Nice effort. I bought a second-hand tyre balancer and tyre fitting machine. I'm using both for their obvious use as well as tyre buffing. A sharp blade is perfect and makes less mess than a grinder. Be really careful with what you're doing, as inhaling small rubber particles will kill you. Maybe try a sharp chisel set or use a vacuum cleaner to suck those particles.

Have you given any thought about putting a motor on the tire so that it spins? It would make it easier and probably faster and more consistent shaving tires

I have thought about it, the tricky part is making that work with different tire sizes, but this is a road I will have to travel if I do decide to CNC in the future. For now I like to feel the force required to push the tire around, thanks for the comment!

It's not tricky at all, just drive it indirectly with a roller. This way the surface speed of the tire is locked to the drive roller and will remain constant for any tire size. Many tire service tools work that way.

Great job on the build and the video! Did you consider some sort of pattern following mechanism instead of the fulcrum/arc thingy (it sure would help if there were terms for this stuff)? Disconnecting the Y axis reminds me of the way a lathe tapering attachment works. A bearing on the Y axis could ride along an exchangeable pattern and perhaps be contained to a smaller package. Also, would love to see some power feed on this guy.

I almost made exactly what you described! And it would have been more compact. Also you would have the benefit of making profiles that are rounded on the outsides and flat in the middle (which I think is what you really want). I think I'm going to revisit this subject again, probably sooner than I think. There are so many other things I want to build, but cnc would be the ultimate answer to this style of shaver. Thanks for watching and leaving a comment! You have no idea what it means to me.

Have you track tested any shaved tires to see the ET difference? I'd like to see the data on one of your videos.

I never got a chance to test them, right after covid hit they shut the racing down. We just got back to the track last month! I also had an ethical crisis, I feel like being the only one on the track with shaved tires would be cheating. Thanks for the comment!!

So do the tires last longer if shaved? Do you do them as new or used? Cool vid fam

In a racing environment, saving will shorten the life. But... if you have a new set of tires, and you lock up all 4 into a corner and cause flat spots, shaving could help to get another few good laps. 😎

Apparently in non racing applications, shaving prolongs tire life because it doesn’t hop, also it’s easier on the whole car!

That info that the other viewer gave you, is false (somewhat). There is not a shaver that you can load a program into and it will cut a profile. The Amermac shaver gives you a tool that will measure the profile of a number of different profiles of tires and then you input those measurements on to the device (which is basically what you came up with) that is attached to the shaver that guides the shaver along the profiler portion of the machine. It is all mechanical. In my opinion, the profile guides that Amermac gives you are completely useless for the tires that I shave for the track. They are about 40 years behind, tread profile wise. I have been able to decipher a standard profile setting, to use, from years of shaving tires of all kinds. Finally, for not knowing anything about shaving a tire and having someone (Hmmm? I wonder who that might have been...:), bring up some thought provoking info to stimulate your already active imagination, lol, you've done a hell of job! You should be proud. That is quite an accomplishment to build that shaver from scratch......... Oh, and by the way - I have two of those Amermac machines! One of each model. PS - you do have a talent for the video thing too. It was very entertaining. I look forward to your next EPIC!...... instagram.com/p/BjQT57YlB4t/ This is the same shaver you showed in the beginning of your video, the 1200R. I learned how to profile shave a tire, without a profiler attachment and I lugged it to 3 SCCA Runoffs when Toyo was the Spec tire. The finished product instagram.com/p/BjQUeKiltpI/
