History note: This song was for Brandy's Never Say Never album. She thought it needed to be a duet like Michael Jackson's The Girl is Mine featuring Paul McCartney. Monica was asked to be featured on the song. Clive Davis decided to put Brandy's song on Monica's album as her lead single and even named Monica's album The Boy is Mine instantly manufacturing "beef" between the two artists when the song is actually about Brandy's real life love triangle at the time between herself, Wanye of Boys 2 Men, and Adina Howard. I'm going to drop those suggestions for you. Brandy's first album was her debut at the age of fifteen. Where she is sitting pictured in a hat and boots. Her sound is very west coast, she is a native Pacific coaster like I am but she's from Los Angeles and the whole Los Angeles R&B movement (and Bay Area too with MC Hammer, Oaktown 357, Tony Toni Toné, etc), was very nice back in the nineties. All Californians! Another girl group I want you to look into is "Nuttin' Nyce" (three singers). Brandy was also friends with the former boy band Immature before they kicked out Texas native Quindon Tarver (he died last April at 38 in a car crash, at the time he was kicked out of Immature he was barely thirteen). Quindon was from Plano, Texas and Quindon toured with Monica and Brandy back in 1998 during The Boy Is Mine concert tour, the year after Marques Houston's mother passed away from cancer. But if you listen to all of Quindon's album tracks and his singles like those he worked on with the also deceased Static Major (Stephen, he died at 33 and prior to his passing worked with Aaliyah, the whole Playa male band, DeVante Swing and Da Bassment crew, they were good friends) all of Quindon's tracks are nice too. Back to Immature. Brandy actually messed up Jerome (the bleached blonde rapper of Immature who was in the band with that backstabber Marques Houston and Kelton Kessee). Marques Houston's stuff is nice, but he is not a good person. Don't rock with him, Jerome or Kelton, for how badly they treated Quindon when they were children. There is a track that Brandy Norwood did with Joe Thomas singing backup vocals, it's called "Angel In Disguise". You'll love it. Joe Thomas is a Southerner and his career didn't take off until he moved to New Jersey at the age of twenty. I will drop his earlier work for you before he released his "All That I Am" album and his other album "My Name Is Joe". Check out Joe Thomas's "Everything" album, that's his debut, his first album, he was twenty. "I'm in Luv" was his video single off of his "Everything" album (released Fall of 1993) and his first cross cultural collaboration with a 'Jamaican', foreign, overseas Black artist. As for Monica: she's definitely got the more Soulful voice, she SOUNDS "SOUTHERN". Her first album was released I think when she was THIRTEEN. Monica's breakthrough track was with the now retired rapper named Malik, called "Like This and Like That" on her "Miss Thang" album released back in 1995, she's got three children now. It sounds so SUPER URBAN. Please bear in mind that these artists are all the same lineage, heritage of Blacks, we are all connected to United States abolition which means we are "native Freedmen". Monica released other songs like "Angel Of Mine" (1998) and another hit track that should have gotten more airplay on the radios was "Just Another Girl" for the "Down To Earth" motion picture film soundtrack that comedian Chris Rock starred in back in 2001. It was released with a video, you'll like it. Monica Denise Arnold is from College Park, Georgia. She's definitely one of those "Georgia peaches" who I thought became too womanly before her time (dark makeup, long nails, etc). For the Space Jam motion picture film soundtrack Monica sang the hit song "For You I Will" back in 1996. Another song of Monica's I think you'll like is "The First Night", that was released back in 1998. You asked for years of release or certain tracks/cuts, so I gave them. Listen to Monica's "After The Storm" album released back in Summer of 2003. "Down 4 Whatever" is a smooth track, produced by Darkchild. The reason why more than one track released by both Brandy and Monica sounded similar production wise is because they worked extensively with Darkchild. Watching this video brings back memories, they were both inspiring to many non foreign, non biracial, Black American girls growing up who were often told we weren't light skinned enough, and other messes. Brandy and Monica, believe it or not their feud was REAL but they have since cooled it now that they are both in their earlier forties. Hope this helps.
