This song helped me through one of the toughest times of my life. I lost my daughter, my marriage fell apart, my wife divorced me, the relationship with my living daughter has changed, I was homeless. But this song, the Shawn James version, really helped me. I’ve not only listened but sang this song so many times there’s no way to count. God and this song kept me going! Thank you Shawn James for giving this song some soul! It’s what I needed.

I used to listen to that when I was studying to join the army. Depressed, weak, addicted, unemployed, without any achievements in life and with many problems in family and in myself. But always with a small flame of hope deep in the heart, which never went out, even without making any heat. This song made me look at all that degrading situation and laugh. Laughing because somehow everything would pass, that gave me that certainty. Today there are 5 months left for me to graduate as a sergeant. Many personal achievements. Pride and personal dignity recovered. Excited about everything I can still do in life and certain that I will achieve. Out of the darkness and away from pessimism. It's worth believing. It's worth getting out of the ground up and taking the first step towards something good.

I mean the closing line is basically "if things don't get better in the next year or so I'm gonna curl up and die" the whole point of the song (again imo) is that the world is a harsh and unforgiving place, and there's no guarantee at all that things will work out. The important thing is to "pick (your)self up and get back in the race" because doing so is in itself fulfilling regardless of the outcome. This is gonna be long but the whole song reminds me of Teddy Roosevelt's famous "arena" quote: "It is not the critic who counts; not the man who points out how the strong man stumbles, or where the doer of deeds could have done them better. The credit belongs to the man who is actually in the arena, whose face is marred by dust and sweat and blood; who strives valiantly; who errs, who comes short again and again, because there is no effort without error and shortcoming; but who does actually strive to do the deeds; who knows great enthusiasms, the great devotions; who spends himself in a worthy cause; who at the best knows in the end the triumph of high achievement, and who at the worst, if he fails, at least fails while daring greatly, so that his place shall never be with those cold and timid souls who neither know victory nor defeat.”

I've come so far since I first found this; I was borderline insane, couldn't have been in a worse place physically, mentally, and spritually. Now I've got a decent job, learning a skill, and a growing music career, and I feel more stable than ever. This song still applies though; I've had some of my most serene moments in the midst of my worst turmoils with no money at all. Like so many others I discovered your music thanks to " The Last of Us 2" and since that day I'm an absolute fan. There's not a day I don't listen to your songs, they've put a big smile on my face, brought me to tears and most of all gave me something to hang on to in my darkest hours and gave me some emotions when I couldn't feel them myself. And even if you'll probably never see this comment I just wanted to thank you from the bottom of my heart for all those wonderful hours listening to your songs, and for more than probably saving my life... Coming back to this song: in the middle of a quarantine, got fired 2 weeks ago, and my dog who's been my best friend for 15 years had her last day today. "Riding high in April, shot down in May." It definitely resonates. Stay positive guys, That's Life.

From experience....... it can always get worse and sometimes it does but you get back up and walk forward. Never stay in the same place. Ive been there... a few times but im stronger now than ever
