I have had 17mm wide CBN bars for two years now. The person who proposed making such bars solved two problems. First: they should be more universal than 25 mm wide, and work better on knives with a curved cutting edge. Second: 17 mm bars should be much cheaper, and they are almost 2 times cheaper. Both problems were successfully solved. I am 77, and I enjoy using these bars myself, and so do my sons. 17 mm wide bars, in my opinion, are optimal for every home where a man wants to perfectly sharpen all his knives himself, for the kitchen, hunting and fishing. Good luck and health to everyone!

Guys, I also have such sharpening CBNs stones - they are amazing because they work with ANY STEEL AND DO NOT get greasy. In addition, these 17 mm thick CBN stones are the best dimensional solution since 17 mm are between Apex's standard 1 and 1/2 inches. This way you can freely sharpen curved knife blades, and at the same time, they work as fast as a 1-inch standard Boride T2. Thus, 17mm is the best solution for the home!

Mr. Levitt Now that I've had a chance to really try these stones, I'm very impressed! I have a lot of diamond stone here. Simple plated stones, Venev Diamond Stones that are an non metallic binder along with Jande and Columbia Gorge. Nothing, and I mean nothing cuts like these stones. Fast, but the finish they leave on the blade is crisp like I've never seen before. Even the corser grits such as the 550 and 650 grits shave well, smooth in paper slicing but have an aggressive nature that has to be felt to believe. So aggressive in fact that care must be taken around the edges. Not for the careless user! I will be ordering more of these stones. The ones shown here are for fixed angle sharpeners, but I do need to pick up a couple of bench stones. It's on the too do list! I can't thank you enough for pepping these stones for me. I already have many hours using them on from D-2, 154-cpm, to M-4 and S90V. These stones are like the Honey Badger. They don't care! Nothing is too tough for the. :<)KnifeMaker/Mike/Retired after over 47+ years in the Craft

Albert, I have been testing extensively the stones I first got from you. The the 550 JIS Grit is proving to be a top notch performer. Smooth, efficient and leaves a very aggressive tooth pattern in the High Vanadium Blades I have here. I will be testing the other grits shortly. I am currently testing the Dual Grit method in which the non logo side of the Blade is sharpened to the 550 grit and the logo side of the blade sharpened at 1500 and also testing 3000 grit on said side. The results are very impressive. I cannot begin to tell you how much cardboard I've cut so far in testing. Near 50 pounds worth so far. The Dual grit method is proving to give both a keen edge that slices smoothly yet has a bite than no polished edge can give. Rather than sliding off tough cuts, it aggressively digs in and cuts like a laser. One has t be very careful of how the edge is touched as it cuts with the slightest pressure or movement. I have to tell you that the 550 Grit stone is amazing!!! ( I have much more testing planned ongoing). KnifeMaker/Retired after over 47+ years in the craft.

Yes, guys! At the moment, CBN stones are the best in the world! Of course it’s a pity - the era of natural stones like Arkansas, Washite, Lynn Idwall, etc. has passed. Yes, CBN stones do not require frequent leveling and I flatten them no more than once every year and a half...

Remember that CBNs with a metal bond will require leveling no more than once a year (well, maybe once every six months if you sharpen every day) - THIS IS THE BEAUTY OF THESE BARS - minimal maintenance, maximum durability, AND NO LUBRICANTS OR WATER AND NO DIRT (At the end of the work, you wipe the bars with oil to remove sludge, or wash them under a tap with water and dry them)!
@michaell397

I do still use a lube from time to time that is designed for Diamond and CBN tooling made by a company in Britain. (Trend). It is very thin and cleans any loading from stones such as Diamond Matrix stones and wipes off clean. The only reason I use it is it gives a slight cushioning effect to the stone on the final passes which caused it to give a finer finish as if stepping down one notch to a finer stone for final burr removal in very light passes. I find that this gives a keener edge and the edge no longer requires stropping. A time saver! But as pointed out, with Metal Bond CBN , it is absolutely not necessary and I do not use the lube for quick sharpening when working the knife hard. It is simply one more tool in the Arsenal. ;<) KnifeMaker/Retired after over 47+ years in the Craft

I was on board until he just murdered a chisel like that. You do NOT grind an angle on the flat surface. On chisels you have a flat surface, then on the other side you have a main grind angle and a secondary bevelled edge. The back side remains completely flat

Why's he angle the blade into the stroke for each side? Seems it's putting a much steeper bevel than the angle set into the rods by the base. I thought the knife should be held straight up and down, 90* from the surface, all the time for both sides while doing the strokes.
@carlh7795
@carlh7795 Жыл бұрын
Not doing it every time, just after the first couple strokes. Looks like about a 5* change from vertical. Or is it just my visual perception that's off?

The angle changes every time and comes with experience - Mr.Chase is a sharpener with HUGE experience and having feeling about taken steel in his hands, he himself adds an angle depending on the requirements of sharpening. You, too, will feel the steel and change the angle after 10 years of sharpening knivesexperience. 90 degrees is for beginners in the instruction manual.

@@carlh7795 I think that to analyze the manner of sharpening each master so deeply is the same as discussing the individual handwriting of each person. There are general rules of the manufacturer - recommendations, but with experience, the hand, head, motor skills, experience, knowledge of the material, the state of the machine itself, etc. make their own adjustments to the sharpening of EVERY PERSON. For example, Mr.Chase is the best in the world now, but this does not mean that you cannot to be a better and do better than him ... and then everyone will try to solve "puzzle" how YOU sharpens so well and at what angle he (you) does it .

@@stranik1966 ok, I have been sharpening my knives for about 20 years. Seems a bit out of place to have a pre-angled system like this being used to try to intentionally put on a convex bevel or micro bevel. Is that how the customers of this product are expected to use it? If that's the aim of the customer of this, why not just make it a nice big flat stone? I do see a value in a micro bevel which is more obtuse than the majority of the edge. It allows for very quick touch-ups.

@@carlh7795 Oh, I did not know that you have such experience in sharpening - you are an experienced user, I take off my hat. To be honest, I know such subtleties about the knife sharpening that you ask. I just walked around the SHOT Show 2023 exhibition and made this video inspired by the work of Mr. Chase. There at the end of the video there is his contact information and he, as a person, is VERY OPEN FOR DIALOGUE AND DISCUSSION. I think your thoughts will interest him - I'm sure that Spyderco is looking for such users to improve the quality of their product. Please, call to Mr.Chase, maybe you'll even get paid for your comments to Spyderco, try it! Mr. Chase will be pleased to know your opinion and the fact that he has become popular on KZbin, he will pass on your thoughts and advice to the management of Spyderco ... and maybe this will be a good collaboration - GOOD LUCK, my friend .
