Flattening or leveling stones is paramount to achieving a consistent edge. If they're not leveled, the bevel of the blade is not contacted evenly, the edge angle varies, and consequently, cutting performance and edge stability are drastically reduced.

Guys, remember that CBNs with a metal bond will require leveling no more than once a year (well, maybe once every six months if you sharpen every day) - THIS IS THE BEAUTY OF THESE BARS - minimal maintenance, maximum durability, AND NO LUBRICANTS OR WATER AND NO DIRT (At the end of the work, you wipe the bars with oil to remove sludge, or wash them under a tap with water and dry them)!
P.S.
Dear Mike Lovett (The famous Knifemaker who work with Bob Loveless & Jim Merritt), I was opening & leveling these bars for you - this is my gift from RESPECT FOR YOU AS A GREAT MASTER FROM WHOM I TOOK AN EXAMPLE, as well as Bob Loveless! If you need to leveling it again, I will do it WITH PLEASURE FOR YOU, MY FRIEND!

Guys, I also have such sharpening CBNs stones - they are amazing because they work with ANY STEEL AND DO NOT get greasy. In addition, these 17 mm thick CBN stones are the best dimensional solution since 17 mm are between Apex's standard 1 and 1/2 inches. This way you can freely sharpen curved knife blades, and at the same time, they work as fast as a 1-inch standard Boride T2. Thus, 17mm is the best solution for the home!

Mr. Levitt Now that I've had a chance to really try these stones, I'm very impressed! I have a lot of diamond stone here. Simple plated stones, Venev Diamond Stones that are an non metallic binder along with Jande and Columbia Gorge. Nothing, and I mean nothing cuts like these stones. Fast, but the finish they leave on the blade is crisp like I've never seen before. Even the corser grits such as the 550 and 650 grits shave well, smooth in paper slicing but have an aggressive nature that has to be felt to believe. So aggressive in fact that care must be taken around the edges. Not for the careless user! I will be ordering more of these stones. The ones shown here are for fixed angle sharpeners, but I do need to pick up a couple of bench stones. It's on the too do list! I can't thank you enough for pepping these stones for me. I already have many hours using them on from D-2, 154-cpm, to M-4 and S90V. These stones are like the Honey Badger. They don't care! Nothing is too tough for the. :

Thank you Mr.Lovett for such kind words, however, I was only leveling the stones, and the main work was the workers and engineers of the Poltava Diamond Tool Plant who were able to create such products!

I have had 17mm wide CBN bars for two years now. The person who proposed making such bars solved two problems. First: they should be more universal than 25 mm wide, and work better on knives with a curved cutting edge. Second: 17 mm bars should be much cheaper, and they are almost 2 times cheaper. Both problems were successfully solved. I am 77, and I enjoy using these bars myself, and so do my sons. 17 mm wide bars, in my opinion, are optimal for every home where a man wants to perfectly sharpen all his knives himself, for the kitchen, hunting and fishing. Good luck and health to everyone!

Yes, guys! At the moment, CBN stones are the best in the world! Of course it’s a pity - the era of natural stones like Arkansas, Washite, Lynn Idwall, etc. has passed. Yes, CBN stones do not require frequent leveling and I flatten them no more than once every year and a half...

I do still use a lube from time to time that is designed for Diamond and CBN tooling made by a company in Britain. (Trend). It is very thin and cleans any loading from stones such as Diamond Matrix stones and wipes off clean. The only reason I use it is it gives a slight cushioning effect to the stone on the final passes which caused it to give a finer finish as if stepping down one notch to a finer stone for final burr removal in very light passes. I find that this gives a keener edge and the edge no longer requires stropping. A time saver! But as pointed out, with Metal Bond CBN , it is absolutely not necessary and I do not use the lube for quick sharpening when working the knife hard. It is simply one more tool in the Arsenal. ;
