It seems to me that a simpler trigger system would make this trap more practical. Rethreading new trigger strings every time would get old rather quickly. Still, it’s fascinating to see all these variations.

I didn't expect this to work at all! I figured that the mice would be able to push through the strings fairly easily. I guess you could fix that by tying the strings on something like a cheerio in the middle. That way you don't have to rely on them chewing through the string. They would just eat the cheerio, which would release the string tied to it.

I used to build these as a Rabbit Box was a kid in North Arkansas back in the 70's and have caught many rabbits as well a a skunk or two and possums to. The kind we made had trigger stick and hook end to the trap door.

I would think you could set it up so they dont actually have to chew through the string. They would just force their way between the string causing tension that makes the trigger mechanism go off.
@pilotandy_com

Seems like once you know the size of the loop, you could make a bunch to quickly switch out. Since you can just push them into the slots and you dont have to thread the strings. Very cool trap.

Might be interesting to design traps that use Cheerios as triggers. EG with 2 loops of thread through it. When the cheerio breaks, it triggers. Where did the mouse on top at the end come from? Did the released mouse come back? Or is it a pet mouse?

My problem is they crap alot and make so much nasty mess after they're caught. If you are going to be reusing live traps and handling them, do you just let all that nastyness build up? Or do you clean it once in a while. If it's the latter, this kind of trap seems horrible to clean so would it not make sense to implement some sort of " easy clean " design like a pull out tray?

I'm wondering if it would be more effective if the inner wall was a solid wall instead of bars, leaving a gap in it as you do the bar wall. That way it would be very clear to the mouse what it has to chew through to get the bait.
