The wrestling aspect of his game, just isn't strong enough to beat Belal. He does have good cardio, but the fight was slow paced. Belal could exhaust him in the later rounds.

Most people fail to realize Belal didn't completely dominate Leon. He just did better for more duration during most rds than Leon. Belal did well in the 1st 3 mins of every rd except rd 3 and Leon did well the last 1:50 mins of every rd. Leon able to reverse Belal in every single rd and in rd 3 when Leon took the back of Belal he couldn't able to escape the position. Belal was doing well in the 1st 3 mins of most rds, but then got slowed down and couldn't maintain the same level of activity in the last 1:50 mins of most rds. And I personally think that was due to his age. Shavkat most likely beat him because of his youth factor imo.

Every single round after belal took down he got reversed CONSISTENTLY, leon had 2 minutes of control in round 2 and 4, he took Belal's back in round 3 himself, if he landed the elbows on belal in round 2 and 4, he would've won every round from 2-5, it's his lack of fight IQ and his corner's incompetence which cost him the fight. Because we saw what happened when leon reversed belal in round 5 and unloaded elbows, he opened belal up. As someone that thought Belal would run through Leon (feel free to search my name in Weasle's comments for proof), I always was more cautious with predicting how Belal will fair against Shavkat. Yes, Belal has better offensive wrestling than Shavkat, and likely will take down Shavvkvat multiple times throughout the fight, however I predict two things about Shavvkat that are going to frustrate Belal more than any other opponent. One, Shavkat has a strong enough wrestling base that will cost Belal more energy than taking down than any welterweight opponent (besides a Khamzat, Usman in his prime, and possibly Colby in his prime). This may allow Shavkat to land damaging shots when Belal reluctantly has to disengage. Two, Shavkat is incredibly active with his grappling, and won't likely accept a submissive grappling position without a fight, meaning Belal may not land a whole lot of damaging shots while on top. Do I predict Belal to UD Shavkat? I do, but there's no way this isn't a close fight, and there's no way Shavvkat doesn't get his own momentum going during the fight. Belal's hardest fight to date.

I think the assumption he can’t improve is false. Now I also think the assumption he will definitely improve is also not guaranteed because he had all the time in the world to do so and has shown little improvement in his Striking defense and takedowns. I think it’s somewhere in the middle, he can improve, he will improve but not as fast or easy as expected and he might take a loss before he does. If he does improve he can be a dominant champion, if he doesn’t he will never be a dominant champion. Right now he is not there, doesn’t mean he won’t ever.

Leon reversed belal consistently every round in their fight, shavkat needs just one reversal from there. @Slim-Clips

@ I agree Shavkat will just land too much and too hard on him in the pocket for Belal to win. I just think Belal could jab his way in to secure takedowns, and I think he would top game Shavkat based on what I’ve seen. Edwards is a much better defensive grappler than Shavkat. Shavkat’s clinch game is good but he’s reliant on over-unders and uses them to secure bodylocks, throws, trips, etc. He’s not actually good at shooting takedowns. His over-under clinch game doesn’t work as well against lanky fighters like Garry. I do agree Shavkat will probably beat Belal though, and I’m hoping he does.

Videos like these make zero sense, when a fighter that is completely different from the champions style has a tough fight but still wins, everyone wants to hop off the hype train, he struggled to take down Ian Garry which now means belal is going to ragdoll him ? Styles makes match ups and just because you struggle with one doesn’t mean your going to struggle with another fighter, especially when they have two different styles
@TheWeasleMMA
@TheWeasleMMA 2 күн бұрын
@John-i1e7p That's why Belal would most likely win, styles make fights. Ian Garry is not the wrestler Belal is, especially without a full training camp. Shavkat was training for a wrestle-heavy opponent and still barely got any takedowns and was reversed and taken down himself in the 5th round. It's logical to think that Belal would do better at that as that is his best skill.
@John-i1e7p

@TheWeasleMMA who cares about wrestling offensively, if Shavkat watches any film he would notice belal is basically impossible to take down, if I’m Shavkat I wouldn’t even attempt a take down, I would just focus on not getting taken down, belal stand up is terrible, he is shorter in stature which makes him vulnerable to Shavkats knees which if you saw the Geoff Neal fight are brutal, belal does not have any where near the footwork of a guy like Ian Garry to maintain distance he is going to be pressuring Shavkat and Shavkat has legit power while belal has none, if Shavkat just takes away belals takedown and forces him on the feet he’s going beat up on belal.

@TheWeasleMMA 2 күн бұрын
@John-i1e7p He could. Belal does seem a lot stronger than before. I think there could be a physical strength advantage for Belal as well. The cardio aspect is another question too. @John-i1e7p
@John-i1e7p 2 күн бұрын
@@TheWeasleMMA could it not be because Ian Garry footwork was a lot better and was maintaining distance better which slowed down the fight , the scenario will not be the same facing belal who likes to throw a bunch of punches in your face with zero footwork just to get a takedown, I think that makes him vulnerable for counters and knees. And the fact that he seems stronger is irrelevant, because shavkat definitely seems stronger than Leon Edwards, and Leon had moments of success on the ground . belal is a decision machine and shavkat is one of the best finishers in the sport, if he gets even two minutes on the feet per round with belal I would not be surprised if he smokes him with a counter shot.

There’s too many moments against Thompson and Garry where he’s idle in the middle not getting anything done on the feet especially against Garry where he occasionally landed a right hand or threw a wheel kick. I look to those moments and I compare them to someone like Belal where there’s never a idle moment in his fights he’s always pressing hard using his boxing to engage in the clinch or just shoot and that pressure would definitely fold Shavkat. JDM as of now is the strongest contender imo based on his game but we still need 1 more fight from him against a usman or anyone atp.
