this video came up on rotation, always good to see what works for others, worked in metal finishing all my working life, I would add a stage after the green compound and use white/hifin, It is probably also worth buying a sharpening leather strop. I usually use a pine + leather strop, done properly you are talking razor blade sharp. but this video has reminded me I need to spend a morning sharpening my chisels so thanks youtube

Good video. I'd recommend securing the sandpaper so you don't round over the edges of the chisel and blade as a result. Also, just a hint, make a board with stop blocks set back from the edge the distance needed for each commonly used bevel angle. 25°, 30°, etc. Then just butt the edge of the guide to the edge of the board, push the chisel blade to the stop block, tighten and you're set. And check for a burr as you sharpen, a lot. Try some shapy on the bevel to see where you're shapening as well. Nice edge by the way.

Great Video on the sharpening process. One tip for you, instead of pouring the water/washing liquid onto your stone and drenching it, use one of those spray bottles that gardeners use to spray water on their plants. Get them from Wilkos or the £ shop and then you would get a nice spray on the stones. Just an Idea??? Thanks, Barry (from West Kirby, Wirral)

I also use wet and dry paper. I'd recommend autosol instead of the green compound. Only £3.50 from wilko. There is also a uk company that sells wet and dry up to 7000 grit. I go through 3000,5000 and 7000 grit when polishing. Axminister also have self adhesive rolls for around £7 each which can be stuck to glass or mdf which are also quite useful they do 800,1200 and 2500. I'd be careful as I have had similar diamond plates and they do go out of flat quite quickly.

Like vid, man after my own heart except i get fed up before i get the mirror finish right the way across the surface, got to get a bit more patience lol i just watched stumpy nubbs talking about diamond stones think its just if you want to go steps further but apparently some fluids are to thick as they basicly fill the stones sharpening peaks up and i suppose sort of make the stone smooth, ( stumpy on diamond stones) if you haven't already seen it, but like you said your method works for you and so does washing up liquid for me too, and sometime i think thats sharp enough with an helping hand from an hammer (rough i know) lol, good to see someone else from the uk normally a lot from usa not that thier not good, keep vids up someone will always watch them and learn something i think the key is the explanation and vid quality and yours seemed bang on👍

Very nicely done. Clear, complete, with links. I have a stone I acquired from an old shed. Anyone know how to find out what 'grit' it might be (doesn't say on the box, which looks 60s vintage). And do all stones need water/oil lubrication? It seems to work fine without, but perhaps this is a bad plan? I discovered that screwfix gadget earlier today - good to see how it's used and that it does the job. I've been hand-sharpening for years, which of course tends to produce a curved bevel and off-square end. I reckon it's time to spend a fiver and do it better.

Hi Keith. I'm looking at buying the Faithful diamond sharpening stone which is 400/1000 grit. Would that be ok for my chisels/plane etc or is the jump in grits be too much? Would I need an inbetween grit before the 1000. Thank you

Nice video. When I sharpen my chisels or blades.....I always finish my polish on leather and alternate a back stroke for each side about 10-15 times. it will eliminate any bur....and they get so sharp that i get scared to test on shaving arm hair.....I once cut myself testing once....and only knew it cut because I could feel the drag of the blade....didn't feel the cut itself.....Anyway, I'm sure if you alternate back strokes on the MDF, you should get similar results.

+Chris Bruinsma thanks Chris. In my experience the chisel is the most dangerous tool in the shop... maybe it's just my poor technique though!
