The irony is in the detail: shatnershairpiece says above that "No one cared, but it doesn't matter" (I dispute both points but more on that another time) while over across the street on a sign above a construction frontage states proudly "WEWORK". Really, it's the guitar player. He's doing the work. Lots of it. Soul work. In fact he has to work very extra hard for the souls of the shallow sorts that didn't seem to notice. Much. Keep playing Mister shatnershairpiece: your soul is intact.

thanks for the nice comments. but here’s another reality check. I have had the yellow vested bylaw drones actually tell me to get a job at Starbucks. When I told them that I was contributing to art and culture for the city, they would say “In your opinion.” should I post that video?
@donaldmacgregor25453 жыл бұрын
@@shatnershairpiece Yup. Put it up and call them out on their arrogance. Most people aren't very good at anything and haven't pushed themselves to even try. They have no concept on how hard it really is to do so and everything that must be sacrificed along the way to survive on one's own creations. They have already got their "job at Starbucks" and have settled with that albeit begrudgingly. Their task then becomes to reduce the world to their level of misery. You're fighting an uphill battle against insurmountable odds. It's heroic and those of us involved in the "fight" see your courage. I watch the videos for that as much as the music.

It's really hard to see a street guitarist who plays Pat's pieces on KZbin. So I really enjoyed this musician's long performance of one of my favorite Pat's pieces. In spite of almost 1 hour and half version of 'Chris(This is not America)', it's not boring at all. Sometimes I've dreamed of somebody playing a long version of 'Chris' because this music is so touching and beautiful that only a few minute-playing of this song is not good enough to appreciate and feel the greatness of this jazz masterpiece. Thank you so much for your sincere effort and soul for music.

Robin, I've commented before on some of your KZbin videos. I know that your sense of humor helps you endure the seemingly endless stream of indifference you encounter from the masses on the streets. However, the public response is actually less about apathy and more about purpose. You are performing in a place of transit. People are simply in route to their destination. It's hard for us to "stop and smell the roses" or pause for anything, such as wonderful music. Clearly your playing is amply rewarding if/when they do pause...However, I think there's something far deeper that helps you endure: your love and reverence for beautiful music. The music you choose to play is profound and usually deeply moving. I've never heard anyone busk and play Pat Metheny. My favorite work of his, "April wind," followed by "April Joy," on his debut album, is as poignant as it gets. Music heals, it is tribal, in our bones. It is universal. Wherever you play, you are offering a gift to those who care to receive it. Your viewers on KZbin, counting me, are your greatest beneficiaries. Find heart in that truth, the next time you ponder the "apparent" indifference...
@shatnershairpiece3 жыл бұрын
nicely said. but remember this is also the main walk between two large tourist destinations, Canada place and gastown, that means lots of people walking casually between them not taking transit, not in a rush. It’s the same in the summer. I once made $17 in three hours on a summer night in front of a skytrain exit when it was fireworks night. that was peak relaxation and thousands of people walking casually by on a warm weekend night. busking conditions don’t get any better than that and I was a ghost. It’s a problem that runs far deeper than ‘purpose.’
@fenwayify3 жыл бұрын
@@shatnershairpiece I cannot explain it all, only offer an impression. To me, what you offer in your public performances is not as much about intrusion as invitation. Perhaps the depth and subtlety of your play fails to draw a response. People want a quick hit and then they're on to the next thing. You are the "Gunga Din" of street musicians; Tirelessly performing for little accolades and meager recompense. Still, when all is said in done...you are a better man than I, Gunga Din!...and for what it's worth, I for one will still be listening...

I doubt many people would recognize this song as it is almost 40 years old. there is very little appreciation for live music or musicians anymore. this is why all the live clubs closed down in Vancouver and I am working on the street. People just don’t care anymore. They either see music as something that should be free or they are don’t care about guitar because it’s not a popular instrument anymore like it used to be in the 70s and 80s. most people on the street see me as a homeless beggar so they have no respect for what I do. it’s all context.

There's a song by Metheny that is seared into my mind, a sort of anthem for my salad days, "Last Train Home." Used to listen to jazz nite every weekend, for years, on my local college radio broadcast. It was the song they always played as the outro to the program. Not really a Pat fan, but that tune will always hold a spot in my heart.

You know, humanity is going down the toilet! Everyone dresses like slobs! They look sloppy, for the most part people walk like they are shuffling along.. it's just pitiful!
