The Shawnee People have a complex history of migration, removal, and sovereignty. The tribe has long struggled with forced removals and land loss. The tribe created the Shawnee Tribe Geographic History Map to document their history of migration. The map features documented Shawnee locations from over the last one thousand years. The map is built using a modern geographic information system (GIS). Over 150 places were identified from over 300 sources, including publications, archival records and maps. The data is presented in the form of a heat map which displays the location based on density. Additionally, the map guides viewers through a number of significant time periods in Shawnee history.
