The only problem I see with this is by shearing the infected animal so close to the other animals they could transfer because as shearing at the beginning of the video the effected area was flying of the one you are helping and the maggots are landing on the sheep next to it and landing on their leg’s and on floor that others will be walking through.I understand that this is a problem that won’t go away and that you can only do the right thing and I appreciate how hard on a free range farm this can be. Thanks for treating this problem as quickly as possible and i don’t know how someone who is not there can complain about the sheep 🐑 and lambs,if they want free range meat and say they should not be kept in barn situation, this is what happens sometimes they can’t have it both ways.Thank you for all the pain and effort you put in on what is a hard lifestyle and maybe they should help out on a farm too truly see what it takes, sorry for rambling on it just annoying when people criticise without fully understanding what goes on

Flystrike occurs when blowflies lay eggs in warm, moist areas on a sheep and these eggs hatch into maggots, which then invade the living sheep. This can happen in spring, summer or autumn and especially when conditions are humid. Flystrike can be a significant problem for New Zealand sheep farmers. It is estimated that 2-10% of the national flock is affected by flystrike annually and the subsequent economic effects can be measured in the millions of dollars. They are shorn on a regular schedule, but obviously some of the point is that they grow wool so that it can be shorn and sold. The wool has to be a certain length to be valuable. How are they allowed to get like that???

Flystrike occurs when blowflies lay eggs in warm, moist areas on a sheep and these eggs hatch into maggots, which then invade the living sheep. This can happen in spring, summer or autumn and especially when conditions are humid. What you saw on this sheep took only a few days to occur.

You realize that this entire process of infestation takes less than a week right? The average flies entire life cycle from egg to larvae to adult to breeding to dead is less than a month. And if 10 flies lay eggs in a sheeps wool out in the middle of a pasture that's not watched by 24/7 binocular surveillance, that these eggs can be larvae that constantly burrow out flesh over the course of their larvae stage to grow fast to turn into the adult before they grow old and die as a weak larvae that didn't eat flesh which is totally unrealistic it's a parasite/pest and this can happen in measurable hours even just a couple days.

Y do your sheep have fly strike 😳

In this case it is a Wiltshire ram which should be very unlikely to actually get flystrike as they have less lanolin and shed thier wool. As you can see this one hasn't lost its back wool. That factor plus it has been perfect conditions for the flies (humid, and warm) is why this happens.

Those electric sheers are much too loud. They really should be soundproofed or muffled to a low hum.

The itchiness of this on them must be horrific. Hopefully other farmers are as considerable as you with their animals

Oh my god! I threw up in my mouth a little. Poor things, god bless real men who will take these jobs.

They should do that outside. Those maggots are going to keep burrowing inside. The sun and fresh air would be a better place .

It affects roughly 5% of the national flock each flystrike season.
