Taemin’s guilty shoes box is so smart. It is called archive version because it is supposed to be like one of those shoes boxes you keep random stuff in. I kinda have that too. A random box with random stuff like self-burnt cd, receipts, a lot of membership cards, etc😂 and this album even has a secret compartment. Maybe it is about memories with your ex? and all kinds of photos that you feel guilty looking at lol All in all this packaging is not only cool but it feels very personal

Love the insight that the kpop unboxing community gives at the end of the year. It's a good way to wrap up all the physical releases and shows the varying levels of creativity. I slowly grew to liking jewel cases for the storability aspect since they take up little space as long as the included booklets are done well, but ill always prefer the thick photobook packaging without the box

NCT Dojaejung Perfume Boxes was honestly my favorite packaging from SM ent this year. It's so creative and they look so sophisticated and pretty on the bookshelf.

I actually don't think BSS's and Taemin's albums are similar, like yes, they're shoe boxes but one is supposed to be an old memory box while the other is replicating a modern box of running shoes or smth and i think it's so so cool how two completely different concepts are supported by the shoe box

Really good video ! I love how creative SM is with some of their albums ! On the other hand, I do agree with you on JYP. I feel like they do only basic packaging for their artist. As a photographie lover, even their photoshoot are boring and overly simple. I wish that they did a little bit better for that as they have the money !

Yes it's true that JYP are a bit lazy when it comes to that. However, it seems like they're getting better judging by the upcoming nmixx album. The limited version looks amazing and even the others ones seem cool. Can't wait to see that ! And I do agree with you about the photoshoots, it's such a shame 😭

This is what i dont understand abt JYPE.. they can make really cute/creative albums but still choose to make albums with just the name and a plain background 😭 like itzys crazy in love albums are really creative and pretty but their recent album packagings are just… horrible and skz albums are usually really nice especially the limited vers (5-star omgg) but rock-star limited ver is so boring 😭

SHINee has the best album concepts hehe. Surprisingly Jinki's circle is one of my fav albums this year (tho the size is crazy) but the aesthetics are insane... it's too beautiful, and I will definitely display as a coffeebook!! ALSO CONGRATS JINKI'S CIRCLE FOR BEING PICKED AS NO.1 KPOP ALBUM 2023 BY BILLBOARD I miss him so so much. Thanks for your effort for filming so so many unboxing this year!! Happy 2024!!

I would recommend anyone who listens to their kpop cds frequently to get a cd case. You know the ones where you van keep a bunch in, mine holds 40. It just is a lot easier and their is less chances of the cds or albums getting damaged. I found mine brand new in a secondhand shop for 0,75 euros. They are pretty easy to find for cheap and their are a bunch of ones with cute designs since a lot of them are from the 2000’s.

I love the new era of shinee solos packaging where we explore so much different types of albums now, but I wish SM kept all the photobook as the standard spine though 😢 that’s the iconic thing about shinee solos 🥲❤

I'm definitely into boy groups more than girl groups so I hadn't seen the Red Velvet album. OMG! It is so flippin` cute! I agree that TXT album was not designed well. My favorites this year were Key's and Taemin's albums too! Happy New Year!

For me TXT had my favorite and also one of my least favorite Album designs this year, I’m a really big sucker for the fairytale/storybook aesthetic so I absolutely loved loved loved what they did for the name chapter temptation and the color pallete was so pretty too, but yeah I agree with pretty much everything you said about freefall, I don’t love that it doesn’t close, and it didn’t feel as sturdy to me as their albums usually feel, one of the only good things I can really say about it is that I’m assuming it’s eco friendly because it’s made out of cardboard but yeah, I really do like the art on it and the actual concept in theory but in practice it’s just not my favorite thing in the whole world

I wish SM would be consistent with their artists albums. NCT 127 hasn't had a creative art cover since Cherry Bomb era, and they also got lazy with Aespa designs after Savage Era. I noticed that for both NCT and aespa they almost always do a just picture of the members on the covers, and call it a day.

tbh i actually quite like the larger paperback albums, the magazine/picture book style is sooo satisfying to flip though. but i do agree on the like shelf display issue id probably frame/case an album like that just to have it up out of the way. i loved your picks by the way i wouldnt have noticed some of these albums if not for this vid and i have a few to check out after seeing this.

I agree with all of the favorites... But I'll add one to the list: Moonbin ans Sanha's Incense. I love the way it opens, how the photocards are stored inside, the photobook, the cd, the aesthetic. It's one of my favorite packagings of 2023

I agree with all of your choices, and SO HAPPY that Key's Good and Great album made it into this list! This album packaging is my favorite, so relatable and creative. I'm so surprised by the Taemin's Guilty Box version, just wow! I also don't like the big photobooks that SM has been releasing this year either, taking up too much space and hard for me to use them for scrapbooking. In addition to everything, I would like to add the Smini and Poster version to the list. Poster version is controversial to some people I guess 😅 But I love it.

I wholeheartedly believed you were going to mention the rockstar skz albums. they have the same floppiness AND the cd is just in there (at least the limited version). We're so easily pleased (just give a hardback cover), IDK why kpop companies don't understand

The box for Taemin's Guilty album reminds me of Layover by V cuz there's so many inclusions and its almost the same box, I enjoy the unique packaging and the amount of inclusions they can fit in there

I agree about the inclusions being free floating in Freefall but I ended up loving the whole concept behind that packaging. At first I was so stressed about the idea of having to rip an album but when I saw the strip that said "tear yourself away from what's holding you back" it actually kind of hit me. Like I have gotten so stressed about something that is supposed to be fun and it was a good reminder to just relax and enjoy it and not stress about damage. That being said it's the companies themselves that put out 500 versions and make you feel like you're missing out if you don't have it all so that reminder from them is a little ironic.

Guilty & Killer are my favs, have both of them On the other hand I work at a kpop store & we almost fainted when ITZY's Kill my doubt limited version came, we could see the damaged photocards even without opening the package... Such a mess.

I went to Walmart to buy Ateez new cd, everyone of them had the plastic ripped opened and I turned them in at the counter and the employee got a manger , the manager opened them fully and found no photo cards and no cd in them, someone opened them a little bit to steal the photo cards and the CD, the manager went over to the K-pop section and found photo cards and CDs hidden from the Ateez and NCT 127 and removed them and will now, have a camera stationed at the kpop section at that Walmart.

omg i knew you were gonna put exist after on my youth. i agree, exist is so fun to flip through because of that!! i don’t have on my youth but i have the piece of 9 and that is similar with the spineless feature and inclusions… i’ve been struggling keeping them in 😅 and yes the boyz phantasy packaging!! i love how they’re consistent with pt 2 as well, i hope they do it with pt 3 too

Thank you for this recap of 2023 packaging Katie ! :) I think the shape of the staples on the sf9 albums is made to put the album in a binder (not sure which size though). I don’t know why it would be useful for that album in particular but I know this kind of staples was used for some collectible magazines a while ago, so you can store and organize your magazines in order in a binder (I used to do that ah ah)

i think my least favorite packaging this year is nmixx’s expergo. when i opened my albums i was so sad to destroy them just to get to the contents inside. i’m also the type of person that buys a standard and the target. i wasn’t sure what to do with my extra albums since they’re kind torn up, so i couldn’t sell them. i ended up giving it to my friend but still. wasn’t happy with jyp for that one.

Hi Katie best wishes for the new year, we're almost there 💕 I am a person who likes box shaped albums so this year's favorite albums are Dual The Rose, From the Witness Ateez, Melting Point Zerobaseone, Who!Boynextdoor, Seventeen Heaven On the other hand I don't like paper digipacks, although I fully support the theme of more sustainable packaging, it is really inconvenient cause the CD often gets stuck and the package wears out very quickly :( The SM poster versions are very cool but not very practical, well the CD is only wrapped and you have to put it in a rigid case if you want to preserve it as best as possible

For packaging, I want it to be very original and cool or I just want it to fit well on my bookshelf. So I agree with your choices. I love vintage stylings like Key's "Bad Love", Fx "Pink Tape" or Shinee "1 of 1" but I also love how DPR Ian used color changing ink with heat in his "MITO" and "MIITO" albums.

3:26 I would recommend for Freefall is to have velcro on the top and bottom flaps and in the same spots on the back of the cover that way it can easily stay closed

SM really invests on creating one quirky packaging for each release. But for me personally I tend to buy the versions.that are photobook where I get the most photos. Lile for the Chill Kill version other than the bag version being expensive it also only had postcards while the standard photobook version has the gorgeous concept photos.

Seventeen‘s debut mini album annoyed me soooo much to open, that since i‘ve started storing the Cd‘s in folders where I write out the tracklists and I wilol soon have to get more pages for the folder, because a lot of the times, it is just easier for me.

10:05 I don't think we can blame JYP/JYPE (or other companies) on the PCs getting ruined in a packaging. That's the packaging/printing companies fault. These companies are not packing millions of albums in their offices lol. As for the design of an album, I believe most companies outsource a designer, the designer will probably send over the proofs and/or a sample of the contents of the album and It gets approved. This is my assumption based on what I learned during my MBA program. A LOT of companies will outsource most of these things bc it's a cheaper option rather than actually hiring an in-house team, factory/facility, printing machines, more employees to actually run the facility, etc.... Just my take 🤷🏾‍♀.
