Just wanted to say: I really like these videos. Ostensibly, the are about the gear, and I learn a lot by the way you use and talk about it. But what I really dig is your technique and some of the out-of-the box thinking your licks demonstrate. I have spent hours trying to wrap my fingers and my head around some of these strange chromatic riffs (like that one at about 48 seconds and the next one at 55 or so). While I can finally play it, I still can't explain why it works so well. Anyway, I really appreciate your work. Thank you.

Thanks very much. I'm not sure really what I'm doing when it comes to the outside stuff. Being pretty much self taught has kind of forced me to not be as concerned with the theory and more focused on whether or not I like how it sounds. Thanks again.

You can email me at stephen@pettyjohnelectronics.com and I can upgrade the chime gain pot to match the new chime, however, this does not add the boost feature to the pettydrive. Thanks! Stephen
@macbaker84778 жыл бұрын
Man the boost control and the drive control together are magical on the "Chime" pedal! I think I prefer the more open chimey overdriven tones that I'm hearing in the "Chime" pedal versus the "Iron" pedal! I think the "Iron" pedal might be more tweaked for bright amps! :-) What do you think Shawn? Mac
@ShawnTubbs8 жыл бұрын
The Chime is more open sounding to me but has less gain than the Iron. They're both really great pedals.

@ShawnTubbs6 жыл бұрын
Hey Austin, thanks so much for watching and for the kind words! I wish I could remember how I had the PJ Chime dialed. It sounds like I was using more boost than drive and the tilt was probably at around 10 O'clock.

Shawn! Killer demo as always! I have a brand new Blackface style amp based of a Princeton Reverb! It is from amp builder Rick Hayes of Vintage Sound Amps! I'm running 6L6's in it right now (It takes 6V6 or 6L6's)! I have listened to your demo and a few other of the new Pettyjohn Chime and Iron pedals! They both sound fantastic and I'm trying to decide between the two pedals! In your opinion which one of these two pedals would match up with my amp the best or do you think they would both be great choices! I'm looking for something to give me a great low-medium gain overdrive! I also heard the new Pettyjohn "Lift" boost pedal and I really like the possibility of going with the "Lift" and either the "Chime" or "Iron" pedal! My Vintage 20 1x12 combo has a lot of clean headroom on tap as Rick Hayes the builder uses a higher output transformer to give it more clean headroom than a standard Princeton Reverb! :-) Mac Baker
@etherealpro8 жыл бұрын
Hey Mac! The LIFT in front of either (or both) Iron and Chime is how I designed the who group of them to sound best! The IRON is close to a pushed Fender style amp with a bit smoother top and thicker low mids and the chime is sweeter and has a decent amount of gain especially with the Boost and the LIFT in front! Kinda depends on what your going for! I use all 3 every week! :) Cheers! Stephen
@macbaker84778 жыл бұрын
Stephen I was actually thinking how good the "LIFT" would sound pushing the IRON and CHIME! Thanks for your comments and replying to my post! I think I could really cover some tonal ground with the "LIFT,IRON and CHIME" running through my Vintage Sound Amps "Vintage 20" combo! This would be ground breaking for me to actually end up with 3 pedals from the same builder! :-) Mac
@etherealpro8 жыл бұрын
That sounds like it would sound crazy good to me! :)
@macbaker84778 жыл бұрын

shawn, not gonna mention your playing this time. a question? are you doing the editing of these videos? as they are a lot better than some photography channels on YT. and that goes for the audio as well. and yes, the higher the voltage, the higher the headroom, = no bad clipping artifacts. i had a custom made mixer at one time, with valley people, burr-brown circuits and Avalon Class A high voltage output drivers (36 volts). what a diff from the ordinary. cheers, mate. j.

how would you compare this to the version of the chime found in the petty drive v1? Im trying to decide if I want the petty drive v1 or v2 and cant find any does of the v2. All I know is some changes where made to both "channels" Wanna know if the 170$ pice difference is worth it.
@pettyjohnelectronics8 жыл бұрын
Shawn may be able to chime in on the differences he picked up. The core circuit is the same with increase gain. The power section and the grounding layout have been improved for greater headroom and lower noise so I personally play my V2 now over my V1 as I think it performs better. Wouldn't have put it out if it didn't feel better under my fingers and built better too! The PettyDrive V2 is the IRON and CHIME circuits in one box, so they sound the same as these single demos, just with the option of stacking them too. Plus you save $60 over buying them separately! ;) Stephen
@ShawnTubbs8 жыл бұрын
This chime sounds more open to me and certainly has more gain. The Petty V2 that Stephen mentioned below is certainly something to consider.
@Esbenmad7 жыл бұрын
I can see you have both Chime and Morning Glory. How do they compare?
@ShawnTubbs7 жыл бұрын
The Morning Glory is really open sounding but maybe not a versatile as the Chime. I use the MG as more of a dedicated low gain OD and the Chime more as an "always on" pedal.
@Esbenmad7 жыл бұрын
Shawn Tubbs Thanks for your answer, Shawn! I have had the Morning Glory and really liked it and am now considering buying the Pettydrive, so I just wanted to hear if I could get kind of the same openness from the Chime. Thank you again and have a great day 😊

On My Pettyjohn There seems to be no difference between low cut 'postion one' and low cut 'postion three' is this the same on yours or is mine not functioning correctly? Many Thanks
@ShawnTubbs8 жыл бұрын
There should be a difference but it is subtle. I would reach out to Pettyjohn to be sure.
@pettyjohnelectronics7 жыл бұрын
Hello Jon, Sorry to hear that. If you are on the middle clipping mode there wont be much change in the tone between those two, if you are on the up or down clipping position it should be a bit more noticeable. In general the pedal is designed to have the home base for each clipping setting the same position on the low cut setting. Hope that helps. If your pedal seems defective email me at stephen@pettyjohnelectronics.com and Ill make sure you get taken care of! Thanks! Stephen

What did you use to power the pedal in this video? I have mine hooked up to my voodoo lab pedal power plus 2 so its got 9V going in but when you flip the clip switch two of the other channels are wayyyyy quieter than one
@ShawnTubbs8 жыл бұрын
Hey Tyler hmmmmmmmm.....That would be a question for Stephen at Pettyjohn. I'll bet you a dollar he'll see this and get you an answer. I used a simple Visual Sound 1 spot. Do keep in mind that different types of clipping can be a bit softer or louder in volume but not drastic...
@tylermcelreath62668 жыл бұрын
Yeah the LED clipping seems to be the loudest while the germanium is the quietest or softer of the two i guess, would that make sense?
@ShawnTubbs8 жыл бұрын
Yes it would. You would certainly have to reach for the level control and gun it a bit in the other two clipping modes.
@pettyjohnelectronics8 жыл бұрын
I think I responded to a PM just a moment ago on this but for anyone else who is reading this: yes, there is a large difference between the outputs of the different clipping modes. This is by design and there is plenty of output on tap to make up for the volume. The thing is the LED clipper in the middle is designed for maximum headroom before clipping so it can be used as a clean boost or mostly clean preamp. The other two modes have germanium hard clipping involved for maximum harmonic drive at the expense of a lot of volume. Basically those germaniums take all that extra volume you hear in the LED mode and turn it into harmonics! :) A key with this pedal (and the iron too) is to us the low cut and clipping in tandom! They are designed so that each low cut setting attempts to compensate for extra low end taken from each parallel clipping mode. Hope that helps a little! ~Stephen
