I am so thankful to have found you, Shayda. I suffer from Chronic Pain from spinal damage. You have taken me off Social Media and its headaches and set my mind mind in a peaceful place. I never thought I could ever do art, but my life is nature. You have given me the confidence to finally put the brush on the paper and relax. You have my deep gratitude 💐

For nearly a decade now, I’ve only been sketching and using exclusively mechanical pencil on any paper I can find. Using other mediums had never worked out for me, with painting in particular with acrylics always giving me the most trouble. You’re comments on art becoming a need to complete a piece instead of enjoying the process is something I’ve struggled with that whole time. A friend bought some watercolors the other day for fun, and I decided to use them out of boredom, and immediately fell in love. That anxiety of creating something that looks ‘right’ instead of enjoying it came back, though, and reading articles on techniques made me question my abilities more and more. And then I watched your video and realized how far from the truth that could be. Thank you for putting out helpful intros to the mediums like this to get folks like myself going!

I'm only recently getting into learning watercolour properly, but my main way of creating pieces is to use wax pencils. The principle is similar to the wax crayon, but obviously there's more precision and a wider colour palette. Especially since I struggled to learn the patience to wait for layers to dry (big obstacle in watercolour painting lol) I would create all of my lines/shapes and shading in a spectrum of greys (usually the warm... fellow warm grey advocate here, hi there!) and then just use washes of colour, almost like a colouring book. A lot of the pigment does come off but it helps me throughout the process, as I feel some of the obstacles in watercolour are just accepting that the early stages of your painting are going to be a bit bleh, and you have to wait and have confidence, whereas with this you can see the goal a bit better.

Shayda, what is the difference between an artist and an illustrator ? How do you describe yourself? I love your videos especially this one! Thanks!
@ShaydaCampbell6 жыл бұрын
Good question! I think it's kind of a blurred line. I would say that all illustrators are artists, but not all artists are illustrators. Illustrators are sort of designers in a way. They use their own unique voice to draw/paint the world and reflect it back to us. Anna Rifle Bond is probably one of the best known illustrators of our time. Her work for her company Rifle Paper Co is so iconic. She paints flowers, women, cities, all common forms that we are familiar with, and yet her work carries a certain retro warmth that I think a lot of people identify with. Art can be anything from a signed urinal to the cover illustration for the New Yorker, but when I think of an illustrator's work, I think of a piece that redesigns common forms. Illustrations can be provocative, but they certainly don't have to be. I would open this question up to everyone! What do you think? Art vs. illustration? What's the difference ?

I started out drawing years ago. I wish I would have started when I was real little but I've always loved art when I was little. But since we were so poor I was never never able to get any art supplies as a child. But I loved art. I am 41 years old right now and probably 10 years ago I started drawing again. And then I moved onto acrylic painting. Made a few canvases posted them on Facebook then I got request for people wanting me to do them a canvas and I got paid for it also people bought the ones I painted. It turned out to be too much I did sell some and do some request and I just quit. And then I realize there was watercolor paper and acrylic paper I went a little nuts yesterday at Michaels and got a whole bunch of stuff. I love the watercolor paper for even drawing so I bought four different kinds of watercolor paper for drawing for a diary basically in the Diary of painting my watercolor on my watercolor. I subscribe to you because you really helped me figure out how to watercolor basically. And u made it easy to learn and informative. Thanks so much!!!
