THE LEAD singer is Tom Johnston and he wrote this song. The other classic that he wrote is LONG TRAIN RUNNING. Tom took some time off from the band and Michael took over the reins. Michael left and Tom returned and they are still performing. Another of their songs (they did it in a Midnight special) is JESUS IS JUST ALRIGHT.

And now, they are both (Tom and Michael) back with the group and performing, sadly Covid prevented them from touring last year, but they have dates scheduled again now. Here's a video they just released a few days ago on their official site, performing Takin' It To The Streets. kzbin.info/www/bejne/jHecgJ-plt5moJI

I have been requesting Jesus is Just Alright on many reaction channels, but so far there have been no takers. I wonder if they resist choosing that song because it has "Jesus" in the title. I hope Harri will choose it! It's such a cool song!

Early Doobie Brothers: three guitarists, bass, and two drummers. Wicked grooves. Try "China Grove" and "Long Train Running" for rockers, or "South City Midnight Lady" for a very pretty tune.

So maybe they just recorded the video later on. Anyway, he is releasing his First solo album this month, that’s why he is on my mind. 😁✌️

The guitarist in black is Jeff "Skunk" Baxter, who was in Steely Dan for their first 3 albums. I was lucky enough to be introduced to him by a friend and talked to him for a couple hours at a club. He came with Defense Secretary Cohen and Nils Lofgren. Skunk is now a civilian missile expert (which is why he knew the Secretary of Defense). They were there to see my friend on stage, and plan a USO tour.

You've now reacted to two great songs from the pre-McDonald era. The Doobies had a huge career before Michael joined the band. "China Grove" and "Long Train Running" are another two of those great songs. If you want to hear their Grammy winning song, with Michael as their singer, react to "What A Fool Believes." Having the blessing of seeing and hearing the Doobie Bros. two times in the very early years, with Tom Johnston as lead vocalist, was truly a lifetime highlight and great memory. At the time my comment was ‘they’re a better studio band, than a live band’, but watching this video shows that perhaps I caught them on a few bad nights. Regardless, I’ve been a Doobie fan since their very beginning! Such great memories and such great music. I agree with your comments about the band members...all Hall of Fame members, and justifiably so! Great reaction Harri, you’re the reason for the season...of great music!

Harri, the Doobie Brothers were one of _the greatest_ rock bands of the 1970s! Finally, after selling many, many millions of records over a 50 year period the RRHoF inducted them last year. It is a disgrace it took the RRHoF so long to do it. They are one of the truly great rhythm rock and roll bands ever, and they often have absolutely scorching lead electric guitars solos! Tom Johnston was their original lead singer with Patrick Simmons assuming responsibilities from time to time. Both would switch from lead to rhythm guitar as the occasion required. Tiran Porter was their original bassist and he was wonderful! You have just scratched the surface of their best era, their 2nd through 5th albums. Their musicianship is legendary and they would often share studio musicians like guitar great Jeff "Skunk" Baxter with Steely Dan. Most people who were fans of the original Doobie Brothers were not at all happy that Michael McDonald took over lead vocals from Tom Johnston. But Tom grew a terrible ulcer from not eating properly (and perhaps other things) and he had to leave the band after their fifth album "Stampede" in 1976. Eventually he returned and McDonald left but they have seldom scaled the heights of excellence they had in the early to mid 1970s when Ted Templeman was their producer. They are still touring to this day and their catalogue of hits is immense! If I might suggest one of their best songs, and my personal favourite, react to "Dark Eyed Cajun Woman." It is the most hauntingly beautiful blues based love song they ever did, and the electric blues lead guitar is to die for! I'm not kidding and I hope you take me seriously and do it! There is no good concert footage of them playing it, but the single is superb and the blues lead guitar is achingly beautiful! 🎸🎸🎸 Here is the link to it: kzbin.info/www/bejne/aZ-vg4Bja8yDm80

When asked during an interview, Patrick Simmons said this song has sort of become their anthem. Tom Johnston pretty much concurred. Tom said something to the effect that he wrote it with the idea that listening to music makes people feel good and brings them together! He hit the nail on the head with this one. One of my favorite Doobie Brothers songs. This is from the "Toulouse Street" album. Lots of great songs on that one! "Jesus Is Just Alright", Rockin' Down The Highway", Cotton Mouth"...

Hey Hari..... This performance was all "Lip Sink" to the studio cut (a common practice in the 70's). So..... the acoustic you heard is in there along with countless other instruments. All in all the Doobie Brothers wrote a lot of great material before and after Mike McDonald. They were great artists and they owned the radio waves in the 70's!

You are forgetting a couple of details....Doobie brothers was the first group that recorded and played live with 2 (Drums) drummers and you should see how they coordinate and also uncoordinate on purpose sometimes, also deserves a LOT of praise is the engineer Donn Landee, who created a spectacular 3D Stereo perception, it was one of the first recordings where it was possible to feel one guitar in the left, the other in the right, Bass center left and so on. THE BEST OF THE BEST.

I can see the Isley Brothers being an influence on the members of the Doobie Brothers, but “Listen to the Music” is an original feel-good song written in ‘71 by Tom Johnston for the Doobies 2nd album. As you likely read in comments, this was years before McDonald joined the group, and although I appreciate Michael McDonald’s contribution, I tend to enjoy the Pre-Michael Doobies, but both are important, quality rendition of this landmark American band. Yes the Isley Brothers did a cover of this a year or two after The Doobies release in ‘72, so that may be why it’s familiar. Please check out “Long Train Running”, “China Grove”, and “Rockin’ Down the Highway” since you dig this vibe. Some of the best chill music to enjoy on road trips and sing along! 👍🏻

After more than 50 years, they perform this song as an encore for their concerts and it sounds great! They also did a live remote collaboration during Covid, which was cool. (You can see it on KZbin.) But my favorite treatment of this song was done by the "Playing for Change" channel, which features three of the original Doobies (including Tom Johnston, the composer), plus some 30 musicians from 12 countries and 5 continents. Many of these musicians play their native instruments. This is absolutely spectacular!

Hi Harri, there was an acoustic guitar in this song. If you’ll notice the guitars were not plugged into amps. They were singing over a backing track, the drummer is barely drumming. This is my all time favorite happy song. The Doobie Brothers sound better live. They are older, but you need to check out one of their songs from their Rocking Down the Highway: The Wildlife Concert, any song you choose will be a GREAT one, promise. Harri, thanks for your reactions, especially The Beatles. Janet from Louisiana. ☮️🖤🤟

Fun fact, when they first signed with a record label they were told to listen to the radio hear what people wanted...so they came up with "Listen To The Music", which was their first hit. Michael's big hit with them was "What A Fool Believes".

71 bands (i didn't read the whole list) performed this song. Doobies wrote it so there are 70 covers including the Isley Bros. I was surprised to see Sonny and Cher on the list. I just typed "who covered listen to the music "in Google.
