Another way you could explain the hollowed out Bible is it represents the warden's hollow usage of it, he reads the Bible but does not act upon what he has read

Exactly. I also look at Andy’s Bible as representing the warden himself. Holy on the outside, but hollow on the inside.

If you want to take the Jesus connection further, the warden never opens the bible, never sees the truth, and yet proclaims it as his source of righteousness. The warden is the high priest who struck Jesus for blasphemy, yet he himself only wears God's word as a cloth to hide his nakedness. He knows the Word and preaches the Word, but does not understand and is the ultimate hypocrite.

This maybe a little too on the nose and overkill but Jeremiah 23:29 say's "Is not my word like fire," declares the LORD, "and like a hammer that breaks a rock in pieces?" The rock hammer in the bible is a hammer with in a hammer. It is the physical manifestation of a spiritual tool.

Guy's, remember if Andy wasn't holding the book or then the Warden during the search it would have ended up being tossed onto the floor during the search, the first thing we see when the guard goes into the cell is him using his baton to knock all the books off the shelf onto the floor where the rock hammer would have probably popped out. It was a calculated risk but we already knew Andy was smart/clever.

The Christian parallels of this film are never ending. Andy’s wife cheated on him which could represent the adultry Israel committed against God. The Bible says that while in the tomb Jesus descended into hell. This could be the tunnel of sewage Andy crawled through. Red is the color of sin. Red says he’s the “Only guilty man in Shawshank” After Andy’s escape “Red”, who once despised hope, finally just admits his sin to the parole board not trying to justify his actions in any way. It’s because of Andy(Jesus) that Red now has hope and meets him again in paradise, wearing white no less. Because Andy lives Red also shall live. Love these vids.

Only if Red finds his way. But your skipping the revenge aspect, of the movie. Andy cons, and commits fraud, he becomes a criminal, to escape and lay his wraith upon the man who has held him. When one looks for symbolism, one can find many connections to religion, philosophy, or mythology.

"Adam's wife cheated on him"? No, while Eve may have eaten the fruit first, it was Adam who failed to prevent the serpent from entering the garden in the first place when it was his job "to till" and "to keep" it. (Btw, those words are later used when describing the duties of a priest in Jewish worship.) It's better to say that both Adam and Eve (i.e., humanity) cheated on God and that they would continue to do so unless God himself entered humanity to save it (i.e., Jesus Christ).

Excellent video. As you say, the Warden was master of the house for Andy, and Andy reversed this. The prison is also a prison within society at large. The master of THAT house comes for the Warden too. The authorities attempt to arrest him, and he at first appears to want a stand off (fully loads gun). He instead chose suicide over murder. An interesting choice for "a man of faith", as the Master of the whole house's judgement is for keeps.... Thank you

The story is bs without an ounce of evidence to demonstrate it to be true. If there was a God, he certainly wouldn't be the Christian god. God is so powerful he can create a universe so vast and large with enough stars and planets to outnumber all the grains of sand on all the beaches combined, yet he is so stupid he cannot find a better way to forgive man for breaking his absurd rules? What this really demonstrates is the foolishness and gullibility of humans.

Movies like this are always few and far between, and are more and more overlooked these days. The reason we think of older movies as better (as we often do with music) is that over time, only the good ones (or at least the memorable ones) stick around. The warden is like some people who think they know the Lord but in reality are actually blind and don't realize that they've never been born again. He sees himself as being up front about his "faith" with others and promotes the Lord and the Bible. He is also confident in his knowledge of the Word as seen when he asks Andy about favorite Bible verses. When Andy responds with, "Watch ye, therefore, for ye know not when the master of the house cometh.", the warden comes back right away with, "Mark 13:35. Always liked that one." The warden may believe is tasked with a calling. To do his job and to be an example of salvation to a population he refers to at one point in the movie as 'Sodomites.' He believes his methods are right and wholly justified even when brutality of varying degrees is used to keep (his) order. The warden, like many others who attend church, do good works, and even pray, etc. is blind to his blindness. He only thinks he can see. Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works? And then I will profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity. - Matthew 7:22-23. ...by their fruits ye shall know them. - Matthew 7:20. Peace.

One very interesting detail I’ve completely understand is that when Frank Morris and his “companions” escape from Alcatraz and that they leave behind the empty body points to the view of that when a soul has left the body, the body is nothing more but a shell of its former self.

Always was of a mind on every point here that Andy is positioned in the role of Jesus, Red that of Peter or Paul and the Warden the role of the Devil. That there is a connection there, though I'm not the most religious or strongest Christian especially as a child when I first saw this as a boy. I immediately caught on to these symbolic connections, only to become all the more convinced with age. Must confess was always amazed how few people caught the link here, or denied it (not trying to be snobby just always thought it obvious). This was a spectacular video.

That interpretation is fascinating to me, more so because my understanding of the hollowed out Bible used to be the same as Wisecrack's. Thanks for the video! But still one thing doesn't quite fit the "Andy-knew-the-Bible-very-well"-notion if you ask me: Shortly before the movie's twist, in a conversation with Red, Andy claims that whatever he's done wrong in life he has already paid for ("he" meaning Andy, not Red, just to clarify). And sure, I get it, his fate was horrific, he was falsely accused and thereby sentenced to serve many decades in prison - but from a biblical perspective, whatever wrongs he commited in life can never be paid for by himself, no matter how many decades he'd stay imprisoned, which is not to say that his two life sentences back to back were justified, I'm obviously talking about a bigger picture that goes beyond earthly life. So it's this particular statement (that all his mistakes were paid for by himself) he made that gave the whole plot and message a kind of "humanistic" flavour when I watched the movie. But maybe I misunderstood what he said, maybe he's not talking about a "bigger picture" (though that's how it sounded to me) but merely about the particular injustice of this situation, like if someone was falsely accused of having crashed a car and had to pay hundreds of thousands of dollars because of it, and then said something like "whatever stuff I have damaged in my life (like broken a plate or something), all of it I have now paid for", they'd be correct, without sounding self-righteous. Might be a bad example, I don't know, I'm just not sure if I really got Andy's statement about his own guilt.
@Sam_T2000
@Sam_T2000 Жыл бұрын
option one: Andy is saying he’s paid for the sins of mankind, as an allegory for Christ, through his suffering on Earth, for sins he did not commit… the prison representing our fallen world, not Hell. option two: you’re thinking too hard. it’s not a one-to-one allegory for the Gospel, Andy is just meant to be an inspirational, Christ-like figure. I do think the cell being empty, just like Jesus’ tomb, is the strongest evidence for this interpretation, though 🤷🏻‍♂️

Have you ever thought about doing audio commentaries during full movies? There is a number of ways you could do this. If you started a Patreon page you could literally include the entire movie itself in the video. Or, you could mark vocally in the video when to start (even on youtube) and allow people to watch the films on a blu ray or just another window with your commentary as the audio. I think it would be really cool to hear your insights for the duration of a film as it happens.

@@johnhardman3 To be fair, there was a time-cut there. Don't assume the expose of the prison was published the next day. Andy had his packet to the newspaper mailed from the bank as he was leaving. I'm sure it took at least one day to get to the newspaper. Then extra time for the reporters to get the story together. The film never says it was the next day.

Andrew is an anagram for Warden, Wander, & Warned. In Greek A = alpha w = omega Andrew created a phantom to go along with his escape plan. Just like Andrew the Apostle translated and created the Greek bible. Jesus is St. Andrew's alter ego. Andrew means "manly" yet does not mean man, but he is like a man. Andrew is the hidden truth, many will come in jesus name claiming they are jesus yet the truth is that jesus is the false messiah and all those who claim to come in his name are the antichrists. Jesus is a play on words from greek mythology Jupiter the king of planets is also called Zeus, so Jupiter + Zeus = Jesus... X Mark's the spot Andrew was the only one crucified on an X and the first to "meet jesus" he's also called Prōtoklētos meaning the first called to christ consciousness.... because I AM here and I know what I've written.
