I'm not sure if this shaving soap artisan is still in business but when he made his soaps most people considered it to be one of the top artisan's products on the market. I was trying to narrow down what I was going to use and opened the lid and once I caught the scent (lemons) I was hooked.
Shaver Heaven was an Australian artisan shaving soap company that gained a loyal following in the wet shaving community for its high-quality, handcrafted soaps. Known for its rich, slick lather and thoughtfully crafted scents, Shaver Heaven developed a strong reputation among traditional wet shavers.
The company was founded by Anthony Macri and operated for a few years before closing down. Despite its relatively short time in the market, Shaver Heaven left a lasting impression, with many enthusiasts still reminiscing about their favorite scents and the performance of the soaps. Some of the brand’s most beloved scents included Divine, Fresh, and Forbidden Forest.
Though Shaver Heaven is no longer in production, its legacy remains a well-regarded name in the artisan shaving world. Collectors and fans occasionally seek out remaining tubs of Shaver Heaven soaps, keeping their reputation alive in the wet shaving community.
On Netflix this week I watched two movies "Saturday Night" is a 2024 film directed by Jason Reitman that dramatizes the frantic preparations leading up to the inaugural episode of "Saturday Night Live" (SNL) on October 11, 1975. The narrative unfolds in real-time, capturing the chaos and creative tensions behind the scenes as producer Lorne Michaels, portrayed by Gabriel LaBelle, strives to bring his revolutionary vision to life. The ensemble cast features portrayals of iconic figures such as Chevy Chase, John Belushi, Gilda Radner, and host George Carlin. While the film takes creative liberties, it offers an engaging glimpse into the birth of a television phenomenon. "Saturday Night" is currently available for streaming on Netflix.
The second movie Awakenings (1990), directed by Penny Marshall, is a drama based on the true story of Dr. Oliver Sacks, adapted from his 1973 memoir of the same name. The film stars Robin Williams as Dr. Malcolm Sayer (a fictionalized version of Sacks) and Robert De Niro as Leonard Lowe, one of his patients.
Set in the late 1960s, the story follows Dr. Sayer, a shy and dedicated neurologist working at a hospital where patients with a mysterious sleeping sickness (encephalitis lethargica) have been catatonic for decades. He begins experimenting with a new drug, L-Dopa, and miraculously awakens several patients, including Leonard. As they experience life again for the first time in years, they struggle with adjusting to the modern world and the fleeting nature of their recovery.
The film is an emotional exploration of hope, the fragility of life, and the power of human connection. It received critical acclaim, with Robert De Niro earning an Academy Award nomination for Best Actor.
