Guy's, this was the Doobie's first top 40 song. The group did a tremendous amount of touring over the years, and it took a toll of Tom Johnston's voice and overall health. He had to kinda "drop out" at a certain period, and Michael McDonald stepped in and started singing lead on many songs thereafter

*Yes...Tom Johnston was the lead singer, he left in 1975, and then Michael McDonald came in. I preferred the Tom Johnston era Doobie Bros. Although McDonald was an amazing singer...it just didn't work for me. Some Johnston era songs to try are; China Grove__Black Water__Long Train Runnin'__Jesus is Just Alright*

Saw them live on China Grove and takin it to the streets. I too love McDonald, but I definitely prefer pre Michael Doobies. Seems like the producers wanted to push McDonald's voice over the music. Long train, blackwater, this tune...were music and vox...

In the OG version (the best version IMO) of the band, Tom Johnston did most of the lead singing, although guitarist Pat Simmons also sang lead on some songs (like Black Water, their best song IMO). Johnston became ill and was replaced with Michael McDonald, who introduced a different style to the band. Johnston eventually recovered and rejoined the band, with McDonald remaining, as well.
@2olvets443
@2olvets443 2 жыл бұрын
McDonald left when Pat Simmons left and Tom was already gone. McDonald was not there at anytime Tom was there. Pat Simmons you berate stating guitarist as he wrote or co-wrote much of the Doobie music. I think Pat left because of McDonald, just didn't say so. While I like Michael McDonald I did not like what he did as a Doobie, it just was not the Doobie sound. It was McDonalds music not Pat, Tom, or Johns.

@@2olvets443 I just caught their 50th anniversary tour and they have all been playing together on it. It was a fantastic show. Pat was THE mainstay of the band all through the years. Michael is a very humble person and has always honored Tom. You see it in the shows together.
@2olvets443
@2olvets443 2 жыл бұрын
@@TheDivayenta Don't get me wrong I really like McDonald, just not as a Doobie. I think his voice is like no other and his writing talent just pure amazing. The entire style was changed while he was a Doobie and yes there was good music from that, it was not the Doobies style and just not the Doobies period. It was more Michael McDonald with Pat Simmons of the Doobies.

They had so many great songs such as "What A Fool Believes", "Listen To The Music", "Jesus Is Just Alright", "Long Train Runnin'", "China Grove", "Black Water", "Takin' It To The Streets", "The Doctor", "It Keeps You Runnin'", "Echoes Of Love", "You Belong To Me", "Take Me In Your Arms" etc.

The original incarnation of The Doobie Brothers was lead singer Tom Johnston (singing their 1972 hit "Listen to The Music" here), Patrick Simmons, Dave Shogren, and John Hartman. Their hits include "Long Train Running", "China Grove", "Jesus Is Just Alright", "Black Water", "South City Midnight Lady", "Rockin' Down the Highway", "Take Me In Your Arms (Rock Me A Little While)", "Another Park, Another Sunday". Michael McDonald joined the band in 1975 and their hits with him were "Takin' It to the Streets", "It Keeps You Running", and "What a Fool Believes".

Michael McDonald joined the already successful Doobie Brothers around 1975. He changed their sound from a Rock sound to more of a jazzy blue-eyed Soul sound and had even more success which peaked with the "Minute By Minute" album in 1978-79. They split up in 1982 when McDonald went solo. The pre-McDonald Doobies reformed in 1989 and had success with an album called "Cycles" and the hit song "Doctor". This song was from 1972. Did you get that? Complicated, I know.
