Hi, Uncle Screw Combo here. The fact that there were two Worst Fears played this game and neither targeted Mike was the true mistake that could've saved this game. Everyone did a good job of keeping him down for the most part until that point, but if someone had taken his turn, the Metamorph could have copied something else, and he wouldn't have been able to combo. This is made more apparent by the fact that he tutored multiple times, and no one viewed that in and of itself as a threat. It's not about combo existing, it's that the correct steps weren't taken to stop it, which is the biggest pro-combo argument I hear all the time ("just play better lol"). Oh, well. The mistakes in this game were bigger than Trevor's biceps. :P

Using a Path to remove Crypt Ghast (saving 1 life for Trevor) and not holding it for the Sharuum combo was probably not the best play
@MTGMuddstah6 жыл бұрын
I'm pretty sure Trevor's line of thought was that since he was losing his next turn, he really didn't want to have Matt exile his own creature with the Path. That, and in my experience, whenever someone takes your next turn, they will almost always tap you out before passing.
@Thomeyis6 жыл бұрын
Yeah, true. I'd have probably at least pointed at the Metamorph in the graveyard and said something to the tune of "Do what you will but leave a Plains untapped when you're done"

True, conversations could have been had. I think Matt was actually pretty fair to Trevor, all things considered. He could have hit the Mirari's Wake instead of the Boots with the Thrashing.

Very, very good game. Really enjoyed it. Your summary says it all: more interaction provides better games and more interesting plays (in my opinion). Agree on Sean getting greedy and on top of that not stealing the turn from the right player (note that Matt did the same mistake). But 20/20 and all that. Still, great match. Always good to see other Sharuum EDH decks, such a strong combo commander and commander in general. I have a sharuum deck thats relies on disciple of the vault, blasting station or bitter ordeal for the win and if I can not getting the combo off I can cheat in magister sphinx or a blightsteel steel colossus. Even secured wins with karn by turning darksteel forge into a creature and swinging in for game.

What makes me sad isn't the fact that a combo won. The real question is, why didn't the worst fears target the combo player? Like, why? That is what makes me mad. Always, ALWAYS take the combo players turn unless a player before them in turn order can kill you or the combo player. It either, 1, slows the combo player down if there combo only hits opponents, or 2, let's you win the game if the combo involves targeting a player. So that's what makes me sad.
@N1ghthavvk6 жыл бұрын
Either of the two Worst Fears should've targeted the Sharuum deck and / or the Path to Exile should've been kept to deal with it. Since a clone was already in the graveyard it should have been very intimidating for any of the other players. However that didn't happen, though I'm sure they'll deal with it better next time.

I'm not sure about that last combo. State-based actions (as the "legend rule") are checked whenever a player would gain priority. If Metamorph comes back as a copy of Sharuum, the ETB ability triggers, the active player has to declare a target, then the ability goes on the stack and ONLY THEN the active player gets priority and one of the two legends go to the bin, so the combo does not go off. Are there any other cards on the battlefield that I am missing and actually make this work?
@MTGMuddstah6 жыл бұрын
So this was the breakdown I found that best explained how the combo works: Start with Sharuum and Disciple in play. 1. Cast Sculpting Steel. 2. As it enters, it becomes a copy of Sharuum, and you're forced to put one of the two legendary Sharuums into the graveyard as a SBA. Which one you choose doesn't matter. 3. The ETB trigger of the Sculpting Steel Sharuum is put on the stack, targeting whichever of the two (the original Sharuum or the Sculpting Steel) is in the graveyard. 4. At the same time, Disciple triggers. You can order the ETB and Disciple trigger however you please. 5. When the ETB trigger resolves, go to #2 This works because one of the Sharuums dies as a SBA, which happens before the target of the ETB trigger is chosen. Note that Sculpting Steel can be replaced by Phyrexian Metamorph, and Disciple can be replaced by a number of similar creatures, like Blood Artist. You could also start with Disciple in play, Sharuum in the command zone (assuming EDH) or hand, and Sculpting Steel in the graveyard, getting the second artifact off the original Sharuum's ETB trigger.

I think it takes me about roughly between 6 - 8 hours depending on the game. I'm self-taught in terms of video editing, so a lot of what I do is trial and error. Things have been speeding up though as I get more into a rhythm with things though.

Can someone explain the combo to me?
@MTGMuddstah6 жыл бұрын
Basically it boils down to: 1. Sharuum brings artifacts back on entering. 2. Mike has Metamorph enter as Sharuum, which means he gets a trigger. 3. Mike has to resolve the Legendary rule prior to anything else. So he lets the real Sharuum die. 4. Mike then puts his Metamorph'd copy of Sharuum's etb on the stack to bring back Sharuum. 5. Mike then brings back Sharuum and has to resolve the Legendary rule once more. 6. He does this forever, or until he chooses a different target. This alone isn't enough to do anything, but with the Disciple of the Vault out, he can deal one point of damage each cycle of Sharuum / Metamorph to kill all of his opponents.
@ghr19906 жыл бұрын
Thanks, the part I had a hard time with was when the legendary rule applies in regards to etb abilities going off.

Screw combo. They create an atmosphere where if other people want to compete against it, your only option is to play control, or try and play a faster combo which only makes that atmosphere worse.
@MTGMuddstah6 жыл бұрын
I disagree with combo resulting in people only being able to beat it by also playing combo. Often times denying said combo can shut out a whole deck. Plus, if you're already not playing combo, you should be able to afford a few more responsive spells in your list that would otherwise dedicated to those combo cards.
@Cascade_Failure6 жыл бұрын
You may be right, but I am sadly just recounting what has happened at my local gaming store. Over the last few months during several seasons of a casual commander league all the fun and interesting commanders have vanished as commanders like Arcum Daggson, Kefnet (two of them), Zur, and other blue combo claim the top 10 spots without fail leading to other people around me either stop showing up knowing they can't compete, or start playing combo of their own.
@123nazgu6 жыл бұрын
If people really don't like combo's and insist on making a big point of it, I can only ask that they have answers to said combos.
@worldthroughabucket6 жыл бұрын
Combo's are perfectly fine if you're playing a more competitive version of EDH. For people who just build casual fun decks, combo's are incredibly lame as they just end the game on the spot.
@123nazgu6 жыл бұрын
To an extent. It's one thing if you're playing against hyper tuned dedicated combos that can goldfish consistent turn 2s and the like. However, if you are playing against combo decks like the Sharuum deck which, on average, go off on turn 5 - 7 fighting against them is more a matter of deck construction in my mind, having answers is alpha omega in any other format, and Commander shouldn't be any different.
@worldthroughabucket6 жыл бұрын
I definitely don't disagree with you that having answers should be a requisite for pretty much any deck in most formats, but I still believe that combo's have no place in any casual setting. Even in this game two players had to have an answer in hand the entire time and the moment one of them didn't/couldn't the Sharuum deck just won. The power levels between those decks were very uneven imo and it was an unfun way to end the game.
@123nazgu6 жыл бұрын
I suppose we're just gonna have to agree to disagree.
@CeltiesSin6 жыл бұрын
so, counterpoint; looking at every decklist in the game, they had plenty of ways to "answer said combo." but unless you build a deck that is just 30 cards of "answers," the odds of you having your answer in your hand when they combo off is rather slim. especially with 2 other opponents. the combo player literally just has to sit there until "oh they used their path on something good? my turn i win" plus you say having answers is the way to play other formats, yet in other formats you have 1 person to control; not 3.

I'm pretty sure Matt's combo doesn't work. When the copy of Sharuum enters the battlefield, the real Sharuum can't be targeted with the trigger, as the legendary rule that kills it applies after the trigger is put on the stack.

Man, I am ok with combos but let it at least be a decent one.. this is a two card combo, no difficulty in pulling it of, no nothing. The rest of the game was fine, but could you try to pick games that don’t end in a boring unoriginal 2 card combo? Or at least put a spoiler in the title?
@MTGMuddstah6 жыл бұрын
Technically, it was three cards because Disciple had to be there but that's just me be picky jerk (haha!). Not every game is going to be amazing, but my concern with putting a spoiler in the title is that the people who don't mind whether a game is combo or not, will inadvertently have the ending spoiled. It will alter how they think about things and instead of just enjoying the game, they'll watch for the decks that they think will be combo.
@specialkender6 жыл бұрын
Well say it's 2 card combo for the infinite etb + 1 of whichever card that makes you win =P. Anyway that's true, but to be honest when there is an Azami/Sharuum/Arcum combo deck in the same table of 3 non competitive non combo decks you already know who is going to win and how.. I mean playing with combo decks is ok, but i think then it would be more enjoyable in a match with 3 other equally combo decks. Or even better 2 combo and 2 controls?
@MTGMuddstah6 жыл бұрын
I can see what you mean, but I'm not in the habit of telling people what I think they should play. I want people to play decks they enjoy so that it comes through in the video. I think the issue was that no one properly assessed how threatening Mike was with the Metamorph in his yard. There were some pretty great spells cast the turn prior, but he was totally not the target for any of them. Things would have been very different if Matt had taken Mike's turn, for instance.
@specialkender6 жыл бұрын
Well true, anyway i'm a fan of your videos generally, you do a really good work. If i can give you a suggestion that I definetly would enjoy would be to have a counter of the number of cards in each hand. This would help both following the game and to give a clear indication in a glance of which state is a player in. Keep up the good work!
