The year was 1959 - it was the height of doo-wop group pop music. Living in or around Pittsburgh PA we heard the beautiful voice of Jimmy Beaumont of The Skyliners singing "Since I Don't Have You". And there were great background harmonies and the soaring soprano climax featuring Janet Vogel. This song is seared into our memories and our hearts.
@rexyoshimoto42782 жыл бұрын
You're right. '59 was a crazy good year. I remember "Poison Ivy" by the Coasters came out that year, too. Acapella stuff was great. "Since I Don't Have You" reminds me of "Lovers Island" by the Blue Jays (1961) Or "The Closer You Are" by the Channels (1956). Street corner stuff. Sad that the music industry kept lookin' for the 'new song' and the 'new beat' barely gave air play after two songs sound alike. It's cool I can type them into KZbin and hear them once again. Did you ever hear "Paradise" by the Temptations (1962)?
@feathersandspikes21662 жыл бұрын
Janet Vogel replaced my mom, Barbara Volbrecht when the band split from the original members. On the single (45 rpm record) they put "Since I Don't Have You" and "Pennies From Heaven" on the flip side. Both were hits and the band broke up after that. The original drummer and back up singer (mom) left the group.

Lead singer is Jimmy Beaumont, along with Johnny Maestro of the Crests is the stand out male vocalist of the 50's, was still singing in his 70's too. Janet Vogel was female singer, and she was absolutely outstanding too. The falsetto at the end is all her.

Janet Vogel was hitting those high "you's" at the end. Since I Don't Have You was recorded in 1958 and released in 1959. Janet was born in 1941 meaning she would have been around 16 when she sang on this song! Tragically Janet Vogel died of carbon monoxide poisoning in 1980. She was only 37 and left behind 3 children.

Those words were written by Joe Rock, the Skyliners manager (all from Pittsburgh Pa.) after his true love left him amd moved to another state. He wrote the words on a piece of paper as he was stopped at a traffic light one night. He had the Skyliners record it as this song arrangement in Pittsburgh. Jimmy Beaumont sang lead and the female singer Janet Vogel sang the high part at the end. Joe Rock also managed a white soul singer named Johnny Daye on STAX records who substitued for Wilson Pickett at a concert in Pittsburgh and toured with' Otis Redding and was with Otis the night he died in the plane crash. In fact, Johnny Daye was offered a ride on that plane by Otis that night. I played bass for J.Daye in 1968 when he had out the record "Stay Baby Stay" on STAX. Joe also wrote a song for Otis Redding that is on one of Otis's albums. Rock also managed another Pittsburgh white soul group called "The Jaggerz" They were also truly "Blue Eyed Soul" on most of their recordings the first o\in 1968 on "Gamble" records (in Philly) but were known mainly for their commercial "Pop" hit called "The Rapper" which really does not show their real talent singing white soul music. Soul music both black and white and Doo Wop was big in Pittsburgh as were the artists who did those songs. The Doo Wop PBS shows around year 2000 were made in Pittsburgh.

The expressions from both of you are priceless. I saw Jimmy Beaumont and the Skyliners live at many of the Pittsburgh Clubs over the years. Jimmy passed away a couple of years ago. Up until his death his beautiful voice was still strong . I truly thank you guys for keeping Doo Wop and the magical sounds of the 50’s alive I would love to hear both of you react to “ Rythm of the Rain “ by the Cascades. Very popular song back in 1961. Much success and God Bless you both.

I was in the 7th grade and if it rained we were directed to the auditorium to dance. Man, how I prayed for rain - I knew I would get to hold my favorite young lady and sneak a kiss. We were so innocent and just being close enough to hold and feel a young lady's soft and warm cheek was just too much. Young guys learn to appreciate the smallest jester of affection from these early female encounters - it just stays with you as an adult. You learn
