I love the fact that you left the logs dirty. They will weather and have such a natural look. I hate it when people grind and sand their logs.

My friend needs her garbage disposal replaced... something that is well within my capabilities to do... BUT I'm no longer in my forties, fifties, sixties OR seventies. We decided it would be better to have a handyman do the work. I watch you Shawn and though I NEVER would have tackled the projects you have, I miss the days when I could swing a hammer, use a saw, or a chisel and wrench to imagine AND create something in and around a home. Thank you for sharing your efforts with us all. It reminds me what it was like to be young and engaged with life. Self reliance becomes a different thing when the body ages and simple tasks become more complicated. Glad you're enjoying your life. Hope you're able to continue on KZbin.

You, standing by your cabin outside wall, really gives you the perspective of how massive those logs are you used to build the cabin. Amazing you managed to assemble them all by yourself. You definitely planned that part very well. You will have a warm and cozy cabin during the winter months for sure. It is wonderful the weather is cooperating for you to finish up the trimming etc. I hope your family presents you with a brass plaque regarding "The house that Dad built!" Such a colossal achievement. It would be wonderful to have a marker stating a bit of the history of your build for years to come. Congratulations on the incredible construction of your woodland home. Can't wait to see the way you decorate the inside. :)

When you listed all the jobs you had planned before winter in a video a few weeks ago I thought you didn’t have enough time. Well you did it and with good weather for another 7-12 days you will probably have enough time to dig most of the holes for the outdoor kitchen. Way to go Shawn!

I'm 58 and my wife and I are VERY worried about our future, gas and food prices rising daily. We have had our savings dwindle with the cost of living into the stratosphere, we are finding it impossible to replace it. We can get by, but cant seem to get ahead. My condolences to anyone retiring in this crisis, 40years nonstop just for a crooked system to take all you worked for.......

Excellent advice if you have any money left in your paycheck to invest. Democrats have put in motion the highest inflation in over 40 years and continue to waste taxpayer money at an incredible rate that will cause all the high taxes we now pay will seem like buying a hamburg at McDonald's. Wait until we start getting the bill for the several million illegal immigrants we are supporting costing us hundreds of millions of dollars every week. How much money have we already given to Ukraine 160 BILLION DOLLARS with more to be sent. It goes on and on. You might not recognize the cost right now but as our infrastructure falls apart in front of our eyes along with many other issues we will be told raising taxes will be necessary to make repairs or rebuild. We are going to pay and pay dearly people will have to work to the day they die there will be no more retirement benefits for anyone. Remember what I'm saying it WILL happen.

You really need to do your research. Biden hasn’t been in the White House long enough to cause you such grief. He has been working on UNDOING the wrongs that the previous administration did. This country was not built on citizens supporting the rich by giving them lower taxation than the working man/woman. TRump made sure his rich friends got a tax break, not the working class. Use your head and find out the truth about what happened during the last administration. DO YOUR RESEARCH…DO NOT WATCH THE NEWS SORCES YOU/VE BEEN WATCHING!

Just last week due to alterations in fire codes in the Uk, I had a new outside door fitted and after the workmen had left, was outside cleaning up and noticed the surround had not been sealed. So out with the caulking gun and did it myself so when the painter arrived , lo and behold he said "Who did this? As it is not what we normally use caulking wise." and I told him I did it, as I hate unfinished work. So now the flat is sealed up good and tight and all that needs doing is for the joiner to return and build in the surrounding floorwork that still has not been finished as it should have been. So Shawn that reminded me of the half hour I took out of my busy day to seal the door surround and now its hardened I can sand it down and if need be touch up any pant work I have dislodged . Cheers the Noo from Scotland.

Shawn, my dad retired from a company that made architectural doors from "knot blocks" from lumber that was to be finger joined, and they glued these blocks to a one or two inch plywood core, which had a minimum of 3-4" thickness. Your hinges reminded me of these doors as they were quite heavy. These were sold mostly in north America, plus they made room dividers for offices that were aesthetic and practical as they partially blocked the views for privacy reasons, but these tended to be made of exotic woods as well.

Shawn, you re-hanging that front door reminds me of 1990 ish, when I built my house. I loved log cabins but was afraid of all the maintenance later in life, so I built my interior doors out of 2x6 tongue and grove boards that are flat on one side and v-grove on the other. I hung those by myself and it was pretty tough. I think there was 5? I’m glad and amazed to see you still be able to do that manual labor. My days of big projects are over but enjoy seeing you build this beautiful cabin does me good

It seems like the outer 6 x 8s in the basement are bearing the load of the log walls while the interior 6 x 8 is not. I wonder if the cabin floor bowing will become more pronounced as the outer 6 x 8s keep compressing. Settling is a vexing issue. Hard to think of all the possibilities. I guess it wouldn't be an authentic rustic cabin without an uneven floor. Beautiful home!

I like it. Just an FYI and probably already known, insulation isn't effective when compacted. The air within the material is important to its R value effectiveness. So it's not necessary to compact it. This will save time and material, though admittedly not possible when filling the gaps between the logs. At the windows and doors however...

Hey Shawn, just curious, but would it be helpful to smooth out the surface of the logs in order to apply a waterproofing finish!! Like some sort of weather proof clear coat. Based on the grid paper plan he showed awhile back, it will be huge. Almost as big as the cabin itself. My guess is that it will combine the old outdoor kitchen with the screened in porch from the first cabin to provide a fully screened in space. I get the impression the bugs are worse in the new location.

The weather here is extraordinary or almost biblical it has rained almost every day for over a month and the next 10 day forecast is the same. I need to finish off a roof and I can't get 3 days on the trot where it is dry, one day to dry out, one day to do the job and membrane it then one day to do the steel sheeting. Usually it is drier than it has been, we get about 2.5m/ year as I live in a catchment glen for the fastest flowing river in the UK, the Tay, so, we expect a lot of rain but not like this. Our night temperatures are dropping to near freezing, so, getting work done before the days get much shorter and the temperatures get constantly lower. We don't get as bad weather as you do as we have the Gulf Stream to protect us but being in the mountains, shadows us from the sun. Technically, I live much further north than you, 56°N but as I say the Gulf Stream keep us warmer, so far, we have not had any snow on the mountains which is highly unusual.

I always thought that egress doors should open outward. Interior doors open into the room. The "hump" problem would not have happened? Unless you plan on adding a screen door? Anyway, I've enjoyed every one of your beautiful videos and appreciate you taking the time to do this. I lived in a slab-sided cabin in the White Mountains of New Hampshire (White Mountain National Forest and Franconia Notch State Park) so I do very much appreciate your life choices.

Hey! I'm a guy from northern Sweden. I have worked as a carpenter for 50+ years. This is not meant as a criticism but just a question/question? I saw you had a problem with your door! As I wrote after another video of your build, I was wondering why you made the door so it went inward? After all the hard work for the square meters you have as living space, I would have made the door open outwards! You save floor space and your problem with the door had never arisen?.
@johnnyeswe

Thanks for all the wonderful content through the years! Just curious about why you've chosen to have the door open inwards rather than out? I've seen a few other builds where the doors were made to open outwards for safety with bears and to save space.
