Thanks for the video! Just some thoughts: For tournament play, organizers could set up the terrain with several missions in mind in such a way that when objectives are placed they're in good spots. Missions can also be pre-set for the tournament rounds to make terrain lay outs easier to plan. Then with priority roll off the winner just gets to pick a side.

There are games that use alternating setup for terrain. It can add a bit of tactical decision making into the game when your board sides are set up. As they currently stand in the rulebook, they don't have any of that. So I don't see any reason to not have a board set up first then put the objectives out afterwards. Especially since they have to go on the highest level. However, one thing from MCP is that when you measure for objectives and terrain is on the board, it can get finicky when terrain is in the way. So Shatterpoint could be just trying to get you to have the objectives first so that the tokens are in the right spot.

I think you're right that practice will generally be that the table is set up, but I do like the idea of being able to place the scenery to make sure the elevation is used to it's fullest extent when there are more mission packs available down the line.

Rules are cool and I thing they will make quite interesting interactions with the play. I want to see how they work apart from ladders and walkways, on a docking bay with landed ships for example, but these things will come in play in the future I guess. Keep up the good work on videos.

I like the rules of placing objectives and then the terrain. If anything just to make life easier to get them out and I like moving to the highest point so everyone can see them and make you have to jump and things, adding in some depth to a game.

So glad you're doing these videos, breaking down the game piece by piece. It's much appreciated and building up the hype! I'm excited for the terrain use, and thinking it could be neat to deploy after the objectives are placed.. I'm not totally sure how placing the terrain works, if just one player plops it down or what.. But I think it would be neat if each player could take a turn in placing terrain to possibly influence which objectives are raised or left at ground level.. Looking forward to watching you play and cover the game.

Another great video its really helping me understand the rules. Regarding the terrain this will be my first tabletop skirmish game so I don't have that much experience but placing the terrain after makes sense as you can tailor the map to the objective rather than the terrain to be useless if its nowhere near the objective.

I feel like the set up is a good way to tell where the objectives are, certainly if they change the locations with expansions so they aren't on the edge of the building. The rules do state that the want alot of terrain so I see it as just an easy way of focusing on the objectives.

Really can't see that anyone who wants to play multiple games in an evening is going to set up the board in the "officially suggested" way. I have a feeling that the Terrain set up after is really only going to effect the very first game you play. After that you (player) is going to know where the terrain is going to go. It will be interesting to see what happens if a piece of terrain "spawns" under one of your placed characters. I haven't played a war game in a long time (never with first party terrain) So it will be interesting to see how the game uses the real terrain and not the cardboard boxes and upside down cups we used 30 years ago in college.
@davidlein2438

Well you don't deploy your characters before terrain is on the board. You just choose the mission, set up objective tokens, then set up terrain. After terrain is set up is when you deploy your squads.

I know that competitive Warhammer usually has player placed terrain, but in the interest of expediency, I very much prefer to have battlefields setup ahead of time. So I imagine that's how I and friends will be handling terrain for Shatterpoint.

I imagine in a tournament situation all the terrain will be preset. However I think that players will have the ability to slightly shift the terrain however much they would need to make sure that the objective points don't overlap the edges once it gets elevated to the highest point.

I rather like that terrain is placed after the points are marked. Makes measuring thier placement easier and then you can just place the terrain. You could even do player 2 places the first piece of terrain and then player one and back and fourth. Could do some interesting stuff there if you know you've got characters with lots of jumps and your opponent doens't you could try to place more objectives on higher elevations. All in all this is shaping up to be fun it seems and a little simpler than MCP. I'm most interested in some examples with LOS and cover as that's always my biggest sticking point with AMG skirmish games.

I believe the terrain rules are the same for MCP and I don't think I've ever played a game where the terrain wasn't on the board first. I feel like most people/events are just going to have the terrain set up before the mission packs are chosen. Setting up quickly is pretty important, especially at an event. At least we know that everyone has the same mission pack at the beginning of the games life. So setting up terrain to accommodate it will be easy.

The issues with elevation and objectives is going to push a meta with characters that can jump or fly. Putting a tokin at height 2 or 3 and being able to not really get to it without having to use several turns is going to make a set it and forget it point.

this isn't how elevation is going to work. Every unit will have the ability to climb and they can climb to any height
@starscream003
@starscream003 Жыл бұрын
@Rich_Mid Gaming I know that any unit can climb, but until an opponents unit can reach it to contest it, which may take 2 or 3 turns due to how far a unit can climb, means just more points scored. Combat is not really a priority from what I have seen, claiming objectives is priority, points win the game.

I do wish Shatterrpoint was a little bit smaller then the 3ft x 3ft it is now, so that it can fit on a Coffee table. Killteam is 30x20-ish and that is a good size but very elaborate rules for casual play, and the amount of terrain needed for it is a n investment.

I will probably continue to set out terrain like I've always used to: To get a visually interesting board with a sense of purpose. To explain, I absolutely hate those mirror tables with X pieces of scenery spread out in an even manner. Yes, the board needs to be balanced, but to me the board must tell a story. If there is a farm house, there should be meadows, pastures or fields of crops. If there is a scrap pile with droid parts there should be a machinery shop, perhaps a crane with gantries or a partially dismantled ship. If there are roads the houses shouldn't overlap them, etc. So for me, setting out the terrain after deciding objectives is like putting the cart before the horse. But I need to try it before I judge it.

I think the terrain rules are a little wonky but honestly it'll come down to the TO or the players at the table for a casual game. I'm fine with it. The terrain rules are actually pretty well written, but put a lot of faith in player communication before the game (to determine clear/obstructed etc). The cynic in me thinks the elevation thing is a good way to try to get people to buy official terrain, but I'm pretty sure I'm gonna kitbash some gw necromunda stuff if its bigger than range 2! As for setting up the table... I've played games that you set up after objectives, and in a tournament setting it's a bit time consuming, and we generally just set up the table beforehand and take it from there. Guess we'll see what the common practice is gonna be 🤷🏻‍♂️
