On the 28th August 2016, the RPSI (Northern Operations) facilitated the annual summer excursion to Portrush, on the north coast of Northern Ireland. The locomotive in charge was UFTM/RPSI No. 85 'Merlin', a former mainline engine used by the Great Northern Railway on the Belfast-Dublin mainline. What is expected on a 'Portrush Flyer' is sun, sea, sand and steam and that's exactly what we got! We were blessed with the sunshine that day which is extremely rare in that neck of the woods!
In this video, we start off in Belfast Central Station where we see No.85 running around the mk2 coaches before cutting to the departure shot where we exit Central and head across the Cross Harbour Link. The video continues as we make our way swiftly through the Co. Antrim countryside, stopping at Antrim to be looped and flying through Ballymena Station at a fair few knots.
Upon arrival at Portrush, we see the run round procedure before we head for Dhu Varren for the first shuttle run to Coleraine and a shot at West Strand for the return. Due to operational difficulties before departure earlier in the afternoon, 85 was sent light engine to Coleraine to be turned before departure which is also featured. The video ends as we depart Portrush headed for Belfast again after an excellent day and running and of course, the fish and chips!
Enjoy the video, folks! :-)
