IMHO The song is about divorce and freeing himself up from the guilt of a failed marriage to go on with his life. He says that "...I know it's a shame, but I'm giving you back your name..." and " ...I've run away the blues, I'm tired of being used, I want everyone to know Im looking for a good time..."

The Commodores most successful period was in the late 1970s and early 1980s when Lionel Richie was the co-lead singer. The band's biggest hit singles are "Easy", "Three Times A Lady", "Sweet Love", "Just To Be Close To You", "Still", "Oh No", "Lady (You Bring Me Up)", "Nightshift", "Brick House", "Fancy Dancer", "Lady (You Bring Me Up)", "Too Hot ta Trot" etc. Lionel Ritchie went on to have a big solo career.

The crazy thing about this track is, its so frickin' smooth you overlook the fact the lyrics tell the story of a dude who's back on the market after saying 'FU'(Sail On) to a chick who really wasn't digging him even though he tried to love her. Much respect to the original lineup of the Commodores.

Not only were they good they had their records they produced but their concerts in person or off the charts

In 1978 I was able to see the Commodores live at the Forum in LA. We had seats way up high in the auditorium, but it was truly one of the best concerts I have ever seen. They were so talented. Song after song, the audience didn't want it to end. They kept coming back for encores, people were stomping their feet, clapping their hands, felt like the whole building shook. There was this beautiful feeling and everyone was chill and having a great time. When they sang this song you could have heard a pin drop it was mesmerizing. I will never forget it and so glad I got to go. I am so happy you are doing more Commodores! Yay! :)

The Commodores ruled the 70s. The (AM) radio station I listened to back then (before FM came on the scene) played a variety of rock, funk, and soul music. That's where I developed my love for funk/rock fusion. "Too Hot to Trot" is one of their more "rockin" songs, and "Easy" is arguably the most beautiful song ever written. ps. cool trivia...his Aunt was my biology teacher in high school.

I was 16, working the “shoestring” French fry stand at the Ohio State Fair and these guys came. Our fry-stand was directly beside the grandstand and they blew the roof off! This became my favorite make-out song that entire year. You know-parking the car by the river at Como park with my girl, working on some “night moves!” Wait. That’s a different song. Oh well. Shawn and Mel, so glad you reacted to the Commodores. Really enjoyed your reaction and comments. Guys, I went to college with them and it was nothing to see them on the yard or in the cafeteria. They were the house band at the Elks club on Friday nights. My wife is from Tuskegee and grew up with Lionel and Ronald LaPread the base guitarist. Lived in Tuskegee after college and got to know them. My wife and I would play tennis with Thomas McClary and his wife. Such a great time back then. Many have already recommended other songs by them and it's a rabbit hole you'll love. Love you guys. Have a great weekend!
