It's hard to believe that Mickey Dolenz, the lead singer and pretend drummer on this, is the only surviving Monkee. These guys were the goofiest slapstick bunch of guys ever on TV. Outrageously silly. But us young teenaged boomers ate it up. They weren't only putting out number one records, they were the number one rated show on television. As Goofy as they were they always managed to squeeze in at least one song per episode. This is when they would intercut goofy on screen antics with serious clips of them singing and “playing” the music. And yes, they were kind of a supergroup. Scoring top 10 hits and rubbing elbows with the biggest names in Rock. Including the Beatles!! Jimi Hendrix actually opened for them in their earliest live shows. Suffice to say his style didn't quite go over so well with their young screaming teenaged girl fans and he was invariably cut. During the first season they neither wrote nor played instruments on any of their songs. All they did was sing and pretend to play the instruments. Later in an attempt to be taken more seriously, they all learned to play their own instruments and insisted on playing them on the show and producing their own music. This didn't go over so well with the brass at NBC and they were soon canceled after the second season. Check out “Last Train to Clarksville” next. Great tune!

Mike Nesmith had several records released, and had songs covered by other artists before the Monkees, Peter Tork was well known among the folk club circuit as a talented multi instrumentalist, Davey was in musical theater and had an album released before the monkees (in fact, he appeared on the Ed sullivan show that the Beatles debuted on) Mickey Dolenz, although he had never played drums, was a rhythm guitarist in a club band for a while before the tV show. So they were far from "Pretend Musicians." Don Kirshner, the shows musical director, called the shots on how the albums were made, what songs were used and who played on them. They were mostly only allowed to play on songs they wrote, until they managed to get rid of Kirshner.

@@jeffjohnson9911 I never called any of them “pretend musicians” those are your words. I'm well aware that they all had some musical background as a prerequisite for consideration for the roles in the first place. But they certainly were not the polished cohesive sounding band that produced these hit records from day one. That was mostly other people. Professional studio musicians. All they did was provide the vocals. And during the first season they did not play their own instruments, they pretended to play them. Dolenzs had to take lessons just to be able to mime playing the drums realistically. They may not have been pretend musicians, but they were [initially] a pretend band pretending to be able to play and produce the experienced professional sounding pop rock music none of them were capable of producing when they signed up for the show. I appreciate your fandom though. I was a fan too. But we can't change history or reality.

Peter Tork (bass when playing live) was an actual musician and played many instruments. Mickey Dolenze came in knowing a little guitar, but played the drums (was taught) and Mike on guitar was an aspiring folk singer before the show, his mother invented "white out" for typing, and his family became instantly rich. He tired of doing the live shows quickly after the family fortune.

this sunday (december 10) marks 2 years since michael nesmith passed away. i saw him and micky do the final show of their monkees farewell tour in los angeles, just a few short weeks earlier. micky continues to perform monkees songs in concert, and recently did an album called "dolenz sings nesmith" which is really good. the rock and roll hall of fame has yet to induct the monkees which is a shame, especially now that there is only one surviving member. at their peak they were as big as the beatles and the rolling stones on the pop charts. if i may be allowed a shameless (and helpful) plug, i have the E! true hollywood story episode of the monkees on my channel. it's everything you want to know about this great band that i have been a fan of since the tv show debuted in 1966.

I love the Monkees! This is one of their best. They have an interesting backstory---they were hired to play a band for the TV show and originally just supplied vocals to songs that were pre-recorded by other musicians and songwriters. As they went along, they "became" a real band when they were sent on tour, and for their third album, they played all their own instruments and wrote more of the songs. Check out the episode "Die Monkee Die"----it was one of the 1st episodes ever aired and it's a great way to dive in to the show's aesthetic. Other Monkees songs you might like: Steppin Stone, Pleasant Valley Sunday (my personal favorite---written by Carole King), Last Train to Clarksville, etc. And yes---Micky's voice is phenomenal!!

Shawn, one of the first (and BEST) things to learn about the Monkees is that there really is no such thing as "the Monkees sound". The reason for that is that the musical range of the Monkees was so amazingly eclectic. They did jangly pop, like I'm A Believer, but also a lot of early Country-Rock (influenced by songs written and sung by member Michael Nesmith), Vaudeville/Music Hall tunes (rooted in Davy Jones' musical theatre background), folk and novelty (Peter Tork), and rock/pop and psychedelia (Micky Dolenz). They also had a stable of some of the best songwriters of the day writing songs for their TV show and records, along with some great additional songs contributed by Nesmith, in particular. Theirs is a very deep, fascinating, and satisfying rabbit hole to go down!

Since both songs are pretty short, I just thought of a hilarious reaction that you might enjoy. Another one of their hits which actually was a bit more edgy, is called Stepping Stone. But then about a decade later, the Sex Pistols, at the forefront of punk music, did a cover of it and it quickly became a fan favorite and it really is intense. It's just so fun to hear them back to back. From the late sixties to the late 70s jump in time.

This was fun! I’m so glad you enjoyed it! I was almost five when it came out so it’s been part of the soundtrack of my life. I was so happy to hear you give props to Mickey Dolenz for his voice. Growing up I always liked their music but going back and listening to them as an adult (thanks to the internet) I have a greater appreciation for his voice itself and his singing style. I recommend two songs that further showcase his vocal prowess. One is lesser known but truly impressive. I only saw it once on an episode of their show but thankfully I was able to find it on KZbin a few years ago, even though I didn’t remember the name of it. It’s called “Goin’ Down” and all four band members contributed to writing it. You absolutely need to be able to read the lyrics when you watch it because they go by at lightning speed. I’m tempted to say you should read them in advance because it’s so hard to process them when he’s singing. The other suggestion is perfect for this season. It’s “Riu Chiu”, which is a traditional Spanish song. They sing it a cappella. You can find the video from the show where there’s a Christmas tree 🎄 behind them. Mickey is the only surviving member of The Monkees and he’s still performing at the age of 78. Their show was goofy and silly and just plain fun. You can get a feel for what it was like by watching the intro with their theme song. It brings back fond memories for people of my generation. 🥰

Neil Diamond started as a songwriter, then concluded that he could do a better job than some of the artists singing his stuff. So started performing. The Monkeys were selected for their acting skills and zany character's rather than their musicianship, that could be added later. They were conceived as an American answer to the Beatles popularity. I enjoyed their shows as a kid, but it was just frantic knockabout humour. Funfair stuff. Micky Dolenze had been a child actor. I watched him in Circus Boy. He was put on the drums. Davy Jones, the little Briton, was given some Marraccas to shake. Blonde Peter Tork could play piano, and bobble hatted Mike Nesmith played guitar. He was the strongest musician. Check out his solo Down to Rio. It's good. Wake up sleepy Jean was one of their biggest hits. That's worth a listen too.

Headquarters, their third album, was their first one where they took artistic control and were able to play their own instruments. Take a listen to "Shades of Grey" to get an idea of their actual talent. They really were good, but had horrible management .

If you haven't done "Daydream Believer" yet *with the original video* you have got to do that one! I also highly recommend "Daddy's Song" with the original video from their movie "Head" - an incredible dance number with Davy Jones. Other great ones are "Last Train to Clarksville," "i'm Not Your Stepping Stone," "The Cuddly Toy Song," "A Little Bit Me, A Little Bit You," etc.

For some more "Shrek" music check out Bonnie Tyler's "Holding Out For A Hero" followed by Jennifer Saunder's cover which was featured in "Shrek 2". Jennifer played the voice of the Fairy Godmother and she sings this song when she's trying to get Prince Charming and Fiona to kiss at the party (it plays over the scene where "handsome" Shrek and Donkey break into the castle to rescue Fiona.

The insanity of decades of critics [parrots] complaining they didn't play instruments on their first two albums and had help with the others when other singing groups and even bands used the wrecking crew studio musicians ALL of the time. and then there's the Smashing Pumpkins and Shrek Bull Shit...

Davy Jones was a very good singer. They had a few good songs. Their time recording was short but they were knda successful. Didnt care for their tv series too silly for me. The only remaining band member is Mike Nesmith very sad!
