I like this machine compared to the Lisle, which I found extremely tedious to use. I'd love to see how to split the points. Dad taught me how to sharpen bits freehand at home. When he became my boss in the mill he showed me the Lisle and gave me the pamphlet. He caught me sharpening freehand one day. He asked why. The Lisle takes too long to set up for each size and I was taught well. That was the last time I used it.

The key to sharpening a drill bit is, will it cut after sharpening. You proved that at the end of the video. I have both a older Dardex and drill doctor both. The biggest problem of both is getting the bit position properly for a correct grind. The Dardex is usually no problem. But the Drill Doctor, I could never get it to sharpen a bit worth a flip that would cut without applying heavy pressure! I'm sold on the Vevor drill sharpener. Thanks for sharing, Ken

I am a 45 plus year toolmaker and appreciate a properly ground drill. Although the price is a little more I would like to pay for home shop use, my profession has spoiled me in appreciating a drill that drills to size and finish quality. One more point is your recommendation of researching the proper geometry and nomenclature of a drill bits is spot on. Lyle - Two good videos this morning with great explanation and camera work. I was fortunate enough to snag a Darex M5 sharpener at a school auction that was not used much at all - like you I inhabit auctions and got it for a third of the Vevor cost, was very lucky. The Vevor is a somewhat simplified version of that to make it more economical to build but get the job done. Agree that with older eyes it gets harder to do the smaller drills. It would be great to see a video using the web thinning feature to compare, but I can guess how it works from looking at the setup. Keep up the good work. Dale

Larger drills are easier to sharpen than small ones especially with a belt sander. They are large enough so that lip relief and length are more easily measured. If kept after keeping a large drill sharp isn't too bad. If damaged it is time consuming to grind the damaged areas away.

Interesting sharpener...I saw that one that Abom used, the machine that is 100% a drill bit grinder only. It's fairly rugged and heavy duty made which uses some sort of a cam lobe to move the bit to get just the right relief or behind the cutting edge. That one is likely thousands of dollars and no longer made so this Vevor seems fairly decent for the DIY shop.

The MRCM MR-13D has both the Split Pointing and Web Thinning features making it almost identical in functionality to the Motom BSM 13 DUO but for a significantly lower price tag 😉 The Motom comes with a few shim plates which you just pop over the top of the Chuck Ports to quickly make the cuts a little shallower for one-off jobs without the need to fiddle with stop pins or eccentrics which have to be fiddled with again to reset your default settings at the end of such one-off jobs. Apart from that and perhaps the final build quality & finish, functionally the MR-13D and the BSM 13 DUO both do the same operations. Just saying 😎👍

You don't have to whack the pristine sharpened drill on anything to release the drill from the collet. Just keep loosening the collet and you should feel it become a little tight again. Just keep loosening and the drill will free itself, as the little retaining lip inside the collet chuck draws the collet back out. I have had this sharpener for a while, despite having good eyesight and can sharpen drills manually just fine, I still use this sharpener now, it's great, especially as I drill mostly stainless steel.

@@mrpete222 The split point function is also great (and I would welcome your part 3 video to this machine). I did have to adjust the knob on top to get the point to meet in the middle but it's worth taking some time to get that right, and I don't let the drill drop in the hole, I gently lower it down so as to not damage / prematurely wear out the sharp 90 degree cutting edge of the wheel that cuts the split point. I don't bother looking down that hole for the main grind, I just listen to the sound and sharpen till I don't hear any more grinding happening. Maybe a part 4 could look at the diamond wheel. Maybe with the addition of a shop made rest or tool holder, this machine could double as a carbide lathe tool or tungsten electrode grinder? I'm tempted to try with my machine.

Adam Booth has demonstrated more than one way to do it by hand and gage on larger bits and huge grinders but .. he's been doing it for a lot of years.... This machine seems to make it more fool proof but I am a large obstacle to that one ....

I have a number of drill grinders and the easiest to use is the Optima. No changes beside holder for drill size, edge setup is optical so the drill helix doesn't come into play and the split point grinding is spot on. My Drill Dr always seemed to require my tongue in exactly the right spot in my cheek and the Lisle 91000 was never set near the right size. I still use the Lisle for flat point and 3/4 flute but that's pretty rare. I also have a small Christen for the small drills the Optima is not really set for with coarser wheel. Big downside of the Optima is price but both of mine were auction purchases, one for $100 and it came setup for carbide.

Nice video and a nice looking drill grinder and to be honest I believe it's easier to setup than the Lisle 91000 in the jig. I have the Lisle and if I only used a drill grinder for 1/2" or less I believe I would take the Vevor over the Lisle. Don't get me wrong I really like my Lisle but even it isn't just set and go and there are a few tricks you learn as you use it. When sharpening 1/2" or smaller drill bits I go with 118 degree but on anything larger than 1/2" I have gone to sharpening at 135 degree's since it presents with a smaller surface area on the material and requires less force plus at 135 degree's drilling harder material is a lot easier. Split point drills are the only way to go. All sizes drill far easier with much less feed force. I think I would remove and discard the fan that's stacked onto the grinding wheel. Not a bad bit sharpener. Better than most but not factory quality either. I see a change of angle or facet on the flank of the bit which makes for an improperly shaped chisel point. That will result in less than ideal performance. The change in angle on the flank of the bit should be gradual and it looks like this machine produces a faceted flank. It's nice to see that Mr. Pete addressed the issue of equal lip length by observing the chips ejected on both sides. Another good test for sharpening quality is the drilled hole diameter accuracy. Unequal lips will produce oversize holes.

There's also a model MR-20G that can take drill bits up to about 3/4" or 20 mm, it costs more or less twice as much as this one.

Instead of smashing the freshly cut drill bit to remove it. Try unscrewing the collet more until you feel it break free. The bit will fall out then.

I currently have a Drill Doctor 750X (I use 135 points), it worked well when I first got it, but the split points were always crap. There's a ton of plastic components, and it hasn't held up well. For split points, I actually take the top of the machine off now, and duck down with a faceshield and grind them manually (freehand). This machine looks *much* more rigid and accurate! Has anyone else had a similar experience with Drill Doctor?

That is a nice machine, thanks for the review. I would like to see it cut some split points - thanks!

You won't believe some bits I bought years ago from China.. they were sharpened backwards. Basically the relief angle went up instead of down.

Yes, I would believe you. I’ve seen the same thing.

Amen on the comical instructions.

Excellent video. I have one of these ordered. If my drills already have a split point I need to keep sharpening them that way correct?

Not necessarily

I'm sure that it is a fine tool, but for the cost up to $500.00 it should come with American sized collects. I will stay with my Drill Doctor which grinds up to 49/64 " diameter very well in my opinion. The Drill Doctor has served me for years now.

Mr. Pete, folks should get themselves a copy of the Engineers Black Book to help themselves with sharpening drills, it has all the information you will need. Kindest regards. Joe.

What about coatings on drills. What do you recommend?

Dear Lyle, is this a CBN wheel, I recently purchased a CBN wheel for my drill bit sharpener and found it has very few sparks and I need no coolant to keep bit cool....great video you have done here, Paul opps, just watched part one and saw it is CBN.....Vevor had no info on their site as regards wheel types.....cheers, Paul

Very interesting. I am curious as to how the relief is achieved. Does the rotating mechanism have a cam action?
@ruben_balea Жыл бұрын
Yes, it does, for some reason in the video it is more difficult to appreciate than in person.
