Whats the deal with Flattening Stones?

you can flatten any surface to any arbitrary flatness by using 3 surfaces: a, b, c. grind surface a vs b, then a vs c, then b vs c. this is how you can achieve the first flat if civilization collapses, just in case. you must grind it only against each surface in the parallel direction without a normal component

Great video! One quick thing to note though: lapping off pencil drawn grid lines is a nice guide, but the best way to be sure is with a hardware store straight edge and a spirit level. Alternatively: you can lap off grid lines several times to be sure. Speaking from experience: sometimes lapping off the lines alone isn't enough. I still get daylight off my straight edge in certain planes of the stone on the vertical axis. That said: well done!

Honestly I find that silicone carbide sandpaper ( black one ) works very well. I place it on a flat stone/glass :)

If I'm not sharpening in a regular basis, just my home knives on my king stones kit (300,1000,4000,8000) do I need atoma flattening plate? And how much time it will be used until I need to change its diamond sheet? Thank you so much

In my mind, diamond stones (or a granite block) for lapping/flattening...the “normal” lapping stones have always given me pause for some reason. It’s like you’re “transferring” the problem from one stone to another. If I use a tool for flattening, I want it to remain flat basically indefinitely. Yeah, diamond tools will wear out over time too but I’d rather deal with that problem. If you’re a real cheapskate upfront, float glass and a decent abrasive will also do the trick. In the past, I’ve flattened my cheaper stones on a $10 sheet of float glass covered in adhesive 3m and it works GREAT. The moral of the story, I think your flat references should remain flat indefinitely...that’s just one opinion, though.

To be fair I've let my stones go further than I should have and one got me by for a good few years of abuse and its still dead flat. That said using the backside for repairs wasn't quite as forgiving...

I have some cheap diamond plates lying around, would they be okay to flatten a 1K Shapton Glass?

@@_wormlet Absolutely, you won’t hurt it at all. I flatten my Shapton glass stones with diamond plates. As long as they’re relatively flat, you’re good to go.

A plate of glass and 80 grit, 120 grit, 240 grit, and 400 grit SIC Powder works amazing.

I found out aluminium oxide sandpaper on the flat glass cut and flatten my curved stone faster than using a sic powder... more less mess and it wont destroy the glass surface like using the powder will.

Abrasives like everything else, you get what you pay for. Cheaper plates will have less consistent grits, and the diamonds rip out much earlier and easier. They are often also less true than atoma plates. There are better options as well from companies like nanohone, but the price is prohibitive for many home sharpeners, and as a professional shop we get by with atomas

Is it necessary to clean the flattening stone after used? I've used once and leave some color of the grit water stone on it, will it affect to the quality of flattening?

Problem of the atoma is that it's expensive for what you use it for. Works super fast but not very cost effective. A piece of sic paper on glass is way cheaper.

Hey there, you may have covered this in the video but I was wondering if I need different level grit for both my stones. I have rougher stone and I finer stone. Could I use these products for both stones or what would I need a different level grit for both?

Some people like to have different atoma's depending on the grit of the stone they're flattening but I wouldn't say that it's absolutely necessary. Just make sure all the grit from the lower grit stones is gone before you flatten your higher grit stones and you should be fine.

How would I flatten my naniwa 12k whetstone

For higher grits you could use a higher grit diamond plate. We usually don't surpass 10k at the shop but we use an atoma 400 to keep that guy flat. A lot of people argue that you need to be careful not to use too aggressive of a flattening stone for crazy high grits and if you're having issues with the finish being too rough you could always go over it with a nagura stone but we haven't found this to make a huge difference in our experience and think thats more of an issue for harder natural stones.

Sic 240 and 400 grit powder. Put it on a flat piece of glass and rub stone.

I like an off cut piece of granite and silicon carbide powder. Probably run you about $20 for a big piece of granite and a sack of powder

Works great, and its how we fix some of our tougher low grits at the shop, or stones that are prone to glazing. It is messier and takes up more space though and I dont like using it on medium-high grit stones as some of the SIC powder tends to stick into those stones and can cause some scratching. If you're never thinning or doing bevel work though theres nothing wrong with that!

Hey Steven! We actually did link to our website in the description where you can find all of the products we touched on in the video as well as their prices, which we don't list in the video because they fluctuate based on the conversion rates when we receive them. As far as truing you truing stone you would need something like a diamond plate that is adhered to something that will always remain true like an atoma. However like we said, the naniwa truing stones shouldn't need to be trued as long as you use them frequently enough and don't let your stones get too wonky. Cheers!
