I would argue that for most movie-lovers this one is in top 5 at least. It's as near perfect as a movie can be. Captivating story, incredible actors, good directing and just the right distribution of surprise and feel-good ending you want. Love it. It's mindbogling how many incredible stories originated from the brain of mr. King.

Couldn’t agree with you more! Forrest Gump I believe also has to be in many ppl’s List of 5 (hee hee- Hello Friends fans😉). What others would you think? The 6th Sense? Godfather2? Maybe not Top5 but w the recent loss of James Caan, I’m reminded of what a fantastic film Misery is!!!! Another Stephen King flick. Going wayyyyy back but Whatever Happened to Baby Jane is a great classic film, though I know that’s a stretch. But a personal fav. Great twist. Stay safe & love much💖

1) Red's mugshot photo is actually Morgan's son. 2) Red chastized Andy for having a "shitty pipe dream". Andy escaped through a "shitty pipe". 3) Andy hid his rock hammer in the Bible, in the book of "Exodus", which means "exit". 4) The poster of Marilyn Monroe is from the movie, "The Seven Year Itch".

"I guess it comes down to a simple choice, really. Get busy living, or get busy dying." Fun Fact: Raquel Welch, whose One Million Years B.C. (1966) poster plays a significant role in the film, is a big fan of this movie. Musical Enthusiast Fact: The opera song that Andy Dufresne plays over the loud speakers is "Canzonetta sull'aria" from "The Marriage of Figaro" by Mozart. It was Tim Robbins' idea for Andy to turn up the volume of the record player in the scene. Human Training Fact: When Andy goes to the library to begin work as Brooks' assistant and Brooks' crow, Jake, is squawking, Tim Robbins had to time his line so that the crow wouldn't squawk over him, since the bird could not be trained to squawk on cue. Robbins was able to time his line perfectly by learning the bird's squawking patterns, for which writer/director Frank Darabont praised him.

The reason why this movie is at or near the top of the greatest movie list of almost anyone is that it focuses on undying hope, proper justice, fulfilled dreams and love & friendship -- it resonates with what everyone seems to yearn for in this life. In this movie, these yearnings are fulfilled so the audience (us) feel "whole" after watching this.

By now you know that Morgan Freeman had one of the most recognizable voices ever. He has done numerous narrations on documentaries. And lent his voice to many other types of projects. He’s a Mississippi man, and a Hollywood legend. His movies are ALWAYS worth watching. “kiss the girls” with Ashley Judd is an awesome thriller type film. 😊

Marilyn's poster is from the promos for "Seven Year Itch". She was married to Joe DiMaggio at the time. He was her +1 at the premiere. She wore that dress, found a subway grate, and posed for the paparazzi. When Joe D. maxed out on sharing Marilyn, he asked her to stop and proceed with the night. Marilyn kept mugging for the cameras and Joe D. walked off. Fuzzy Britches is Raquel Welch from "10000 B.C." Rita Hayworth is just awesome. I forget what movie that hair flip is from. Fun fact: "He looks so young in that picture!" The photo of Red in his youth is a picture of Morgan Freeman's son, Alfonso. He also has a bit part as a prisoner in the yard, I believe during Andy's arrival scene. Alfonso has a much larger part in a movie with his father called The Bucket List. Morgan's voice is wonderful to listen to. I've been watching him since he was a member of The Electric Company, a Public Television Program, which premiered in 1971. The operatic song that Andy played over the loudspeaker was from The Marriage of Figaro. It was the Countess and her servant, Susanna singing “A new song of the air” in which they were referring to the first play, The Barber of Seville, when the Count used to get letters from the Countess (before they were married) on the back of sheet music she’d drop him from her balcony. Did a quick scan of the comments because I hate to repeat info but the poster with Marilyn Monroe is taken from a famous scene from the movie "The Seven Year Itch" from 1955. It's about a man whose wife is out of town, which gives him the time to get to know his neighbor (of course, played by Monroe)... with predictable results.

As usual, it was fun seeing you laugh at the funny parts. This movie is a great roller coaster of emotions and there are many "low points" as you called them. We go from hope to despair quite a few times throughout the story. For another Stephen King story with the same director, check out "The Green Mile" from 1999. And for another movie of the same director but more cheerful check out "The Majestic" from 2001.

well actually here is the deal. I read the book after watching this. So... What was really happening there is Andy had an ex-war buddy on the outside doing all his stock trades with the money leftover from his marriage. But he got cancer and died. All the paperwork is in that little box under the tree. So Andy had to go to that box to get all his stuff before putting the note and $$ in there for Red. In the book he never took any $ from the warden. It was just all his own money invested well for the last 20 years.

Unfortunately, I had a family member who happened to be in the newer prison next to the old Ohio Reformatory, where Shawshank was filmed. After a visit we took the tour. The front entrance area, which housed the warden’s residence is really quite impressive. The rooms used for the movie were left how they were in the film. A Bible with the cutout was sitting next to the safe in the warden’s office. The halfway house interior was also at the prison. The cells used for the movie were the nicer ones. I wish I could include some pictures of the other cells. The prison scene in Air Force One was also filmed there.

Actually, the movie was shot at the Ohio State Reformatory. The film was said to take place in Maine, a favorite location for Stephen King stories.

The Marilyn Monroe poster is from the seven year itch. Pretty good movie. I once saw a behind the scenes photo of the guy operating the fan, looking up and grinning.

One of the best movies of all time. Morgan and Tim were brilliant. The narration by Morgan is of highest quality as was the content. This and the Green Mile are simply the most entertaining and wondefully acted and directed movies.

This movie was shot on location at a prison in Mansfield Ohio. The prison itself has been closed for sometime nowl However, you can take tours of the prison and see the movie memorabilia and they say the prison is haunted. So you can also take the haunted tour.

@@AwesomeUSMovies the movie was set in Oregon but the short story was set in Maine . Another short story from the book was rita Hayworth and the shawshank redemption . The book only had 4 shorter stories and 3 were made into movies . The 3rd was Apt Pupil ( 1998 ) and it's pretty good too .

I've always ranked this as 2nd on my list of saddest movies, a far and away second behind the first movie, The Green Mile, because Shawshank has a happy ending. But it is a great great movie. I really love Morgan Freeman narrating and his speech about hope at the end. This movie was unfortunately up against Forrest Gump in the '95 Academy awards best picture nominees and even though there is no second place award in them, we all know this was a close second to Forrest Gump. Maybe any other year, and it may have won.

#1 Movie of all time according to IMDB's Top 100. I definitely recommend the Stephen King book to an Avid Reader such as yourself. It's called "Different Seasons", with four short stories representing the seasons. "Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption" represent spring. "The Body"(Stand By Me) represents fall, "Apt Pupil" also a movie(not as good as the other films but ok) for summer, and "The Breathing Method" representing winter.
