It's definitely a part of the song's irony and essential to establish the attitude of the "speaker" in the song. Jello shockingly omitted it when he played with his guantanamo band, choosing instead to say "blacks" -- Jello of all people should know better.

The song's character is someone who'd use that word without really considering whether they could or should as a way to demonstrate that kind of insular privileged experience with the world. The next layer of irony is that over time Jello came to understand that HE was being the character in the song by including the word without thinking about whether he should or not. It's a case where the word certainly contributes to the satire of the song but I don't think its a completely vital element. This is from a recent DK fan, I'm loving all their stuff so far

There's a reason Jello changes it my dude. Jello is the most punk person i fucking know, he wouldn't change SHIT due to political corectness, and he damn sure wouldn't censor his art. It isn't censoring, it's changing an insignificant part of lyrics to make up for cultural changes since. I'm not critisizing this artist for using it, since it's the original song, and I honestly prefer the song unmodified, but if you were to turn it off if she made it more acceptable , that I don't agree with it. I think it does, as you point out, build the charachter he's potraying in the song, so I wouldn't change the original for shit, but I feel like modern versions of the song could change the word while still getting the message across.
