Hay it's the 78 year old grandma, some of you all are here today because your grandparents, or parents fell in love slow dancing to this kind of music back in the day. I was there to experience it all through out the years, and feel so privileged to have been there for it all. There is no music to compare to the greats of the 50's and 60's.

I was so, so very fortunate. I discovered the power of music about the time I hit 6th grade. That was the sixties. I grew up down the road from Detroit so Motown songs flooded the airwaves right along with Elvis, the Righteous Brothers, country, rock-a-billy, to rock and roll, and soul music. I learned to love and appreciate it all. Hearing these "oldies" makes my soul smile

But one that seems to have gone under the radar is a personal favorite of mine is When the Swallows Come back to Capistrano. The lead singer had a gentle quality tone to his voice which is easy on the ear which made them so good. They were before my time but as a music historian I'm familiar with all decades. If U are not aware of RUTH ETTING can I suggest U listen to SHINE ON HARVEST MOON 1931, she had a wonderful tone & way with a song. Also try one of the cutest voice & songs iv'e ever heard, try THATS MY WEAKNESS NOW by HELEN KANE 1928.Dont be put off by the year, many old songs have been cleaned up & sound better than when they were 1st recorded. All the best & I wish U well.

Back to the 1950s and 1960s different time and different place, much simpler time, a much more innocent time. School "sock hops" so called because they were held in the schools gym and you had to take your shoes off (so not to harm the floor). The music switched back and forth between rock and roll and slow music. Slow dancing an acceptable way to hold your girl close. I am in my 70s and this type of music take me back to win I was 16.

I'm 80 years old and you are the first of your generation who "get it"! While Rap is considered music, you have discovered and share the reality of genuine music......melody, harmony and orchestration. I was in 9th grade in 1957 and remember when "Little Darlin" first came out. It was the first record in the 45 RPM format and we could buy it for one dollar. My life changed and to this day I still play that song often. You have opened the lid of the music treasure-trove of 50s and 60s music. Now try discovering some of the singers from the Big Band era that had hits in the 50s. "Moonlight Gambler" by Frankie Laine or Vic Damone's "On The Street Where You Live". Also there were the groups: The Four Lads, The Lettermen, The Four Freshmen, The Four Preps, or Shirley Bassey to name a few. You will find many hours of delightful sounds. I'll be tuned in!

This was the mid-50's where music was transitioning from Big Band and Swing thru folk/pop with smaller groups like the Platters and into the beginnings of 'Rock & Roll' which got cranked up just a few years later in the late 50's. And yes, Mel there was no electronic enhancement at all back then. It was all voices. The only thing electronic at that time were the guitars , and they were still fairly new. I'm really looking forward to when you two get into the 'Folk' and 'Folk/Rock' genres. I think you'll enjoy those too. Top 6 groups for that music was The Brothers Four, The Highwaymen, The Irish Rovers, Simon and Garfunkel, and last but probably the best - Peter, Paul and Mary and the Mamas and the Papas. They cover the genre from the mid-50's thru the 60s and into the 70's. You both Take Care.

@jimchape I'm assuming you're Caucasion Jim...I'm 85 years old, Ex- Night Club singer...in the 50's, 60's and 70's... Our people, unless they were musicians, or singers, never heard of these people. I grew up singing... Gospel, Rhythm and Blues, Ballads, Standards, and Jazz. I met some, and knew some of the enterta- iners back then, Sam Cooke, Johnny Taylor...(there were 2 Johnny Taylors, most didn't know that... they sounded a little alike, they call One ''Little Johnnie Taylor'')~Sarah Vaughn, Smokey Robinson, Johnny Mathis, opened for the Ike and Tina Turner Review, 1968, ''HOLLYWOOD''.. Ray Charles, etc:.. We had so many wonderful Groups then, forging their Ways to the World. We were simple people, and the world was a happier place. We lived in ''WATTS''...California!~

The operatic voice you're hearing is that of Tony Williams, lead singer of The Platters from 1953 - 1960. The group had 40 charting singles on the Billboard Hot 100 chart between 1955 and 1967, including four number-one hits. The Platters were one of the first African-American groups to be accepted as a major chart group and were, for a period of time, the most successful vocal group in the world, selling millions of albums and singles in the U.S. and other countries.
