I thought new knives that say on the box "Razor Sharp" were sharp, they don't even shave hair, then I started learning sharpening techniques and now holly crap!!! I am cutting leather and the back to hair with the same knife... scary how technique makes the difference.

I remember watching this when I was younger thinking it was the coolest thing because he sharpened it himself. I’m not that ambitious these days but I do use a straight razor nowadays and it kind of started with this video. Softer skin, fewer ingrown hairs etc.

Hi, please tell me something... I see only the 'slice paper' or 'shave the hair from your arm' put forward as an accepted measure of how sharp a knife is. I sharpen my kitchen knifes with a hard elastic wheel an a 6k rpm bench grinder, when I'm done they slice through chicken, fish, meat and veg like it's not even there but I have never once sharpened a knife so that it can cut paper or shave with it... Does this suggest my knifes are not sharp? What is the key to getting a knife to cut paper or shave your arm and is it actually relevant for something like a kitchen or filleting knife? Thanks.

+Ashley Webb It doesn't mean your knives aren't sharp, it could just mean that the angle you ground in wasn't as sharp. Widening the primary edges bevel makes the dg sturdier, but doesn't quite have the same cutting capacity. A blade sharp enough to shave with (steel notwithstanding) will dull faster than the knives you sharpen at home. Beefier the edge, the more abuse it can take, but you sacrifice the cleaner slices. Hope I answered your question. :)

I've been wanting to successfully do this for years, and I have gotten good at getting a razors edge on my knife, cutting hair off my arms or legs without any effort or even lubrication... But god damn, as soon as I begin with my facial hair it wants to tug and bite and just ingeneral turn into a foolhardy endeavour and I cant for the life of my figure out if Im just being a giant pussy or if there is some basic technique I havent learned, or somehow improve my knifes even further. I might just givein and get an actual barbers razor, so I know for sure that its not my blades lol. one of these fucking days I will figure this out and finally become a man.

I dont know. Maybe not the knife in and of itself but he did very little face prep and he seems to be pressing so hard. it looks almost as if he is pulling the hairs out. I agree multiblade razors are shit. I personally use a Merkur DE razor and am considering giving the old cut throat ones a try.

If you make knifes.. Why stick shaving with a straight razor?? Awesome.. Maybe its the amazing crafted knife your using.. Because i use your sharpening techniques and I shave decently good.. All my knifes shave to some degree.. But I shave with a straight razor, because i cant get my others knifes as sharp.. Thats the main reason I feel needed to own a Carter neck knife.
