One of our favourite guitarists drops in for spectacular tones and life-affirming guitar chat
Life too short for long KZbin videos? Please see the ‘Interesting bits and go-to sections’ information below.
Welcome to the show! We are delighted to welcome Nashville-based guitarist Shawn Tubbs to the show! Shawn was in the UK with Revv Amplification in September 2022 so we jumped at the opportunity of a visit.
In this video Shawn explains the basics of his tone and shares some insight into his unique style. It’s also early days for Shawn’s new pedalboard so naturally, we take a good look at that too!
Please check out Shawn’s channel on the ‘toob! / shawntubbs
Enjoy the show!

SCAM ALERT! Hello to everyone watching this. Please note we will NEVER promote competitions or prizes in KZbin comments sections. There are parties pretending to be us. So if ANYONE asks you to contact them saying you’ve won a prize and asks for details, please ignore them. Better still, please help us report them to KZbin. You have not won a prize, and it is not us. It’s happening right across KZbin, with collective apologies!

Shawn Tubbs is genuinely the nicest people (ive ever heckled on KZbin). I posted a comment that was a bit negative about a pedal he was demoing. His response in dealing with my negativity was SO well handled that i immediately re-commented calling him perhaps the nicest person on KZbin....lifted my mood immediately. Super nice guy......

I have to admit I'd not heard of Shawn before this video, so thanks to Dan and Mick for bringing him in. I'm immediately a fan, Shawn is just so generous, gracious, cool-headed, such a gentleman, and just watching the video I feel like my own playing has already changed in my head, just that change of perspective from contact with an enlightened mind. He mentions some of my guitar heroes but mentioned a few I hadn't heard of that I now need to dig into. My first thought was woodshed but my second thought was to play with other people, stay connected. "Feet to the fire" indeed. Huge thanks to all!

I can only echo what has already said about Shawn by so many others. He is a humble and exceptional guitar player and a great human being! I had the privilege of meeting him in person at Sweetwater Gear Fest a few times back when that was a thing. He's the same to a single wanna-be guitar player at a Revv booth as he is on KZbin! The world is a better place with him in it. I wish him success in where-ever his journey leads.

What a spectacular episode this is - well done TPS. Shawn’s playing and approach just grabs my ear every time (not to mention what a decent human he appears to be along with it). I will also admit every time i watch him on an HSS type guitar i then look at my various SSS guitars and they just know one of them is going to get a humbucker at some point. Mick you definitely need to float the trem on at least one of your strats too, i had mine all locked down and blocked up for decades until i was listening to Jeff Beck (if i recall correctly) and just had to give it a try on one of mine again.

If this episode was a pedal it would be the Memory Men. Completely unforgettable. The delight and disbelief on Mick and Dan's faces is like family watching kids light up with the best surprise or present ever. The mutual respect was obvious and should be a reminder not to sell TPS and your gifts short to many who are in awe of what your wisdom, playing, constant growth, inspiration and especially your humour that always makes each episode memorable. Shawn's playing is other worldly and he is so grounded, open and comes across as a really great guy. You so often mention the honour of having guests in the room and will have memories stored to treasure through the years. The fact that you share these moments make the pleasure and privilege available to all to watch over and over. Magic. Much Gratitude Gents.

the talk about playing outside the key/scale/chords of a song was SO fascinating. As one of those odd people who know more about music theory than guitar playing, I found it rather enlightening to hear Shawn make the point that listening to it slow can be excruciating. Because he's absolutely right! When you go and slow down those jaw dropping licks that you heard off some record before you knew how to play it (the eye opening moment for me was that first guitar solo in Rosanna), you have that moment of like..."wait, these are just wrong notes? You can do that?" And I think that's one of the most valuable things you can hear, especially for guitar where fretboard patterns can feel so all-encompassing to new players.

As someone who went to Musicians Institute, I can affirm Shawn’s comments. I liken it to high school: it doesn’t actually help to prepare you for the real world, rather it puts you in an environment to learn to socialize. The personal connections made at my time there are exponentially more valuable than the theory and techniques I’ve learned.

The great thing about TPS (and Shawn in this case) is that if I have questions, they're answered by watching the video(s) and I do not have to utter a single word in text. I've heard of Shawn but life happens to where I didn't know anything until this video...and time allotment. My jaw dropped watching this video, not just because of his amazing technique but because his sound is so similar to mine! The two variations of the Tilt are now being thought about heavily by me. Either or will allow me to remove a rare hard to find pedal or two from my board and still retain my sound. The Tilt feature is the standout for me because one of those pedals has a nearly untameable high end (a light overdrive). The other light OD is one that I love that may or may not stay on the board going into one of the Tilt variations...the question answered. As they say, "Decisions Decisions". Thanks to the three of you and I'll report back when I've determined which variation I'm going for. Stephen

Hey Shawn TUBBS, do you remember from a few weeks ago I commented on a “complimant” from a certain guitarist? Larry Carlton.-CRAZY!, Here’s a fresh recap: “Hey man, nice extensions..and I’m not talking about your hairdo’”-L.C. -as he exits the control room. HILARIOUS! If you notice Shawn, I listen with precision and fervently blend your touch into specific songs, -kinda like jamming with you with super rad musicians!, LOL!!!! Anyways, I hear more L.C in you then R.F. -which is a win-win either way!

What an inspiring player and person. Truly great episode. Made me pick up my guitar (cheating a bit at work!) just because ... and that's kind of the best compliment isn't it?

Got goosebumps remembering the good old days when I was in high school in the early 2000’s. Walking on sunset Blvd around guitar center and all the small shops around that carrier really old guitars and amps, and of course, Mesa boogie Hollywood. Those days really shaped my love for guitar and loud amps. I remember playing an old Gibson lp special and a jr and even some custom shop stuff. Those sounds haunt me to this day. I now own a collings 290 and a few nice amps (Carr mercury and dr z z lux). Sometimes when I let them rip in wet dry it takes me back!

The source audio EQ with the G3 is amazing because you can put it where you want in each patch and midi can set the EQ for each patch and placement.
