Dave talks about the tomahawk and knife duo and its application to close quarters combat.
FYI: A really good quick read for tips on using the tomahawk can be found at:

I'm glad to see that this has been retained. When we came, we destroyed so much of the culture's and nations that lived here.

The Karambit is a great knife, best suited for slashing. Works quite well, to make an understatement. My personal preference is for a longer knife, that is not as curved as the Karambit, to make it easier to "hammer" and "backhammer" with the knife, as well as being more than good enough for slashing. A longer knife has more area to counter an opposing weapon in those scary as hell moments when you face one. But the Karambit is a great edged weapon, no doubt about that!

I can help vouch for that - Arma and the Scandinavian Historical Martial Arts Society have been examining techniques like that for a while (punching while holding a Rondel Dagger, A Scythe, etc), so there is international support for the biomechanics involved n.n

That's a Black Ronin tomahawk, by United Cutlery. They cost $12 to $35+ bucks, depending on where you buy it from. BUDK (online) has them for $12 right now (December 2009) It's one solid piece of 420 stainless steel, with a nylon cord wrapped handle. It would not hold up to battlefield use and abuse. But for home defense, like having one on your bedstand (with a knife, as hawks are best utilized with a knife) it is adequately and completely deadly.

Very interesting. As a fan of tomahawks and a practitioner of San Soo since the late 80s, it's fun to see two of my favorite things combined. Looks like I might have to break out my Vietnam tomahawk and Bowie knife and run some forms...

Reminds me of the Plains Cree Nations and Cree Nations martial arts called Okichitaw! We use the Gunstock Warclub/ball head or full moon warclub/knife/lance/spear and tomahawk as well as non armed combat! Pretty cool, are you teaching any of the young(First Nations)men who are traditional?

Fun stuff Dave. Hope you guys consider doing a basic knife defense vid and gun disarms. The kfss forum guys dissed a vid of Schlomo doing gun disarms, but no one had the cajones to post their own So I really don't know what the san soo concepts of it are and would love to understand it or at least get a glimpse liked the empty hand demo look forward to working with you soon The Ex Cook OF Earl

You gave the reason to almost never throw the hawk. "Better not miss tho." Not wise to give up your best weapon, assuming you don't have a better weapon, like a shotgun, handy. Dave was the cooler (lead bouncer at the Long Beach Yardhouse) for several years. I worked for him for 3 years. You did not want to give up your standing position in a melee, unless you had no choice. Similarly, you don't want to give up a bone crushing, flesh tearing, skull penetrating tool, unless necessary.

Saw an interesting vid from Krav Maga Portugal. Stick & Tomahawk. It was a promo so the combo wasn't explained but the movement was right. I always think of The Patriot when I see the tomahawk

Question, in a knife fight (when using 2 long blades) would it be wise to wlied 1 side blade forward (offence) & the other blade backwards (defensive) just curious (A habit of mine) thanks

No. More like holding a roll of quarters. Actually gives some support.

The moves at the very beginning are probably BEST executed if you have a tomahawk in one of your hands so that when you get into your enemy's personal space, like your chest vs his chest are at-least 2 inches away from each-other, Then you can take higher action and sever an artery or something..

love the demo, but I still favor my lakonia in close combat over a hawk and knife, but at the end of the day thats all that realy matters right? what your most comphy with and fight the best with? maby if I had training Id take the hawk but joe smoe thats just gona hack and slash, lakonia all the way, perficit size for fighting in small area, such as a doorway or hall

Throwing weapons is more often Hollywood, right? - The only historic reference I know for throwing axes were clans of Nordic Tribes who threw them in large numbers like archers.

San Soo. Jimmy Woo was considered sort of a thug in the traditional martial arts community back in the day. But none of those detractors would mess with him. If by "close quarters" you mean anything and everything that you can do to stay alive in hand to hand combat, then pretty much the answer is yes. Standing up or on the ground, straight or circular, hard or soft, strikes or joint locks, armed or unarmed etc., etc... but always with the intent needed to go home afterwards.

great video but Im still more comfortable with my lakonia shortsword, for close quarters combat 20iches length, 14 1/2 blade. As arrow dymanic as it gets light weight, just a awsome weapon for close combat, but thats whats best for me I think when it comes down to it what ever your the most comfortable with is the way to go. I do how ever love my coldsteel trail hawk but its around 4 times more heavy and 6 times slower then my lakonia, think ud youse my trailhawk on zombies n sword on humans :P

Just imagine you are in an elevator, and the other guy pulls out a tomahawk and knife. Good luck using the strategy of "disarming" your opponent. You need to incapacitate the opponent, and get to an emergency room in time to sew your ass up before you bleed to death. The strategy against blades is not to disarm but to seriously affect the brain housing unit (preferably) or at least to make the guy physically unable to continue his attack. (As in literally disarming the guy (tee hee.)

if the person could have a gun if so throwing the hawk if done properly should kill and if dealing with two opponents one covering while the other is on point stabbing the man on point with the knife in the neck and putting him in the way of the second shooters using a human sheield you could throw the body into the shooter and then strike him while his down or throwing it can work too if begins to draw throwing the tomahawk at his lower extremeties which have a lot of nerves can cause a temporary lapse that can allow you to close the distance if not the legs aim for the torso if the wound is in line of sight the brain will double pain signals the first signal that can be ignored the impact pain signal and second the line of sight signal that the body is injured throwing a tomahawk into someones thigh or chess has enough stopping power for you to get the drop on them. shinobi did this or ninja with throwing stars against targets with early firearms to close the distance the hit major nerve bundles with them or any area where pain will have a lasting effect on someones focus. then they close in and kill them
