A how-to for beginners. I owe credit to many people on youtube for my learning how to sharpen. Murray Carter being one of the main influences in my sharpening style.

I just needed a quick HowTo, on knife sharpening... your video was the top few. It worked. I used 220 paper and thicker machine oil. It worked. Thanks. Could condense the video to 2 min in the beginning simply as instructions, followed by you actually showing it. But great job over all! Thank you.

This is one of the best and easiest tutorials to follow that produce results, but it needs further expansion on things not to do, as 50% of the people following still end with either blunt knife or sharp in certain areas.

What brand of rubbing compound do i buy?
@justincrawford55894 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the vid. I cut out plastic molds with a short shive. Our company uses a block of color coded grades of metal/paper color coded. Metal code with a high too light grit. Red is high grit blue is lowest pending how you rotate the sharping block. It goes in this sequence. Red( high) yellow mid ( green) then blue for polish too finish off them burs...

Thank you so much. I have a old lansky and was going to up grade. I think I'll use the money now to buy more sand paper. Thanks for saving me money

Is the buffing compound on cardboard the same as a 5000-8000 Grit sandpaper? Is it just for polishing? Awesome video by the way! Gonna start sharpening my first knife! :D Thanks for the tips!
@Do_Everything875 жыл бұрын
Yes, the use of buffing compound as a strop acts essentially like a higher grit.

Rigging a lansky hone with different grits of sandpaper will it do the same job as the original hones?
@Do_Everything876 жыл бұрын
Yeah for sure. There is a video somewhere on youtube of a guy who did exactly that with good results.

Can you start out with a higher grid of paper? Like 600 then to 800 ? Excellent video
@Do_Everything877 жыл бұрын
Yes absolutely. If there is no visible damage to the edge you could even start at 1000.
@skyrimax8876 жыл бұрын
Sean C What about 1200?
@chrischoi5586 жыл бұрын
starting higher takes longer, but poses no inherent threat to the blade. that being said, starting too high would a) use up more sandpaper, and b) might tire your arms/hands out which may or may not lead to loss of ability to keep the blade at a steady angle.

What about stabilize knife first then rub the sandpaper on it. Does it matter? i can grab the edge and also go 2000 Grit from 400 but still cant slice soft tomatos easily. Dont have polisher so i ended up with 2000. İsnt 2000 enough? To cut soft tomato or to shave my arm. I couldnt do both already. Maybe i did something wrong, dont know
@Do_Everything875 жыл бұрын
Yeah you could do it that way. Also if you don't have polishing compound to finish, you can use just plain cardboard or a leather belt on a table to strop the edge. If you do everything just right, you can shave arm hair and cut soft tomatoes after really coarse grits. The higher grits just smooth it out a little more.
@mehmetberattas56575 жыл бұрын
Sean C thanksfor answer. I also think i couldshave my arms coarse grits. Im doing wrong probably, ill try again a couple of Times more

@@mehmetberattas5657 I also had these issues. Did you manage to sort the problem out? And how?
@mehmetberattas56575 жыл бұрын
Marlon unfortunately. I couldnt handle it, im using dull knifes still :(
@martinerhard84474 жыл бұрын
Problem could be the knife steel you are using 1000 grit can easily be enough to get a shave

How long will that "cheap" knife hold its sharp edge if you use it for preparing food or your dinner?
@gepliprl85583 жыл бұрын
After cutting several lemons you can feel it starts to get dull. It also takes time and much pressure to sharphen kitchen knives unless they're made of high quality metal.

Aren’t you only suppose to sharpen one way?
@Do_Everything875 жыл бұрын
You can if you want, but it's not necessary. You can remove steel and form a burr in either direction.
@roidblitzed4 жыл бұрын
Turtle mob. Certain knives should only be shapened one way. You can tell by looking at them. And many hand tools should only be sharpened one way as well. As far as the typical knife, both ways
