I have native American on both sides of my family, but I'm a descendant of Isaac Knight on my mom's side. There's a story in our family about after he was captured and lived among the tribes of Southern Indiana (I'm not sure which one) he took himself a wife from among them and that's where the native American blood on my mom's side comes from. While the tribes in the area were many (Wea, Kickapoo, and Miami just to name a few) I believe the language spoken in that area would've been Shawnee, so I'm gonna try and learn it

I wouldn't mind trying to learn some of this, but the way it's been written vs how it's pronounced is making my brain short circuit. Lol. I'll have to keep trying. I see there's a bit of Iroquois influence with niyaweh being the word for thank you. I wasn't expecting that, but I guess that influence explains why many of their songs on KZbin are of Iroquois origin. Shawnee were such an odd people, even in terms of other Natives. Got to wonder just how many cultures were blended in with them to create this language & culture.

They took the children from their native Shawnee families and returned them to Ohio to be raised as white never to know their true heritage. I'm one of them. Now my tribe don't recognize me and I've never been reunited with my native family. They live over in the next county Perry County, Ohio and I've seen them. They've tried for years to get me back but have had to put up with beatings and threats on their lives all the while. I was beaten to forget I ever knew I was native and as an adult the memories returned. My people were last over near Crooksville/Roseville, Ohio under the surname Weatherby. I pray every day to be reunited with them and my tribe of origin. If anyone can help look for me on Facebook. I'm still searching for them and my tribe. Never give up on those who were taken from you. Sometimes that's all they have left in this world.

Don't know how versed in linguistics you are but Shawnee is an agluttinated language, with the primary verb tense being aortive. Nouns congugate as well as verbs. In other words shortened roots of words can be added before and after prepositions to make a complete idea. So those big words are actually small sentences. Ive noticed old translations of Shawnee and other closely related languages the English requires many more words
