Their voices were incredible timeless and for years their music will still be played. The sad part and leave it to me to bring this up it was 1955 , times were so different. Im glad over the year things changed. I was 5 years old in 55 and I have to say the music I grew up with was so much better than what we're hearing nowadays

The Platters were a great group with many top 40 hits back in the 50's. Another one of their greatest hits was " The Great Pretender" (1955). "Only You" (1955) which you are reacting to here is just one of their greatest hits. Here are some other hits you need to react too. "Smoke Gets In Your Eyes" (1959) " Twilight Time" (1958) and "My Prayer." All are great hits to react to. You can not go wrong going down the rabbit hole that are "The Platters." Mel... What you just witness was greatness! In an era with no auto tune. Just pure vocal talent...Great reaction as always.

Diversity is a real key word here. In this era music had no boundaries. It was for everyone and we all came together for concerts even in this era of segregation. They passed over into the gay community and although not the first music icons for the gay population; they were the first to reach mega popularity among gays worldwide. They did this while maintaining mainstream popularity. They were just phenomenal in every respect.

As a child of the 1970s (I was between 8 and 18 in that decade), I love Doo Wop music (the popular music style from approximately 1955 to 1962). The 1970s were a decade filled with 1950s nostalgia. We had the movie American Graffiti, and TV shows Happy Days and Laverne and Shirley. My junior high school had 50s days where kids would dress like the 1950s and doo wop music would abound. The Platters were one of the biggest acts of that era. I always had a crush on Zola Taylor, the woman in the group (may she rest in peace). The lead tenor singer was Tony Williams.. They had several big hits, but two that you must check out are "Smoke Gets in Your Eyes" and "The Great Pretender."

The Platters my mom's favorite performers when she was young. That generation did not think the music of the late 60s and 70's was too aggressive. People like my mom feel that todays music is just obscene or the people don't have the talent compared to those performer back then.

Most of the live music from the 50's you watch are from films, hosted by DJ Alan Freed who went from calling the new music "The big beat" to "Rock 'n' Roll. And like Alan Freed said, "Rock 'n' Roll is a river of music merging with many different streams. One of the greatest vocal groups are singing this beautiful ballad, but it's still rock 'n' roll in its own way. The platters also done a rock 'n' roll number called "Roll with me Henry" an Etta James song, that's a cool track too.
