them thar hill’s” beating on a bucket of blades. And being my usual self, I didn’t think of documenting any of it till the last few hour’s. I actually did make a few crappy videos I’ll probably be embarrassed to show. It’s a step in the right direction. Maybe you can teach an old dog new tricks...lol

I couldn’t ask for better weather. Trip was a gear test and tune along with conditioning myself for a big trip in a few week’s. Acclimating to altitude and cold... “embrace the suck” so they say...Playing with blades is always a bonus.

I used 1/8 inch angle iron and bolted it directly to the platform. Then cut it at an angle. Then I use a digital angle finder to set it

That’s actually some angle iron. The tape is to keep the blades from scratching. I’ll be making a video on it shortly

Isn't a 15 degree edge gonna roll like a wood shaving when it gets put under any kind of hard use? Like I understand that degree on a gentleman's folder, but a fixed blade? Never seen it before is all.

@@peterbiltknifeguy all you KZbin knife sharpeners act like you have some crazy skill. You're literally metal finishers. You put it in the jig, you move up in grits. You polish. Wow. The fact that you guys all need 3 different 1x30 sanders and all that just means that you don't really have master level skills. Being a knife sharpener means one of 2 things. 1. You have almost no usable skills, otherwise. 2. You failed at whatever else you were doing before you decided to sit in a closet grinding on metal. You're not all that, man. Sharpening knives is a 1/10 AT BEST actual "skill". Sorry to burst your little "flannel and leather aprons" dream bubble.

you measure the bevel afterwards? ur initial 70 degree against the running soft belt seems reaching an approximate 15 degree
