Behind the Name of the holiday: Shavuot - Weeks & Oaths
Shavuot (Shavuos) means weeks, and refers to the Biblical Holiday celebrated this week on the 6th & 7th of Sivan, marking the anniversary of the giving of the Torah at Sinai. It celebrates the completion of the seven-week Omer counting period which began on the second day of Passover, where each day we work on refining another one of our character traits.
Shavuot also means oaths. The Talmud tells us that all souls, including those of future generations, were at Sinai, and we each took an oath to keep the Torah dear and follow it's precepts. In fact the Talmud tells us that before we are born, our souls take an oath similar to the one made at Sinai - To uphold the Torah and its Mitzvahs.
So this Shavuot, as we listen to the Ten Commandments read from the Torah, and renew our vows, let's recommit to holding the Torah closer and more dear to our hearts. Let's do its Mitzvahs with our re-refined character, in the best of health, filled with happiness, nachat, prosperity, success and an abundance of all good things!
